  • those guys from 0:09 till 0:16 in the lower left corner, they definitely KNEW what groove was going on at that night!

  • my good this woman has an incredibile voice

  • Ella Fitzgerald is the goddess of the music!!! :D

  • Even she sing rock'n'roll, it's always blues.

  • i love ella. always will!

  • 2:38, the guy with his hands folding and checking the time deserves a box in the mouth

  • she got the blues

  • Hell they better clap for Ella

  • @diridiridom Obviously my comment is about the singers the world does know about, since I'm not psychic I choose not to comment about unknown artists and their vocal gifts...Difficult to believe, however, that someone out there has a voice as good as the greatest one the world has yet heard and somehow remains unknown...

  • Ella can sing anything and it literally puts a new spin on it

  • It is a travesty that the audience is sitting still. One of the best original real soulful singers we are ever going to see. I wish i was there....

  • OH I love you tube! How have I missed this one? :-)

  • OMG!!!!!! my ears just came, i'm in love again!! I'm hiperventilating!!!

  • Akinot1318, yes there are plenty of other notable female voices, in English or other languages, but no one is as good or as versatile as Ella. There's a reason other singers as varied as Sinatra and Maria Callas described Fitzgerald as "The Voice", and that's simply because she was in a class of her own. Not only did she possess a triple octave voice, she also had complete control over it, and was sublime at song interpretation.

  • @paddywackswanson and of course we can't know every single singer in the world, and SO we can't say Ella is the greatest for sure: there may be someone as good as her who hasn't become famous...still I think she's the greatest. ;D

  • Greatest female voice of the 20th century.

  • @paddywackswanson who sings in English. We have other females voices as great as hers in other languages. In my country, Brazil, we have Elis Regina, for instance.

  • @Akinot1318 i think comparing brazilian myth elis regina to a universal myth as ella fitgerald is a bit inappropriate...jazz and modern music's language is unquestionably english, not brazilian or whatever...in my country, Italy, Mina is known as one of the greatest voices of all time, but not internationally...

  • padapapapam I'm loving it:)

  • No matter what this woman sings it is always off the charts!!!!!!!

  • I Love this cover!

  • the worst crowd ever lol!

  • @jazzmaster31 i know right. i would've peed pants.

  • Television audiences were well behaved back then until Dick Clark came out with American Bandstand.

  • Great stuff from Ella but what's with the audience?? They're like statues!

  • Noooossa

  • This is an amazing cover this is how to cover a classic.

  • This is an amazing cover this is how to cover a classic.

  • Great Ella, she makes look even littler the four insects from Liverpool

  • @scurpenin Taradín.

  • It's always confusing to me why people go out of their way to give a thumbs down to videos like this. It's freakin' *Ella Fitzgerald* for goodness sake! She is LEGEND and this is a fantastic rendition! :))

  • Ella Fitzgerald. Singing The Beatles. THIS IS AMAZING!

  • ELLA covering THE BEATLES.

    OH MY..

  • exactly the same voice of the asian kid with guitar... just one billion times better...

  • You can't argue with talent like this

  • this is talent, i was watching this video and the crowd like wtf is wrong with these people... smack them one by one, Ella you rule and your music touches me :D

  • Im sitting in a wooden chair and I'm too cool, smart, white, and wealthy to express any excitement during this amazing performance.

  • "When you let her into your skin..." LOL Well, the skin is a permeable membrance after all.

  • Absolutely LOVE it!

The way she plays with Paul's hymn-like song rhythmically and melodically is simply outstanding and astounding. And it's hard to find someone to do that with a Beatles song, especially one like "Hey Jude," but Ella did it.

  • this makes me feel fantastic ... smiley and happy .. what a woman... love her..love to see what her siblings are doin ...sgotta be soul carried forth..

  • She make it better

  • The greatest voice ever been on earth

  • I totally agree, check out the guy in front with his arms crossed. How rude!!!

  • who's on the piano???? barron?

  • I think the 'unresponsiveness' was just how people did things at that time. It's not like now whereby everyone raises their hands and screams at the singer haha.

  • hopefully the crowd was just mesmerized

They was snob's, just look her suits and her faces, and only white people...

