Just recently a small handful of students graduated high school who were born during the blizzard... wonder what the stories were about their mothers getting to the hospital?
My mom sent me and my brother to the store in the middle of the blizzard of '93 lol. What should have been a 20 minute walk roundtrip turned out to be like 2 hours. She doesn't ever remember making us go to this day.
I was stuck at my friends house for a couple days suring this blizzard. I remember the one we had in 1996 was sort of worse because of the flooding afterwords.
I was skiing up at Seven Springs on the night of friday march 12 1993 with my high school ski club, and thoughty, "like wouldnt it be awesome to have a blixzzard hit the pittsburgh area, fortunately it did, but unfortunately we dont get those big SNOWES LIKE THE northeast gets a guy can dream
I was in St. Margarets Hospital having hip surgery during that storm. My cousin & her boyfriend drove my Mom from Zelienople to Aspinwall in all that snow. The nurses couldn't change shifts because no one could get in to relieve them, It was NUTS!
I was on my way from MI to FL during this and ended up getting stuck in Nashville TN for 2 days until we could get through. It was crazy. It was also on my birthday too....
I remember all my neighborhood friends took turns sleeping at each other's houses just knowing school would be cancelled the next day! What a fun time!
That was a horrible winter. The Blizzard in March was just the icing on the cake. I was 14 years old, and I can remember not seeing the grass for 2 months straight
Actually that winter (at least in central PA) was a kinda cold winter, but without much snow to amount to anything until this monster hit. You may be thinking of the 1993-1994 winter. There was an equally potent (but not as widespread) blizzard that hit in March of 94, as well.
I was four when this storm occurred. I remember living on a big hill in suburban Philly (Havertown for the locals to be exact (where I still live today)) and seeing the power lines covered in ice, my mom and brother unable to climb back up our backyard (which was two levels), having to get my dad to help them, a mail truck fail to get up the hill, and a bunch of other stuff that I won't even get into. School was closed for two weeks. I will never forget it. 15 years later at 19 I remember that.
I hate living in pittsburgh in the wintertime, why cant we get a blizzard here again kind of like a blizzard that Buffalo had in 1977 or the northeast had in 1978!!! I HATE LIVING HERE IN THE WINTERTIME!!!
dude.. we are one of the snowiest cities in the country ..excluding some extremes such as mountaintops and possibly L.A.S areas.. a feew bad winters doesn't mean much.. dont get sucked into the global warming propaganda. the earth goes through different patterns just wait and see.. this winter could be a good one
sigh....i was 18, and just left for the air force in september, so i missed all of the snow...but sure does bring back memories of the old crew at wpxi
I think you cut out the best part - I remember seeing Jennifer Antkowiak live at the airport for the first time and thinking she was the prettiest girl ever! you Can see her for a split second at the end of this clip - she was reporting from the airport during this storm.
Yea, I know I cut out Jennifer at the end. What happened was my dad had originally taped Jennifer's bit during the storm, then he rewound the tape (by accident, I presume) and taped a home movie of me over it.)
Thanks for posting this video. A reminder of my teenage years! I also now remember Pete Yaksick and am thankful that WPXI didn't keep him. And for whomever mentioned Jen Antkowiak - yes, that was she at the end of the video.
Yup, you would be correct. Unfortunately, at the time of taping, my dad taped over that segment, so it's not on the video. But I still have some more segments from national broadcasts that I'm going to try and get up in the next few days.
Thanks. By the way, I apologize for the video skipping. My TV card occasionally will do this while recording and I can't avoid it. But it's still good quality, if you ask me.
What ever became of Margaret Shortridge?

I watched this live when I was 12 years old, lived in Uniontown and it was the beginning of what turned out to be a 12 day weekend.

I was managing Carriage Park Apartments at that time. We had 6-8' drifts- I had to shovel out car after car that week. It was amazing to witness.

Also, I wonder what Pete Yaksick is up to these days. He worked at WSEE in Erie in the early 2000s. Nice reporting on here.
