  • I think it is possible to play these pieces in another tempo like Tiersen. What do you think?

I recently recorded something of Tiersen.

I think you have the right tempo!

    Thank you Philipp!

  • @clavis55 Thank you Marcus. It is so long since I recorded this that I can't remember what Tiersen's tempo was. I'm sure you can do your own interpretation as long as it is within the bounds of the score. If you do something radically different, you would have to describe it as a 'paraphrase'!

  • @PSearPianist

I only changed the tempo of the pieces and make more rubati. Thank you very much Philipp. You helped me a lot!!!

    Have a great week!!!

    Markus

  • @PsearPianist: Bonjour, I am a french "fan" of Tiersen...Your interpretation is really good! Have you heard about "Good by Lenin" and "Tabarly"'s soundtrack, both from Yann too?? if not, you should listen.... (the album "Rue des cascades" is amazing too...)

Bon....I'm waiting for a piece of Philip Glass by now... ^^

Thank you for sharing your fingers!

  • @GlassAuChopin Thanks for that. I will look out for the albums you mention. I have recorded some Philip Glass - do search for it on my channel!

  • @PSearPianist I found them, sorry! so I've just listened you playing Wichita Vortex Sutra and the Metamorphosis and...you play them much more better than Glass himself does nowadays!

An other brillant minimalist that maybe you already know: Jeroen Van Veen, and his minimal works...

  • @GlassAuChopin Thank you for that. I don't know Van Veen, but will look him out. Although I would not describe him as a minimalist, I am a big fan of Louis Andriessen.

  • @44433391 If you are referring to sightreading, what i mean is that I would only want to put a video on here that has my considered interpretation of a piece. If I put videos on here of music I had never seen before and represented my first ever play through, they might be full of mistakes, and would not give a proper realisation of the composer's intentions.

  • This is lovely :) I'm learning this (started today) x

  • @r0xyri0t Thank you - and good luck with your own study of the piece!

  • I didn't know Larry David could the piano so well.

  • WHOW,, men,, this is the first time I've heard somebody playing this song such good... this is really AWESOME!!! I loved the way you've played it!!!

  • @DDEntertaiment Thank you - your kind comment is much appreciated!

  • Awesome! :D

  • @AramisHornungMoraes Thank you very much!

  • Fantastic playing I'm guessing you just sight read all of this for the first time maybe? I just started to listen to Tiersen after the Amelie Poulain movie you definitely encourage more people to play

  • Thank you. Although I use the score, I always learn pieces that I video. It would be doing music a disservice to put sightreading here on YouTube!

  • Where did you find the score?

  • Tutorial?

  • I don't know how to make tutorials - but I am sure you will find one somewhere on YouTube.

  • haha, grandpa, you totally rock xD

go on playing like that, mkay?

  • I'm not that old - but thanks for your comment!

  • Wow, you are really good. I can´t play as good as you do, but i am trying to play this piece too, and i find it very hard playing both the left and the right hand at the same time. But i will get better at it eventually :D

  • Thanks for your kind comment. Good luck with your own study of the piece, and playing two hands together. As they say, 'practice makes perfect'!

  • great...just great!!!

  • Thank you!

  • I absolutely adore your interpretation of this melancholy piece. Hope there are more to come!

  • Thank you. I doubt if I will do much more Tiersen (as I have done videos of most of the pieces that I have that are suitable) but I'm sure there are plenty of other things to come!

  • Oh God, this is so beautiful, I could start to cry. That is really impressive. I love all your videos.!

  • Thanks for your kind comment - I am glad you enjoy my videos and hope there are plenty more to come!

  • It was really beautiful, i love the way you play .. im a pianist as well .. and well i also love Yann Tiersen's music. One question do you know where could i get the set "Onze pieces pour piano".. or if i you could send it to me ? .. cause im always looking for sheet music of Y.T.. and i'd love to have it! ..thnks

  • Thank you for your kind comment. For copyright reasons I can't send the music to you. My book was published by BMG France and has a plain white cover. I am not sure if it is in print. However I think that there are various compilation books avalable that contain the pieces.

  • Thankyou so much for putting this up, I didnt even know there was a comptine d'ete no 1! Or the fact that theres a set called "Onze pieces pour piano". I love the way you play, simply beautiful., listeen to it everyday.

Wish I could play like you :)

  • Thank you for your kind comment . I'm glad you enjoy my videos. Keep practising, and you will surely play better than me!

  • :) thanxx

  • really nice, i wish i could play it too.

  • Have a go at it - maybe you can!

  • Wow, lindo

  • Thank you.

