  • she was my favorite Glinda as well

  • <3

  • @rebekahbryan understand that clara while 26 has the mind of a 12 year old. what kind of voice should clara have? a very very light soprano? or a more developed trained sound of a grown woman? katie clarke, yes, is not the world's best singer, but for the role? it works. she sounds like the way clara would. a little rough around the edges to match clara's young naivete.

  • I can't believe she learned this part in just a couple of days and gave a performance THIS good!

  • 2:05

  • great actress...but she just cant sing this song..2:06..........

  • @igardrisc95 i agree but damn.. that emotion

  • @AlyInWonderlnd Katie Clarke and Kelli O'Hara haha not Kelly Clarke.

  • *tear *tear

  • Wow!!!! Katie Clarke is a really pretty girl!!!! I want her dress and locket!!!! Can someone tell me where I can get those things?!

  • Katie rehearsed for 2 days right before performing this in front of a live audience and TV. AND she apparently was sick!

  • WOW!!!! Katie has the eyes of a child as she sings this song.....it's absolute magic!!!!!

  • this is the first time i seen this happen watch at 3:01 watch her right eye! cray cray!

  • major chills. i got to see KRC as Galinda in Wicked after being hooked on her portrayal of Clara for a while. she's an outstanding performer.

  • Beautiful. Katie does an absolutely incredible job.

  • Man I wish more Broadway shows would air on PBS then I would actually watch that boring station. Goddamn Equity!

  • HECK YEAH!!!!!!! This is my Choras song.

  • i <3 Katie Rose Clarke

  • personally, i much prefer Katie Clarke's acting AND voice to that of Kelli O'Hara. Clarke's voice is perfect for the role of Clara. Its sweet and innocent and young. and absolutley wonderful.

  • well, i think it's possible and important to act AND sing well, with that said Katie did a beautiful job.plus, why are people getting all nasty about "singers getting parts over actors?"it is called MUSICAL theatre and if you should be mad at anyone getting parts,it should be the celebrities that have absolutly NO TALENT whatsoever.i have seen performers who shall remain nameless,(oh what the hell Mel B in Rent she was beyond scary!)who couldn"t ACT or SING their parts well at all!

  • @hottieho13... but at the same time... the original in rent (aka daphne ruga vega) couldn't sing either... haha. but i guess that's an argument for a whole other thread!

  • @moonlightsky31 lol, yeah you got a point there!

  • @moonlightsky31 yes she can she does differently

  • There are tears building up in my eyes. Katie is an astonishing actress. I just wish I could see this beautiful show JUST ONCE! I hope it comes to Miami someday soon so I can see it...

  • There are tears building up in my eyes. Katie is an astonishing actress. I just wish I could see this beautiful show JUST ONCE! I hope it comes to Miami someday soon so I can see it...

  • she is beautiful

  • @AlyInWonderlnd I agree with both comments I've seen like this... However, in South Pacific, I felt it... I geuss she couldn't get into this one... Not that it makes it any less true...

  • can someone tell me what this song is about?? like what is she singing about? I am a tad confused

  • @Liv4music95 Love. I haven't seen the show, but I am completely infatuated with this song so I wanted to have a context. And from what I got she is expressing this feeling she has that is love. Basically her explaining what love is doing to her and how it makes her feel. But someone please correct me or give me a more precise answer.

  • Katie Rose Clarke is perfection. Thats all that needs to be said.

And that stage is weird lol :) :)

  • Katie Clarke is perfection.

  • The first time I watched this, I cried through the whole thing.....Kellie really is amazing in this (acting) and singing too, but she has Clara spot on in terms of acting....I prefer Matt Morrison as Fabrizio....Wish he had been around for this & I hope he comes back to do the LFLC South Pacific on Aug 18th....

  • @AlyInWonderlnd I absolutely agree...The acting in this production on the part of both Kellie & Victoria just slayed me the first time I saw this....There is something in both of them that captures all the yearning of both love found & love lost. Just a perfect jewel of a play & wonderful performances by all...Though I would have preferred to see Matt Morrison in the role of Fabrizzio....

