all i have to say is the movies had different concepts. Nolan's movie is a re-vision of what he thinks his gotham city should be like on a true to life type of setting. The old movies were of the comic books of the past, just make believe cartoonish shit. Jack played the cartoonish oldschool comic book joker and Heath played the re-vision serious sadistic maniac screwball joker. Personally i love both genres, if anybody is a true batman fan you should love both actors and visions
You can pick your favorite, but you can't compare the two. Heath ledgars joker was demented and twisted but still made you like him. Jacks joker.....more sick. They are both amazing
I like both in 89 they did a pretty good job with the make up for jack and i think it is more of the comic look like you would expect but heaths is more modern age cause he needs a more criminal look too other than a clown
Jacks was comic and crazy. Heath was definitely more real and complex....so i mean ya its hard to compare. i mean they are both gods of acting. you just cant compare
MyBlizzardBoy is completely correct. Jack was completely into character for the Joker that TIM BURTON needed and wanted for HIS batman films, which was more like the comic books. Heath portrayed the Joker that CHRISTOPHER NOLAN'S batman films needed, which was based on a more realism scale.
Both of them were brilliant with their performances, I think.
I like them both very much, but i like Heath a bit more. He acts scary and creeps people out through the entire movie and i love it. They are both very good actors though. R.I.P Heath Ledger
Heath Ledger brought something amazing and inexplicable to that role, something which jack's performance somehow lacked, althoough each were tremendous.
However I have to say that I personally prefer Heath's dark, sinister portrayal, because the demonic inner workings of his character's mind made for incredible entertainment. Overall, both were great, but I think Heath came out on top :)
No, i believe that jack was much more true to the joker than heath ever was. Its about humor, not terror, and if you guys dont agree, then apparently you must not know how the jokers character is supposed to be. Read the comics, watch all the series
what do yu mean "how it's SUPPOSED to be"??? Acting is about self-expression and interpretation. Just because Heath did a different take on the original joker doesn't mean that his take is invaluable or "true". I for one believe that Heath's take on the joker was far more intriguing, but do you see me forcing my opinions on anyone else? no, so what right do you have to do that? none.
@spunnet You gotta admit though, turning the Joker from a joker into a merciless, antisocial mass murdering bat-shit crazy genius was a good move. And Heath Ledger also did a wonderful job.
I think they both were good in their own ways, they both had completly different directors, Tim Burton Vs Chris Nolan, Heath was more dark but jack did have a dark deeper side in a creepy way, I genuinly think they were both really good in seperate ways, However, I did see the most recent Batman's first so naturally I prefer those but i do like Tim Burtons version too
It's technically a tie, now. As far as the result and reasons why it's a tie? It's too biased as corrupt to even begin to explain why it really 'wasn't a tie'. Skill vs thrill, the character can only be played one way, but. Also, can only appeal in another.
elvismusic71! your stupid! jack didnt have to change his voice, because he was born to play that role... that's why they payed him so much to do it! i saw batman when i was 3 when it came out, loved it, still love it! did the audio engineers change heath ledger`s voice? they did , didn`t they ?
when i see jack scare me , heath doesnt scare me ..but ! ... i think ... that escencially both papers are fcking nice !!! i lov THE JOKER A... HE HATES PEOPLE ..AND he proves that people are weak ..and i love that un both movies !!!
I find them both great but I honeslty like Heath's joker better. I like its sinical, lunatic way of being. Jack's jocker is to jolly and goofy for my taste. Oh, and stop Criticizing people because they prefere Heath, It's there opinion and they have the freedom to say it. if you prefer Jack the congrats thats your taste so stop Fucking around. TY
both are great and the reason nicholson was chosen was because he was that character who could betray the joker!it all depends of what style of joker you prefer funny or lunitic?i prefer ledger because it was more realistic, but as far as a comic goes jack was better!
People are obviously picking the new Joker over Jack because they either didn't watch the original, or they didn't read the comics. I mean Heath did an astounding job, but Jack was the real joker.