    That sucks!

  • More than blank stares - she is actually soaring right over their heads. They came out to hear Mack The Knife. It was quite controversial at the time her covering of pop for some Jazz purists, but that is was made her a great artist - she could sing anything!

  • Viva Ella!!! muchos podrán cantar bien, pero Ella sabe interpretar, pareciera realmente que estuviera aconsejando a alguien.Ella is much more than Jazz!!!

  • they are not stiff they are just not used to responding to live music in a manner that reflects everyone's expectations

  • What I would give to see Ella Fitzgerald live.

One of the best talents ever.

The singers you have today don't compare to the actual talent like Ella, Frank and Dean.

  • i have this vinyl XD

  • @0000song0000 what!!!!great i dream of having a vinyl by ella or the beatles!!!!!! post a photo!!!

  • Hand folded, sitting there with blank stares.... She must have hated this croud.

  • Ella and The Beatles are my all time faves, I'd have fainted if I got to see this!!! <3

  • Ahh! I lurve this!

  • ¿Qué onda con ese público tan seco? ¿Cómo es posible que estando frente a la Primera Dama delJazz, puedan estar con esa actitud de hueva?

  • I love her interpretations of the current songs during that time period. She is really jammin'! She is singing it like she MEANS it! Jude better wake up and listen!!!

  • I wish she had sung a few more contemporary numbers...I would have adored an album of them. We will NEVER see the like of her voice again.

  • they are a jazz audiance the clap at the end not chear scream or pogo like watching the sex pistols, but they loved it

  • Love you love you love love you love you love love love love love love love you Ella, I ain't got nuthin but love for you baby!

  • Is there any song Ella can't make her own? ~ ~ She is simply ~ AMAZING!!!!!!!!

  • how could this people stand still, just looking at her that way?

they were made of stone, or what!?

for Christ sake! it's Ella singing!

  • @OneBirdFree they singer like lady gaga, justin bieber more i guess... :P

  • I don't think the crowd was expecting a cover of the Beatles. After all it was the Montreux JAZZ Festival in France. This was also a year after the song released so it probably wasn't so widely appealing as it is like today. Great performance none the less.

  • @smallmaniac

Hello USA, here's some tutoring in Geography:

I'm sorry but Montreux wasn't, isn't and will never be in France! It's in Switzerland!!!

  • @groovyway71 Apologies. I honestly don't recall why I thought/said it was in France. But now I know it's in Switzerland, so thanks.

  • The guy up front at 2:40 is checking his watch and looking like it's the last place he wants to be - very strange audience.

  • Dios en el cielo, escucha a Ella Fietzgerald cuando está estresado...

  • oh wow!

  • I love it! Thx for posting Cate

  • God! I love Ella.....

  • I would have been going bezerk in the audience! WOW!!!

  • I would have been going bezerk in the audience! Wow!

  • A Perfect Jazz diva! Swing 'n' soul no matter what!!

Thanks Ella for a perfect performance one more!

    She's Really a Music goddess !!

  • You all ought to hear Ella's version of "Can't Buy Me Love." MAGNIFICENT!!!!!

  • a goddess!

  • Sie hat so etwas besonderes an sich!

    Grossartige Saengerin!

  • Uma das poucas versões de Beatles que deram certo. No caso, genial versão.

  • Yes they are lame - but at the time believe it at the time this was cutting edge. A jazz singer singing The Beatles - but that is what made E.F. a total pioneer - she was way way ahead....She wanted to be down with the kids like Miles Davis always ahead of the curve - the world's changing baby - and it it still is....And this still sounds fresh!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • so awesome cover!!!!

  • i love this clip. Morgan I checked out jesse palter's rendition and you're right. I love it!

  • they so lame....... they just sitting there

  • This is wonderful! Thank you so much for posting!

  • Came across this after while searching covers of pop songs, and though Ella is the master- young vocalist Jesse Palter and her band really are doing a great job of following the tradition! Worth checking out. 4 stars for ella though!

  • i love you ella !!

  • i would resurrect her so i can hear her sing live..

  • Beautiful song.

  • Isn't she just amazing?

