  • For some reason I could only think of "mustache" for every clue.

  • nobody move

  • Man, I love it at 1:08. Shelley jumps up and down while the John Oates lookalike stands there in shock for a few seconds, not realizing he seriously won that $100,000. It's just priceless!

  • I NEVER understood why the audience clapped each time they guessed one of the doors correctly -- destracting to the players as well as it could cover up the first clue for the next door.

  • I love the guy's mustache! LMAO!

  • The goofy judge needs to lay off the bell... DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING Okay we get it- he won.

  • This guy looks like John Oates!

  • Isn't "curved" considered a synonym for "warped"?

  • Are you sure the contestant wasn't a celebrity too? Looks like John Oates to me. LOL

  • thought for SURE he wouldn't get the "Warped" one

  • Wasn't "curved" a synonym for "warped" and therefore illegal?

  • @ProfMike789 They aren't synonyms. A curved hockey stick blade, for instance, isn't warped, since it was manufactured that way.

  • He was completely credulous

  • 1:07 cool as hell! love it. shelley smith had real, genuine enthusiasm and was thrilled she did it and won him that dough. cool.

  • mullet stampede , pmsl

  • YOU SPEAK, YOU DIE. Okay, go...!

  • NOBODY MOVE!! LOL---- yikes...

  • Dick Clark will always be THE host for the "Pyramid" shows. When somebody like him has gone as long as he did hosting that show, nobody else can live up to those expectations. Drew Carey may be doing good right now on TPIR but don't be surprised to find out sooner or later that show is on its last years.

  • This is fantastic.........remember staying home from school and watching these when I was a kid, and in the summer when we were off......and here it is in full glory, THANK YOU so much, can only have imagined the electricity in the room that day, and all of the shows when they won top money like that.....btw, no one be a better host of this show than Dick Clark....he is the best.

  • This was thrilling to watch, as someone else said here, but it was even more thrilling back when it first aired because this final lasted TWO WEEKS before someone could win the $100K. It was incredible stuff.

  • You know... it's people like you is why I stopped taking comments on a couple of my other clips... if you have something bad to say or JUDGE someone, then keep your fucking trap shut... otherwise, watch the damn video and enjoy.

  • That was thrilling to watch! Very exciting! I was on the edge of my seat! Mr. Clark is Mr. Pyramid, no one else.

  • You mean Mr. Osmond isn't great?

LOL. $25K & $100K Pyramid aren't SHIT without the DC presiding.

  • @ThirdOfJune4444 why doesnt Dick Clark do the pyramid anymore he is so good at it

  • @jamsid33 He wanted a salary of $50,000 per show; the network turned him down. So, he left.

  • What a way to start off The $100,000 Pyramid Tournament.

Shelley Smith is an excellent cluegiver

and as for Dick Clark telling the audience to be quiet, well that was his job, to make sure that no one hollars out answers b/c it would cost the contestants alot of money, hey, you hear Bill Cullen, Bill Rafferty, Pat Sajak, Wink Martindale, Chuck Woolery, Gene Rayburn, Ross Schafer and Brooke Burns say the same thing, Dick Clark is Da Man and I agree, John Davidson can't hold a candle to DC.

  • Dick Clark was and always WILL be "Pyramid" as far as I'm concerned. The only emcee that came close was Bill Cullen, and sadly, I never watched much of his version of the show. It sure is sad that Dick can no longer host game shows again - he was one of the best!

  • Well Dick Clark may not be hosting Game Shows anymore, but he's still working off camera as a producer sometimes and also, his longtime friend Ed McMahon may be up in age, too, but he's still doing commercials and as for Casey Kasem, he is still going strong on TV and Radio and so is William Shatner and Robert Vaughn from Man From U.N.C.L.E. is also going strong as well and so is Wink Martindale.

Clark, Ed, Casey, Shatner and Robert Vaughn and the Winker

TRUE TV Legends and that's a fact.

  • Mr. McMahon died a month or two ago. He'll always be remembered for two things: Dick Clark's sidekick on "Tv Bloopers and Practical Jokes," and "Heeeeerrrrreeee's JOHNNY!"

  • @StukInBuf Let's not forget that he was Jerry Lewis' sidekick on the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Labor Day Telethon for a number of years.

  • I'm always surprised that the person giving out the clues can nod their heads to the person trying to answer. I would think that would be a form of cheating.

  • Nodding only symbolizes that the person on the other end is on the right track toward an answer. Nothing wrong with that. The restriction is giving the answer or the essence of the key word. The only thing borderline I find is when Ms. Smith uses "curved wet wood" for warped .

  • Dick's kind of mean. NOBODY MOVE. :)

    You gotta love this show.

  • I think the reason why that this was the first tournament and Dick probably didn't know how the audience would be.

  • He was generally this way during tournament weeks on the $100G version. Not as strict as he is here, but cautious, not only because he didn't want the audience to disrupt a big-money attempt but to also allow the players in the Winner's Circle to get into a zone. And admittedly, to build up the tension.