  • This is my new "happy song". LOL! I love it. :)

  • what is this play about.?

  • I've been searching for a decent performance of this piece so that I could get some ideas for my voice lesson. This performance is so much more than decent. It's breath-taking. Katie Clarke's acting is fantastic!

  • 6 people dislike it. they must be deaf.

  • @ThatQuirkyChick you should be more specific, emotionally deaf

  • she performed in a very intimate show at TETA last year that I was blessed to see...she sang BEAUTIFULLY...just her fave pieces to sing. she sang this, as well as several others. sigh i was blessed!

  • why does she sing this song? what's it about?

  • @1broadwaystar She's trying to show her mother that even though she may not be the smartest or most perfect person, she knows what makes her happy and how she sees the world. Her mother, who's been thinking that she has to make all of Clara's decisions (because she sustained a head injury that has her permanently stuck as a 12-year-old), realizes that she can't keep living her life for her.

  • I saw a local production of this show a year or so ago. Unfortunately, the show was just a bit too ambitious for the local theater, and it was turned into a tedious mess. The performers were earnest enough, but they were just in over their heads.

  • Too bad; thanks for supporting it anyway. I've got a thing for this score.

  • "Daddy doesn't love you! Look at his eyes for once! Look at yourself in the mi--"

  • FABULOUS!!! im OBSESSED!!!

  • EPIC! im singing this fer an audition

  • Good choice. Good luck!

  • I think Katie is better. First because she was the first Clara I was introduced to and I think she embodies innocence and the spirit of the character better. She brings a more childish element to the character that should be there but isn't as strong in Kellie's preformance.

  • i kind of like the she sings it better than kelli. i prefer the musical theater voice to the opera voice. and if i had to choose between better acting or better singing, i'd choose better acting

  • Having seen both, Kelli sang the part better than Katie, and Katie acted the part better than Kelli.

  • I agree.

  • Beautiful! Just beautiful!

  • she's such a good actress

  • I thought this was really good. Her dress is quite pretty. Very flattering.

  • Comment removed

  • The only thing I wish Lucas & Guettel would have done was shown through Clara's speech that she suffered from brain damage and could not speak very well (like the novella). The plot would make more sense, and you would understand more why the mother would let her daughter go.

  • I'm auditioning for this role on Monday...I'm so excited!!

  • haha, its Katie Clarke ;)

    but i agree completely!

  • The woman playing the mother is Victoria Clark.

  • there's not a certain way to sing it.

why dont YOU sing it, then put it on youtube, so we can rate it 1 star :P

  • i love katie :)

  • Victoria Clark is so amazing in this show

  • im soo upset I never saw it on broadway. :-( but this is beautiful. I mean shes no Kelly .. but there are few like kelly

  • 1:57 thru 2:48 is so beautiful, the orchestrations her voice, the words and her acting meld wonderfully, the way the music builds...mmm its so good!

  • mmm i don't think the song was right for her voice, but it was really pretty.

  • That made me cry.

    So gorgeous.

  • this is beautiful.

  • i met katie rose a tour performance of The Light in the Piazza once, and she was so sweet.

  • I dunno... I liked Kelli O´Hara a lot more.

  • Yeah, she is *very* good in this. Powerful acting...

  • I saw her in Rochester in Wicked and didn't even know it was her until I looked it up!!! lol

  • LMAO! I just found this, and running through the playlists of LP I'm thinking, "Geeze, she would make a good Glinda..." Didn't know she is/was in Wicked.

  • yeah, i figured that out a couple days ago.

    it made me sad:(

so im probably not going to see it anymore- mostly because i couldnt raise the money anyways:)

  • I go to the same college that Katie Clarke graduated from and they stress acting through the song there and I think she can act through the song better than Kelli ever could. :D Awesome job Katie

  • I totally agree except I think the director picked her because her mix goes soooo incredibly high and she doesn't have to flip into her head voice which makes a more uniform sound. she also sounds alot younger because of it.... I still prefer Kelli haha

  • I don't hear any screeching...just a solid soprano mix.