I watched the original and I am a huge Batman comic book reader and I say Ledger was much better. Even Jerry Robinson the co creater fo the character has said Ledger was better. Jack was not the real Joker, he was Jack in makeup.
jack nicholson is only jack nicholson what kind of comment is that to make
1. you cant compare the two because the directors obviously had a different approach on The Joker
2. heath a excellent job on in his role, and i didn't know he died until the movie came out so that whole only because he died stuff is out the window,
I like them both. I probably should detail more then that but then I'd just get flamed for "being wrong" on MY opinnion.. I don't need that crap. I like them both for their different takes, enough said......I would honestly love to see a battle between them though, that would be epic.
Ledger's Joker is more realistic than Nicholson's Joker. I believe that Ledger delivered a Joker that could exist in this day and age. Jack was portraying himself portraying the Joker.
Instead of being gay like the rest of the people here because they obviously didnt see both, im going to have to agree with you. I like nicholson's joker better because it was how i (liked the new one) and many people who don't care for the new movie believe he should be. Heath's is only quote"better"end quote because he died. None of you fanboys(Not you tpowell31) would give a rats ass about him if he wasn't dead.
No son, Ledger was better because he actually played The Joker. Jack played Jack in clown paint. He didn't even bother to change his voice. Great acting is becoming your character, Ledger did that. You can't really judge because both actors played such different characters. No one is better than the other they are different so you can't say who is better. Hillary would beat them both anyway.
Okay, seriously, Heath Ledger did not kill himself. Let's just get that straight. And another thing, Heath's joker is ten thousand times better than Jack's.
I didn't want Heath to destroy my beloved Nicholson Joker. But I can only sit here and admit that Heath's was light years ahead, and that The Dark Knight is the best Batman film ever made.
For me, Heath played a Joker that was so dark, and cruel, yet his joker was also extremely playful and psychotic. Ledger was pure genius in that movie. Nicholson's Joker was more money grubbing, but the Joker isn't supposed to want anything other than to make chaos, and burn the world down. Basically, in my opinion, Heath is the better joker.
Why can you guys under stand that the joker played by Nicholson and Ledger isn't that joker? Cesaer Romero is the joker. From the day he created batman Bob Kane never had the joker that dark that insane or that evil. He was and still is a bad mf but thats just not Bob Kanes joker. That being said Nicholson fanboys need to give up. Too fat too short and just not the jokers style at all not to take from jack he himself was amazing just not visually, But Ledger has it all Funny, Scary, and Insane.
By the way if you actually watched the first movie instead of just agreeing with what others say and did a body count and considered the things Nicholson's Joker did he portrayed the character in a more evil manner.
-Tell me something, my friend. You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?
-Now comes the part where I relieve you, the little people, of the burden of your failed and useless lives. But, as my plastic surgeon always said: if you gotta go, go with a smile!!
Nicholson played a better Joker simply because he actually played the Batman character. Ledger played a character molded by Frank Miller for the Dark Knight series not Batman. Miller's character was a psychotic terrorist and nothing else. The real DC Joker started off as a thief and was developed into being psychotic through various experiences throughout the series. The biggest difference is he actually joked(Joker!!!) and that's the way Nicholson played him better.
todays joker told a whole bunch of jokes and an awesome magic trick. wheres your sense of humor? Besides jack looks like my grandmother. Jack still did a good job for the time.
I think Ledger has successfully unseated Nicholson as the Joker in the mind of the masses.
Oh, and Ledger's character was closer to the original comic book Joker (Batman #1 1940) and the post 1980s version of the character. Nicholson's Clown Prince borrowed much more from the 50s and 60s representation of the character.
heath is a good joker and he did his job but never caught the fun spirit of the joker like jack did or mark( animated series for those of u who dont know) jack and mark were both funny and badass , heath was just scary more like a boggy man... plus joker doesnt wear make up! all we know about heath's joker is the his dad was little rough with him as a kid and he couldnt hack and now he is a sicko.... jacks joker had history with way cause the joker killed his parents and Bats makes ther Joker
Well Heath's Joker is actual closer to what the comic book or graphic novels Joker is actually like. Dark, and demented. As far as the history of the Joker he never really had any. Thats the beauty of the character you don't know were he got sick mind. it wasn't until the 70's or 80's when people started to make a back ground for the Joker.
HAHA! Hilary is the scariest looking one out of all of them!LOL! I just saw the 1989 version on TV today and Nicholson was just creepy and funny. i thought he played it really well. I havent seen the new movie and probally won't until DVD, but Heath looks scary and really serious. IDK though both are really good actors.
They are, although Heath Ledger's version is much better; you really should see it in theaters ago. I saw it 8 hours ago and I already want to go back and see it again!
Ledger is hands down the best Joker ever. I'm going to see this movie again later on tonight it was that damn good lol. Well done Ledger you WILL be sorely missed :(
Well in all honesty they are different characters...Jack Nickolson's Joker, actually Tim Burton's Joker, was closer to the original character. Heath Leadgers, or Crhis Balle's, character is bloodier, more brutal and closer to the pschycho mastermind of Allan Moore's take on the character.
But i have to admit, that i was dazed by Leadger. The guy was chilling to the bone...I kwow it sounds crazy, but i havent felt this way for a performance of a bad guy since Hopkin's Dr. Lecter...
More like Jack's the twisted one with psychological issues while Heath's the direct sato-masochistic one who, with modern special effects, can do stuff like burn a huge pile of money and blow a bank up.
Ledger's Joker actually gives me the creeps and makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck I LIKE IT LOL. Nicholson's Joker was more commecial and yet still good as a villian. But I really wouldnt wanna be in a dark alley with Ledger's Joker ...uh-huh lol. On the other hand I could probably smoke a blunt with Nicholson's Joker lol now how sick would that be lol
To each his own. Ledger's Joker in that jail cell scene made me lol hard. He's definitely got a much better Joker laugh than Nicholson, but I was freaked out by his Joker back in 1989.
jack's joker was perfect for tim burton, , different time,as is heaths version is perfect for nolan. diffrent era diffrent time. be realistic here.... do you really think either joker could of been in either movie ? i think not.
to me, i think we will all see what nolans version of the joker will be like and be in for a treat and then say to our selfs , yep , that was a great movie, the dark knight will go down in history as a classic as did batman did.
Jacks Joker isn't bad or anything, but its basically Jack Nicholson.... playing Jack Nicholson, except with make up. Heaths Joker clearly took more work, looks cooler, and is more sinister.

