I'm from CA. The way I see it, "valley girls" use "like" and "whatever" in an exaggerated way, talk like they are always asking questions, and are more nasal. The accent is all over CA though. The wiki has some good info.

I live in Atlanta and everyone around here calls it Coke but they don't mean Coke as in Coca Cola but like Sprite or Dr Pepper or whatever.. people have to tell someone what they want after Coke but I just call it soft drinks hah
