  • is hdtv on itunes better than avi files i know there samller file size but is the quilty as good and is there any problems with screen size on some devices not being 16.9

  • could you pls tell me does this gadget has an option for automatically video replay ? I need somthing wich will play the same video file from morning to evening - without pressing PLAY again and again .

    Thanks a lot

  • it dose not support regular WMV but it dose support WMV9 witch they are different .

  • even plays iso, no batteries, it's just adapter powered, Live version has ethernet and links with media on pc or network. unburdens my pc in terms of hard drive space, no more discs to buy or burn. No more time spent transcoding either. pays for itself in a year just in disc savings.

  • @JuuuuustAJ, This handles more formats, Frees up the p.c for more important tasks. Plays and displays better than a pc, which is constantly struggling to transcode or update codecs, or simply refusing to play at all.

  • Can you post a video of how the menu looks in List View mode ?

Is it like the Comcast On Demand Menu ?

  • i saw this product at Best Buy it's now $74.99 dont get confused with the WD TV Live which is $150.00 and is able to connect to networks and Youtube.

  • do you need to have the files on your external hard drive? or you can connect direct to your pc?

  • 3LD3VIL: You can stream from your PC i think you would have to connect the WD TV to your computer through Ethernet connection or connect a wireless usb adapter to it. but other than that i think you would need a External Hard Drive

  • then why not just directly connect your PC to your TV...

  • i saw on amazon, com that this thing can play VOB files. Can i have like DVD folders and play them in the WD TV and change subtititles or audio and stuff? like we do it on the PC using windows media player or any other PC DVD player?

  • hey, u didnt show where he caught the bean bag! lol

  • My controller is kinda' busted. doesn't respond anymore : (

Good thing i have my Logitech harmony one. good for backup.

  • no battery?

  • I have a question...

i just updated my WBTV and i Have a ASS File (subtitle) and it was suppose to be played with this one Japanese movie that im trying to watch, lol.

so i would press Option and click subtitle but it doesnt show it says "NO SUBTITLE" so i went back to my computer and tried it and it worked but when i try to do it in the WD TV HD it says "No Subtitle" How do i fix that?

and its weird cause when i updated it its suppose to support ASS FILE.

  • are they in same name?

  • I use this on my toshiba 42x3030d

With my WD 1 TB basics HD.

Have been downloading quite a few movies in 720p and 1080P since i ve got these.

The 720p ones seem to be around 4gb to 8gb and the 1080p ones around 10gb.

  • @ expiredjellyhoe

Not every format works through the 360 + you have to be online to watch external movie files!

  • you can do that through an xbox 360...

  • how?

  • Any video on a usb mass storage device can be played through an xbox 360 on your television

  • the xbox is too loud for movies.

  • And this also heats up your room and cocks you.

  • No, some codecs do not work (mpeg 1/2, mkv larger than 4gb, mp4). Besides, the xbox is too loud and needs way more energy.

  • does this plays vob files of dvd's too?

  • bro, you need a bigger TV, a full HD

  • can it be connected to a dvd player?

  • why the hell would u wana do that.

the whol point of this product is to play files not dvds. this is the future body

all the media will be merly files discs of any kind bluray or music wont exist in 5 years it will all be files so again i ask u why the hell would u want to hook it up to a dvd. If ur thinking of recording tv showse from that thing to ur external hardrive then i dont think its posible.

  • all i wanted to know is if i can connect the dvd player to this device coz if accidentally my computer doesn't work i can play my existing dvd's with no problem,it was my mistake my question wasn't phrased correctly

  • you need to start encoding your dvds to a hard drive, since dvd+/-r discs in our days cost more than hdd space ;)

How do you figure? I've bought DVD-R's for 20 cents each recently. This is about 5 cents per gigabyte? When was the last time you bought a 2 TB hard drive for 100 bucks?

Also, if you've ever had a 500 GB hard drive full of DVD iso's die on you, you know why someone would want to be able to play content from a BD or DVD.

  • 1st of all - which brand and technology? 2nd - how long do u think they will last? 3rd - can u rewrite your content superfast? 4th - how about access time for fast forwarding? etc etc etc etc. I bought 1TB Hitachi drive for $100. If we talking about (possible) HD content - you should compare prices to DL DVDs. THAT'S how i figured. HDDs dont die as much as they were in 1990s, thats not even an issue. As for dvds. after 5 yrs noone can guarantee they read perfectly.