  • This is of course a completely different story, but whatever Ella is singing, brings joy to the people.

I was quite surprised to find this, I have a lot of music from Ella, but that she sung this, I was not aware till today.

  • Ella has one of the best voices ever!!!

  • pure talent. She could turn her hand to anything and be simply angelic.

  • muy bueno!!!!

  • she's awsome I just adore her

  • i hate how unresponsive the crowd was. awgh. i would given anything to have been able to watch her live.

  • I know.... what's wrong with them? She's amazing...

  • yeah..she was. Simply love Ella. Her cover of sunshine of my love was pure magic too!

  • @kokede 2:56 the girl in front of her...

  • @azzerqaz they are swiss. always cold and boring

  • @azzerqaz they're from a time where being musically amazing was the norm

  • @sparkZmtl - I understand what your saying but that's no excuse, and the notion that Ella Fitzgerald is 'the norm' is ridiculous.

  • @azzerqaz whats wrong? well its 1969 and she is black.

  • @cro508 Sadly, I think that you are correct...PEACE.

  • @BigBlackRod sad but true.. lol

  • @cro508 I disagree with your assumption. First of all, she had been a major recording star since she released, "A Tisket, A Tasket" in 1938 (thirty years before) and was an international jazz icon by the time of this recording. Audiences were different then. Sometimes more reserved. I like to think in this case they were just caught up in her performance and were too mesmerized to react.

  • Comment removed

  • @kokede I agree! What's going with that people?

  • @kokede you don't generally get much response from a Jazz audience... as it's more about the music than the performance, they keep themselves more reserved and applaud after solos an such

  • @kokede they were probably cool enough to realize she shoudn't be selling out to fucking rock shit. Her forte is Jazz, she shreads jazz, no need for this.

  • @kokede Montreux crowds are notorious for being incredibly rude.

  • @kokede haha they're too white!

  • omg..she was already 52 here. Still sounded fantastic..

  • GOSH! SHE'S THE BEST.

  • Tommy Flanagan (p), Frank Delarosa (b), Ed Thigpen (d).

  • jesus christ..... i just love her voice.....

  • this woman is just awesome!!! XD

  • I'm a total Beatlemaniac and all, but I have to wonder if seeing the great Ella do this song after seeing her do songs from the American songbook (Gershwin, Porter, etc.), I get the feeling that the Fab Four won't hold up as being quite as high an artistic achievement.

  • Man, I'd love to hug that big, beautiful woman.

  • This woman can do everything with her voice.

    Amazing...

  • She took a pop song and turned to a jazz tema.

  • outstanding talent !!!

    michael

  • Ella is the best! I love this song!!!!

  • ELLA ROCKED IT! Her voice is truly magic. I love the Piano!

  • at first I wasn't sure what to think, but the more I listen, the more I like it, and from now on I'm pretty sure this is going to be the only rendition of Hey Jude I'll be able to enjoy.

  • Ella's Voice = Sex!

    well at least

  • sick version wicked Miss Ella, I'm sure the Beatles loved it!

  • Well, if anyone could get away with this, it was Ella.

  • The intro was better then the Beatles. But I still prefer the guitar to the piano.

  • DANG, this woman is soooo amazing! LOVE HER

  • wow!

  • que excelente voz , como ella no habra nadie

  • What can be said? No words, only the sweet, sweet sounds of Ella!

But not only was she the best entertainer that's EVER lived... but she was SUCH a nice, friendly, loving, caring person in real life! Everything about her is lovable!!!

  • ella oure so amazing

  • Very interesting cover! Ella is definitely something else!

  • wow... i dunno how much i like this. i'm a die hard Beatles fan... she got some of the words wrong too.

  • Ella the Great!!!

  • Thank you for the video!!

    Great!!

    I'm moved!!

    I love Ella.

And I love The Beatles too!!

    Thank you.

    From Tokyo.

  • This ain't like the Beatles, she really makes it Ella!

  • Thank you!!

    Great!!

    Jazz,Soul,R&B,and R&R,She can sing everything.

  • genius genius genius. There is no one like Ella and never will be.

  • Thx for the video
