MyBlizzardBoy is completely correct. Jack was completely into character for the Joker that TIM BURTON needed and wanted for HIS batman films, which was more like the comic books. Heath portrayed the Joker that CHRISTOPHER NOLAN'S batman films needed, which was based on a more realism scale.

Both of them were brilliant with their performances, I think.

Heath Ledger brought something amazing and inexplicable to that role, something which jack's performance somehow lacked, althoough each were tremendous.

However I have to say that I personally prefer Heath's dark, sinister portrayal, because the demonic inner workings of his character's mind made for incredible entertainment. Overall, both were great, but I think Heath came out on top :)

Nicholson played a better Joker simply because he actually played the Batman character. Ledger played a character molded by Frank Miller for the Dark Knight series not Batman. Miller's character was a psychotic terrorist and nothing else. The real DC Joker started off as a thief and was developed into being psychotic through various experiences throughout the series. The biggest difference is he actually joked(Joker!!!) and that's the way Nicholson played him better.

Well in all honesty they are different characters...Jack Nickolson's Joker, actually Tim Burton's Joker, was closer to the original character. Heath Leadgers, or Crhis Balle's, character is bloodier, more brutal and closer to the pschycho mastermind of Allan Moore's take on the character.

But i have to admit, that i was dazed by Leadger. The guy was chilling to the bone...I kwow it sounds crazy, but i havent felt this way for a performance of a bad guy since Hopkin's Dr. Lecter...

Of course, a Nolan movie couldn't fit a Nicholson Joker and vice versa. Burton's was more drama and dark while Nolan's is more action and modern SFX.