  • I bought my first DVD burner back in 2001. Yes, I was always an early adopter for new technology, and the discs I burned bakc then still work perfectly today. Same goes for the CDs that I burned back in 1996. I'm perfectly sold on the backups lasting for as long as I need. As long as you take care of the discs, they'll last.

Seek times are not even an issue. The only problem is the burning time. And with DVDs burning at less than 15 minutes now, even that isn't an issue.

  • So, this can play .ISOs of DVDs with no problem?

  • iso is a file format not a video codec

so no it cant play iso

  • NiteMuscle posted: "So, this can play .ISOs of DVDs with no problem?"

darkhero651 posted: "iso is a file format not a video codec so no it cant play iso"

Yes it can. The media player CAN play iso. I have an iso of Kung Fu Hustle and it plays it flawlessly.

  • NiteMuscle posted: "So, this can play .ISOs of DVDs with no problem?"

Yes it can play ISOs. I was telling darkhero that I have an iso of Kung Fu Hustle and it plays it with no problems.

  • you can't play ISO file - since it's NOT a media container. try playing a case with a guitar in it, lmao! if this particular hdd player is able to "play" iso file - it just means that it smart enough to extract it and mount the content accordingly.

I have an ISO file of Kung Fu Hustle and IT plays it. so what does extension means when it says AVI or MKV? Are those not AVI or MKV? What does it mean when it says ISO then?

  • ISO is archived CD/DVD image. Imagine a regular archive file like ZIP or RAR with a full CD/DVD directory structure in it. I am not surprised WD TV "playing it" - "it just means that it smart enough to extract it and mount the content accordingly" -> from my prev.post. :)

  • nice

    can it show Arabic subtitles?

  • been thinking if i buy this or the popcorn. popcorn is so expensive!? bro, have u tried that on lcd tv or plasma? i have a plasma 50" here and don't know if it will produce crisp picture on .mkv movies.

  • you're right, already have a HDTV 40'' SANSUNG FULL HD 1080P, AND THIS WDTV LOOKS EVEN BETTER.

  • hey i was wondering if you need a hd tv to play videos and stuff??

  • I have an HDTV that comes with something call W.LINK I tried to plug my WD Passport to it, but I can access Videos, Music, etc. Do I have to buy the HD Media Player?

  • no remeber it came with a basic cablew which is the red, yelow and the whit and if u have an hd tv then use an HDMI cable.

hes not even playing it on a flat screen tv his television is that old and the device looks like it work nicley on his old tv

  • looks like you need to upgrade your tv

  • I was thinking about getting the Popcorn Hour...but its a bit out of my pricerange at the moment...may just buy this one.

  • Will play mkv files, and 1080p, but will not play off a usb optical drive... which sucks. But all in all its a bad ass lil media player that plays hd with ease.

  • you sound like you're advertising for WD LOL

  • support DTS format ?

  • Yes, but only through the optical output. So you have to let the optical signal pass through an av-receiver.

  • yes ok! i understand.. thank you very much for reply

  • i guess iam lol

  • are you the phantom in Dont mess with the Zoan ? ^^

  • what about .mkv files 720p 1080p with subtitles? It works?

  • This player accepts USB devices, will it accept a USB DVD drive?

  • thx

  • will this play my anime .mkv files with subs?

  • yes. Atleast it plays for me.

  • So I bought this and unfortunately, I'm returning it back. I have quite a few .ts files and mkv's that either did not play or did play but poorly. Word of caution to the anime folks, those normal and high-res mkv's will play but with no subtitles. What's the point of buying this if I still have to re-convert the files to either burn the subs (Making it a hardsub) or changing it to a .srt file? Blu-ray files suffered from artifacts making it unwatchable. Watching it on a 40" 1080p 120hz Sammy.

  • Works great in a HD TV EVEN HAVE A HDMI PORT, SCAN THE MOVIES ALMOST LIKE A BLUE RAY DISC DEPENDS OF THE QUALITY OF THE FILE, ABOUT THE SOUND THEY CAN DO DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 BUT DEPENDS OF THE FILE TOO. ON MY CRT SCREEN LOOKS EVERYTHING LIKE A DVD QUALITY SO FAR, IM THINKING IN GETTING ANOTHER ONE FOR MY LIVING ROOM THIS LITTLE PIECE OF HARDWARE IS THE BEST INVESTMENT YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW.

  • have you connected it to any 5.1 sound yet. Thinking of getting one soon after a few reviews. Have you put any HD media through it yet as I see you have a CRT screen just thinking what it would be like on a 1080p HD set !!!