  • $100,000 was a lot of money back then. Still is today, but it's value has been dropped since the million-dollar game shows came around in the late 90's.

It was serious and huge situation for the contestant. These types of situations still are huge and serious. We're talking life-changing for the potential winner. You still hear this asking for the audience to be quiet during the final spin and bonus rounds on Wheel of Fortune to this day.

  • @SibGirl01 He took this shit seriously. But I know what you mean!

  • Would "a sense of humor" been buzzed down as descriptive or allowed as part of a list?

  • I believe it would have been acceptable.

  • I wouldn't buzz it if I heard it.

  • @Singingboy1978

    A demented person's mind.

  • @2themoon Actually, I think it would've been buzzed because of the prepositional phrase rule (you can't use them in the bonus round).

  • Did those contesters know each other?

  • with that blonde hair on one side and moustache on the other, I thought that was Hall and Oates

  • LOL!!

  • That is classic right there, with the people running out and congratulating him.

  • To add, not only do I think curved is a synonym, but I think "curved wet wood" would have fit under the too discriptive rule. I'm not saying this to be mean, but IMO it would only be fair to the other contestants competing.

  • Old (or heated) records.

  • Actually police agencies are enfored. The FBI is enforced by the Justice Department to make sure they're in line. State police agencies are enforced by their respective state, but I would have buzzed them for curved wet wood.

  • Man, Ms. Cluegiver should have gotten buzzed TWICED, once for her "Crazy Mind" which would be a synonym of "Warped" in that instance, and then for "Curly Wood", another synonym for "Warped". In later eps, the judges were very strict about this, in this one they were asleep :p

  • A third time could be "police agencies" and Things that are enforced. Agencies are not enforced, they enforce the law. Different definition.

  • I bet every one of those people who jumped on stage hit him up for money afterward, LOL!

  • At the time, Shelley Smith was a co-star of ABC's short-lived sitcom, "THE ASSOCIATES" (1979-'80).

  • Congrats to John Oates (Hall & Oates) on his big win.

  • lol.

  • That guy was not John Oates; his name is Richard Mahaffey. Please don't confuse him with John Oates.

  • Oh, lighten up, for crying out loud....

  • I told you the truth! I'm right. If John Oates were on this show, he would have been a celebrity player helping a contestant--NOT a contestant winning in the winner's circle!!! Please stop this mistaken identity for once.

  • Do you not understand joking around or sarcasm?

  • Of course I do, but I feel that the joke is getting a little bit out of hand. Let's put the joke to rest, and disregard anyone who tries to continue it (about mistaking Richard Mahaffey for John Oates).

    -Matt

  • Who's the celebrity with the long blonde hair?

  • That is Shelley Smith

  • Who's the celebrity?

  • Who's the celebrity with the long blonde hair??? I said.

  • That question was already answered. The celebrity is Shelley Smith.

  • Dick Clark sounds so angry.

  • Body language could give away a clue. That why the "nobody move!" outburst.

  • THAT IS A LOT OF MONEY BACK THEN!!!

  • $119,450 was his grand total. Awesome!

  • This guys reaction is the best of them all...he is truly amazed...AWESOME!!!

  • If I suddenly came into $100,000, I would grab Dick Clark and pick him up like they did Bob Barker on TPIR! :D

  • A family also picked up Richard Dawson on "Family Feud" one time.

  • John Davidson can't hold a candle to Dick Clark.

  • 100% right!

  • Damn skippy!

  • looks like Kim Carnes and John Oats

  • hey it was the 80s

  • i looooooooooooove this

  • I guess they wanted the tourney over this was the 19th try at the $100,000 before he hit it.

  • I admit, after 19 times, they probably wanted someone to win...

  • *BUZZ* Curved and warped are synonyms. He shouldn't have won.

  • Aw cmon, be happy for him!

  • Boo! Curved is not a synonym. Carved is a synonym.

  • Microsoft word does not consider "curved" and "warped" to be synonyms. I checked the thesaurus.

  • And after he wins, half the audience comes up to congratulate him.

  • I would have thought "curved wet wood" would have disqualified them. They were lucky! "Pass it!" usually means they're not going to win.

  • man its so nice 2 see someone WIN wath a TRIP

  • warped was good, VERY tricky, nice win

  • what an ass dick sounds like when he said to that one guy "excuse me you're in our shot!" (NO ONE cares)

  • The guy on the far left didn't know he was in the camera. Dick was not being a jerk; he was just letting him know where he was standing, so that the camera could get a shot of Richard's family.

  • Love the wiggling trilons! :D

  • that's called "Box dancing", my friend.

  • :) lol nice.

  • wow, WARPED that seemed tricky.

  • @nextbarker Naw well nowadays. The best clue would be a Level-skipping Mario.