  • Shut up, you snob. And become acquainted with musical theater, where people can sing with emotion. Also, you're not convincing anyone that you know what you're talking about by spelling 'screeching' wrong. I heard no screeching, and apparently neither did you.

  • HAHA you take this shit WAYY too seriously. chill.

  • okay... I just bared through that again so i can show what I'm talking about.. 1:16, 1:25, 2:07, 2:33, 2:38... may not be what you consider screeching, but the inflection in her voice (that starts of WAY sharp) at the beginning of the note is obnoxious, and that's what I'm talking about.

  • I truely think what your talking about helps the piece's emotion connect better with the audience, because when I listen to her versus Kelli I def feel like Katie connects with the song better

  • or maybe it was the fact that she was 21 and being filmed for PBS??? hmmm.... how many times have YOU done that. I think that would be a sum total of NONE!

  • Listen, that was my dear friend who, unintentionally, used my account when he was, lets say expressing his opinion. You were simply making a fair statement, my friend is right, in SOME cases. Your criticism of the performance is just, but there is a level of respectably claiming your dislike for a piece and there is a point where you sound obnoxious. Especially in your reply. Which is understandable due to the remark left by my friend. You will not make it through life with atrocious criticism.

  • boredom gets the best of me sometimes.. I appreciate your message.

  • I know, right? Kelli O'Hara is godly.

  • my voice teacher wants me to learn this :x

  • I've seen three different versions of Clara, and Clarke's is my favorite. I saw this one PBS, and then a year later saw her in Chicago. Her voice was much improved and it was pretty much the most perfect performance I've seen.

  • Beautiful. This show is so difficult to sing, and she does a magnificent job!

  • I'll sound like a broken record, but although Kelli O'Hara may have been a better SINGER, Katie Clarke's acting is just so much more advanced than O'Hara's. Number one rule in musical theatre: acting is ALWAYS more important than singing. ALWAYS.

  • @PhantomDawg594 100% agreed. this performance is my favorite by far. Katie moves me to tears.

  • @PhantomDawg594 - Thank you for that comment. I am tired of seeing singers get parts over actors. It happens way too much, and without a doubt the actor is going to do it better. The audience will take more away from a well acted performance than a technically sound musical performance. I agree, acting is ALWAYS more important.

  • @PhantomDawg594 And how did you make up this rule? You can always tell someone how to read a line but you cannot give them the gift of voice. And why is it that so many of the greatest Broadway musical stars of all time are not such great actors?

  • @pudgeuncle bahahahahaa. please....a line reading does not equal great acting. ahem. patti lupone? angela lansbury? bernadette peters? shall i name more? a great singer that is ho hum at acting delivers a nice and pleasant performance. a good singer and amazing actor? brilliance. of course they have to have a great voice, but it's the connection to the song and understanding of how the music and lyrics serve the story telling that should be the main focus.

  • @jaiadore Oh I must defer to a response from a 21 year old who must know EVERYTHING about the theater. I have probably seen a Broadway show for almost every day you've been alive. And if you are suggesting that Patti LuPone is not a fine actress, then there is little to say. Musical theater is often less about acting and more about the actors stage presence and persona. And of course, this depends on the role but truthfully much of musical comedy is not like acting Hamlet.

  • @pudgeuncle uhhh dude i was citing patti and the other two as good actors....and i don't know EVERYTHING about the theater. but i do know enough to have a fucking valid opinion about things. and stage presence and persona is of course vital, but all brilliant actors have that right? they transform into a character but breathe who their own essence into it. and musical comedy is a different style of theatre from shakespeare but it's theatre nonetheless...and should be treated as such

  • @PhantomDawg594 couldn't agree more. Take a look at Samantha Bark's interpretation of "On My Own."

  • @PhantomDawg594 I've been saying that all my life to people. It's nice to know that SOMEONE gets it :)

  • @PhantomDawg594 hmmmm...that is the excuse of all actors who can't sing. It's called MUSICAL theater for a reason! The music is equally as important as the acting. You don't go home from the theater reciting the dialogue. You go home singing the songs. It is not about just the beauty of the voice, this is true, but you still have to have a beautiful voice. In a musical, it's beautiful voices singing to great music coupled with great acting that put butts in the seats. they are equal.

