@sallingkash well, that happens if you modify Leopard instalation disc to fit onto single layer DVD, that thing happens because of the media check which doesn't count with such delay and in this state, so there is no power management yet. It happened on every PowerPC mac. But G5 Powermac has high maximum speed of fans and there is 7 of them, its just more noticeable. I have never heard that loudness when doing usual work, even encoding video at full CPU load for many hours.
4gigs of ram and bluray drive its making a hell of a server for storing memory and just downloading "stuff" all day long and deffinetly takes thestress off my mac book pro and when i run windows 7 on it it screams! Love mine!
I have an Early 2004 dual 2.5GHz with 4GB Ram and a 9800 vid card. It never really seemed loud till I got my Early 2008 Mac Pro 8 core. The Mac Pro os nearly silent. Now the G5 seems really loud. Put a brand new 250GB Maxtor in it and installed 10.5.8 on it fresh. Much less fan noise now.
I bet the Mac Pro doesn't sound this awesome ;) The G5's can move ALOT of air, its crazy like I can stand 2 metres away and feel the force of the fans from behind. Now thats a real Mac.
Oh thats loud! My Mac mini gets a little bit hot when I am editing videos for example. But this Power Mac could be compared with a starting kumbo jet...
i love macs but my custom pc has wheels. i want to put a fan on it so big that it rolls itself across the floor lol. but that wont replace my faulty motherboard
To reduce the noise go to System Prefs and under Power Management choose Reduces Processor Performance unless you use Adobe, 3d projects or games like Sim City 4. It works then pretty quiet, even better than my previous G4 1.2 ghz (encore/st extension). But the fact is that mine was loud too during the Leopard installation process. Cheers!
no you wont you will nee to purchcase a retail copy as the grey install disk for the macbook pro is compiled for that machine and only that machine, plus the macbook pro uses an intel cpu, the G5 uses a PowerPC cpu
Question: I just bought a G5 Quad core and wanted to know if we(you and I) are safe from the earlier problems with earlier liquid cooled G5's cooling systems? In other words, they leaked and caused major problems for those with 2.5 and 2.7 dual core G5s, but very very rarely on the Quad core.
ins normal state, it does that only when bootig leopard instalation (optimized for single layer DVDs) burned on DVD-R disc, it just take longer. So the power and fan management isnt loaded for about 10 minutes, after first screen of leopard instalation, it came back to normal. I burned three discs before I figure it out :-) .
this sounds similar to my G5 when importing music or pictures though not as loud, have you cleaned out your grill lately there might be alot of dust built up on it thats making it go this loud. the cpu's are getting too hot which in time will overheat then your in the poo!
if its is so noisy can i just put leopard installing and then it dosent make that nois?

Dont panic if this happens.
This happens when you enter the boot menu on the iMac G5.
Nothing bad really.

This is older G5 from 2003 (AGP, 2xSingle core), do you have got water cooled version?
cubiczech 2 years ago
Yes the quad is watercooled. It's not quite as noisy as the dual 2 Ghz which sounds like a jet engine even two rooms away.

Does the quad G5 (the one with the water cooling-system) also have 9 fans to be cooled with (like the first PM G5 ever from 2003)?

i wonder if my vacuum has a g5 chip. it made the same sound when the kids put leopard (my leopard dvd) in their, or atleast tried too.

in other words the G5 will stop working altogether, sorry to say this, but to get it repaired will be expensive especially from apple!