  • Nicely done. Personally I prefer this without any use of the sustain pedal, just connecting the notes by hand. Could use polishing in many places, but considering how huge your repertoire is it's understandable that not every piece can be polished to perfection;)

  • Thank you for your comment. It prompted me to listen to it again. For me the amout of pedal is about right. The only 'polishing' I can see that I could do is to bring down the relative volume of some of the broken chord figures - but without excessive use of the soft pedal, I could not do that on my piano, which has quite a bright middle register.

  • I am also busy studing this song and I´ve also got the whole book of onze pieces de piano, it is beautiful! You played really good!

    5 stars.

  • Thank you for your kind comment. The 'Onze Pieces' book is worth having, and I wish you every success in your studies of the pieces in it!

  • Excellent!

I really enjoyed listening to you!

    5 stars.

  • Thank you - I'm glad you liked it!

  • never mind

    i have it allready!;)

  • me encanta esta cancion, y sobre todo yann tiersen!eres un gran pianista!=)

  • Gracias por su comentario muy amable. Me alegro usted disfrutó del vídeo.

  • Thank you - he certainly wrote some very popular piano solos.

  • Excellent work.

Could you please play Rue des Cascades by Yann tiersen?

If you need the sheet music of that song, you can contact me.

    Sincerely

    Daniel

  • Thanks for your kind comment, Daniel. I do not have this piece, and as it is in copyright I would need to buy the book or get it from a library before I play it on YouTube - but i will certainly look out for it!

  • Truly fantastic, one of my favorite pieces by Yann Tiersen.

  • Thanks very much!

  • EXCELLENT JOB!!!!!!

  • Thank you!

  • Hi Phillip, I am currently attempting to learn this piece and I thought I might ask a question of you since you are doing such a wonderful job on it here. :)

I am having trouble with the left hand on the third bass measure, having to keep that lower F pressed while hitting the one-octave-higher G.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I think you are using the pedal, should I be too? If so, does Yann Tiersen have really huge hands or did he just neglect to mark pedal use on the sheet?

  • Thanks for your comment. I have not got particularly large hands, but I can hold the F and the G simultaneously. Actually I do use some pedal so that the piece does not sound too dry, so if you can't stretch a ninth you may be able to create the desired effect using some half-pedalling.

  • OMG are you God?? you are so good playing piano :)

    saludos desde mexico ^^

  • Thanks for your kind comment - and greetings from a (cold) UK!

  • Wow! Great job!

  • Thank you very much!

  • this isn't like the Comptine d'Un Autre Été from the movie right?

  • I think that's a different piece. As far as I know this piece also comes from the movie.

  • Love it,

you did an excellent job playing this song!

    Love from the Netherlands!

  • Thank you very much, and love to you from the UK!

  • thank you so much for posting this wonderful song and thanks for playing :] it was beautiful

  • Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  • it's a kind of classical interpretation, but i like it this way :-)

i'm back after le coucou, glad to see you like french music

    thanks for this good moment.

  • Thanks for your comment - I play quite a lot of French music, some of which is on YouTube.

  • Thanks for posting :) very nicely executed

  • Thank you!

  • Expressively played. Why did you not post Le moulin, la dispute and la valse d'Amelie as well?

  • Thanks. I did not post the other pieces because there are lots of other videos of them (and commercial recordings).

  • But your interpretation might be different and I am sure will be much better than some of the videos already on you tube.

  • Parfait =)

Difficile de faire mieux à part Tiersen lui même !

  • Your video is very soft ,and expressive

    very nice

  • Thanks - I am glad you enjoyed it.

  • PsearPianist

you video is very nice ;)

    Sincerely

  • Thanks. Wonderful playing. I did not know Yann Tiersen before. Thanks for introducing me to this wonderful music.

  • Thanks - he is very popular in France, and on YouTube!

  • very good:D

can you send me that play?

  • Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it. I can't send you the score - it is in copyright. However, books of Yann Tiersen's pieces are readily available from online music sellers.

  • Very attractive Phillip!

  • Thanks Isaac!

  • Any chance of #4? I remember hearing a toy-piano version of it which was surprisingly nicer than the harpsichord one.

There's something about Toy Piano versions that makes them just a bit more... fun, I guess. Wish I could play them on any instrument.

  • You have such perfect tempo! This song is next on my list to learn. Thank you for posting!

  • Thanks for your kind comment. I hope you enjoy learning it!

  • very nice. :)

  • Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  • Beautiful again, this time with a little bit jazzi-hints. Thanks for uploading.

  • Thanks!
