The significance of this section should not be taken lightly. Of the 120 minutes, 8 minutes of Lettrist poetry are presented in a unique structural form: the 3 poems in this section are presented with abstract images produced by direct contact with the “raw film stock”.
Previously, image after dissociative image is juxtaposed with a sound track intended to be a polemic for a ‘new cinema’ (surrounding a surreal tale of two love affairs, concluded in a humiliating, misogynist, juvenile attack) – interspersed with the occasional inverted image or stock footage sequence – until we encounter the 3 poems as independent works within the film.
Unlike the structural organization of the film, these 3 works are uniquely presented with abstract images – painted, scratched kinetic lines and geometric shapes on black – and, to emphasize their differentiated identity as works of Lettrist poetry, not Cinema, Isou separated these from the rest of the film by inserting images of Daniel (played by Isou himself) between the poems.
These poems – filmpoems or, as we describe the genre today, videopoems – represent an important moment in the history of visual poems, when it was discovered that abstract images provided the ideal visual element blending sound-poems and images into a new form