  • lordy what is that a toupe?! geez....at least he won the money!!! :)

  • What is on this guy's head? It just growled at me!

  • Do you have any John Davidson wins? Fraziergorge had them but they were removed.

  • It's awful nice to see John Oates win the big money. This is one time that pesky Daryl Hall won't upstage him!!!!

  • Please don't confuse John Oates with this guy who won the $100,000!

  • yy, do you have an epiosde of Richard on Press Your Luck in 1984?

  • Why does the audience leave their seats after the $100,000 is won?

  • I honestly think it was encouraged by the producers of the show, just to get ratings? Just my opinion.

  • things that are warped was a tough 1.

  • Hello,

I have read that the reason why the entire audience rushes out of their seats is that they wanted "camera time", or that they just wanted to congratulate the contestant in case his or her relatives could not make it in person. Whatever the reason, it never bothered me any; I just thought it was to make such a win more exciting than a $10,000 or $25,000 win.

  • I dunno. Cheaper than confetti I guess :).

  • They used that San Francisco category in the 4th win posted here too, in the $100 spot

  • I have seen almost of the big wins and this is and always will be my favorite, thank you so much for sharing, his wife and son say it all with the smile on their face and also when he stands and hugs the star of the show.

  • Timing and scoring says 57"745 (02"255 remaining)

  • Is that based on when Dick Clark says "Go"?

  • You always remember the FIRST! Also, I believe the Winning bells sounded longer for this win then any, listen carefully and you may know what I mean! In addition, the graphic never stopped flashing!

  • I also remember Richard Mahaffey being one of the first two contestants when "The $100,000 Pyramid" debuted in syndication in Sept. of 1985.

  • For that last one that was a repeat, i wanted to talk 2 pikrahn202

  • I thought she had said "Earths wet wood" but I can be wrong; I just found this site yesterday (8/21/06) because I was looking for old pyramid clips. I use to watch reruns of pyramid alot. Shelly also helped a contestent win the 5th tournament after winning $5000 in a 21-21 tie. If I was in the tournament I would want her to be in the winners circle with me

  • The name of the 5th contestant was Denise Bumbliss. Im actually, going to try to find a way to post a profile on the site. I also have an old episode on tape of the 11th $100000 win from Tracy Trench. I would like to see this show come back. I personally did not like the Donny Osmond version, and if it does come back, it will have to be close to the original way. Same concept to qualify for the tournament.

  • Or, I'd love to see those 2 wins, I wish I had a videoclip of Denise and Tracy's win, I wish, I could see it on realplayer 1st.

  • Or, I'd love to see those 2 wins, I wish I had a videoclip of Denise and Tracy's win, I wish, I could see it on realplayer 1st.

  • Nice to see John Oates win that $100 K. Suck it, Hall!

  • That was not John Oates. His name was Richard Mahaffey; but he did look almost identical to John Oates, though.

  • Private eyes (CLAP), they're watching you (CLAP, CLAP), they see your every move...

  • Very good! Here's one for you:

    Old men

    Young Men

    Preachers saying Amen

    Taking a collection

    Playing on a bass drum

How come the city never sleeps at night??

A Nancy Sinatra song from 1966, titled The City Never Sleeps at Night.

  • An amazing video. I, too, was wondering at first how "curved, wet wood" could have been a valid clue for the "Things That Are Warped" subject. I looked in the dictionary and "curved" doesn't seem to be a synonym for "warped" or vice versa. He won the $100,000 anyway. Congrats to the guy!

  • Richard was a contestant on Press Your Luck in 1984 he won $4,050 so he won $123,500 all together.

  • He was on the episode where Ann whammied on one spin and threw a fit. She was on the old '84 intros.

$100,000 seems a lot harder to win nowadays no thanks to shows like Deal or No Deal, though. It seemed like in the '80s, the $100K was always up for grabs on Pyramid. Darn good times. :0)

  • If I'm not mistaken, Richard's PYL win was the very first PYL episode that aired on Game Show Network when they first acquired the rights 5 years ago.

It's also interesting to note that Richard's wife (who can be seen toward the end of the clip) won $25,000 on "The New $25,000 Pyramid" a few years earlier. Richard and son Brian can be seen coming on stage to celebrate that win. So the entire Mahaffey family has won almost $150,000.

  • I love Dick Clark's comment at the beginning. It sounds like he's got a gun and is robbing the set of the $100,000 Pyramid.

  • just wondering how could "Curved, Wet, Wood" have been a legal clue?

  • Because she had used these clues previously.

  • On what grounds do you claim it is illegal?

Microsoft word does not consider "curved" and "warped" to be synonyms. I checked the thesaurus.

  • Well I doubt the judges had Word for DOS as their reference. However, Microsoft's MSN Encarta lists warped as a synonym of curved. I'm glad the guy won, but I still think there should have been a BUZZ!

  • I thought the same exact thing. I guess once they give it they'd look like creeps taking it back....