Hillary Clinton wins with that shit eating grin... She doesn't even need make up. Scary as shit.

5 Stars for the Cesaer Romero throwback and the Hilary reference!! This was a funny, well put together little flick.

Id love to see a real jesterish joker big nose sharp teeth with an english accent it would be great, but heath fucking RULED IT.

You can't compare them. They are so different. They are both perfect portrayals. I'm not picking a winner.

heath is a good joker and he did his job but never caught the fun spirit of the joker like jack did or mark( animated series for those of u who dont know) jack and mark were both funny and badass , heath was just scary more like a boggy man... plus joker doesnt wear make up! all we know about heath's joker is the his dad was little rough with him as a kid and he couldnt hack and now he is a sicko.... jacks joker had history with way cause the joker killed his parents and Bats makes ther Joker
HOOLIGANISM1982 3 years ago
Well Heath's Joker is actual closer to what the comic book or graphic novels Joker is actually like. Dark, and demented. As far as the history of the Joker he never really had any. Thats the beauty of the character you don't know were he got sick mind. it wasn't until the 70's or 80's when people started to make a back ground for the Joker.

Heath Ledger did a much better version of the Joker in my opinion, the new movie was great, everyone should go see it!

Nicholson is closer to the actual comic books...
Ledger is just 1000000X better times infinity.

Lecter...
bapa84 3 years ago
all depends on what your looking for. jack is a funnier version, while ledger is more phsycotic(dont know if i spelt that right) and scary.
calabo12345 3 years ago
More like Jack's the twisted one with psychological issues while Heath's the direct sato-masochistic one who, with modern special effects, can do stuff like burn a huge pile of money and blow a bank up.

LOL on H.Clinton!! Jack all the way for now. I still have to see Ledger as the joker before I can trully judge.

On the other hand I could probably smoke a blunt with Nicholson's Joker lol now how sick would that be lol
ttdtd 3 years ago 3
To each his own. Ledger's Joker in that jail cell scene made me lol hard. He's definitely got a much better Joker laugh than Nicholson, but I was freaked out by his Joker back in 1989.
Zerathos986 3 years ago
Jack Nicholson played Joker the way Joker should be played. Heath's Joker didn't take more work, he's just a crazy guy wearing makeup to me.
blackbtty123 3 years ago
jack's joker was perfect for tim burton, , different time,as is heaths version is perfect for nolan. diffrent era diffrent time. be realistic here.... do you really think either joker could of been in either movie ? i think not.
lorndarken 3 years ago
Ha!! i never thought about it that way. You are so right about that
EVILRESIDENT007 3 years ago
to me, i think we will all see what nolans version of the joker will be like and be in for a treat and then say to our selfs , yep , that was a great movie, the dark knight will go down in history as a classic as did batman did.
lorndarken 3 years ago
To be quite honest, a Joker couldn't exist anyway, but for the director's interpretation, yes, each Joker fits the director.
Of course, a Nolan movie couldn't fit a Nicholson Joker and vice versa. Burton's was more drama and dark while Nolan's is more action and modern SFX.
Zerathos986 3 years ago
Jacks Joker isn't bad or anything, but its basically Jack Nicholson.... playing Jack Nicholson, except with make up. Heaths Joker clearly took more work, looks cooler, and is more sinister.
TheFragile89 3 years ago
1ST comment!! and i think i will like heath ledger better more because he looks a lot more sinister and creepy. but thats my opinion