  • kelli o'hara was a much better clara, i'm sorry

  • this is a very hard song, and, even though clark is good, unfortunately its not for her voice range :[ her acting is hard to top though.

  • Katie Rose Clarke is amazing! I'm going to meet her one day. My birthday is in 2 days. Please let me meet Kate Rose Clarke!!

    Shes an inspiration to me!

  • Is the Wicked tour coming to a theatre close to you? You could wait for her at the stage door ( :

  • actually, i did see them in may, but theyre long gone now:(

im planning to go see them again when they come to iowa in, i think, october.

but katie wont be in the cast...

    ill try meet donna though!

    i love them:)

  • My heart simply shatters every time I watch this. Or anything from this show.

You know, while this may not be the greatest musical ever, I definitely believe that it is quite possibly the most breathtakingly gorgeous to ever be presented on Broadway. I just can't even think of a show that makes me feel the way The Light in the Piazza does. It just captures that whimsical romance and overwhelming beauty like I've never seen.

    Aah! Brilliant.

I just adore this musical so very much.

  • This is just a stunning recording

  • i have it,

in the book the best broadway songs ever 4th edition

  • It is in a book called "The Singers Musical Theatre Anthology Soprano book volume 4". That is the only place I have found it.

  • we had a girl in our choir sing this song for a competition... it was amazing! she did a really fantastic job. i hope someone will put it on youtube.

  • Soooooooo Beautiful!

  • omg i know!!! i love it soooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much!

  • as far as I know, it's not sold separately..

  • I love Katie she was my Glinda in Wicked and I just love her =)

  • Comment removed

  • do you have this in DVD? do you know were I can get it? I've been searching for years (since it aired for the first time on PBS).

  • Does anyone know what key this is in?

    thanks

  • This is in D major

  • Thank you!

  • Such a breathtakingly beautiful song. Brilliantly acted and nicely sung.

  • this is a beautiful performance, but i went to a theatre workshop which is where i first heard this song. personally i think the girl i watched did much better

  • Please upload the Beginning and Overture before the Statues and Stories Scene?

  • this is such a beautiful song <33333

i saw the musical on pbs and was blown away!!

  • I love how Katie brought I different take on Clara. Though the part of Clara didn't give her the chance to shine vocally, I definitely feel her Glinda is perfect for her and shows how much she has improved.

  • It's cool. I could only imagine how funny it would be if they were in the same production.

  • Celia Keenan-Bolger is the most famous of the three. She was nominated for a Tony for Spelling Bee and she's most likely doing "Ever After".

  • watching this now, having seen her both on broadway and on tour, she improved WORLDS from bway to tour. vocally and acting wise. her take on clara broke my heart on bway but i was a sobbing mess when i saw her in boston on tour. it was a beautiful performance. better than i could have imagined clara ever being. this is a tad inexperienced, but take my word for it. she improved a million times over.

  • but she is acting this way because her mind isn't developing. so you aren't making your point. but EITHER WAY! aside from arguing this useless topic with people i have never and will never meet or know: i still do like kelli better anyway!

  • Actually, chicago2 made a point. It was very excellent, too.

Although Clara has the mental capacity of a young girl, she isn't infantile. Clara has adult longing. If Clara is as childish as you say she is, then the end of the first act would be very different.

  • hey this for everyone SHE MADE ON THE SHOW AND YOU DIDN'T SHE MUST BE A HELL A LOT BETTER THEN OTHER PEOPLE. she has a different acting style then the other person. deal with the differnces. you are ruining the show with your arguement. if you don't like her don't watch her.

  • Even though your comment is directed to everyone, you shouldn't have replied to me, directly!

Read this comment I wrote (below):

"Although Clara has the mental capacity of a young girl, she isn't infantile. Clara has adult longing. If Clara is as childish as you say she is, then the end of the first act would be very different. "

Did I ever criticize the actress? NO. I only discussed the character.

  • i like kelli too but, playing devils-advocate, i have to mention that clara is supposed to be childish. thats the point. she is suffering mental problems from her past that keep her childish. yeah.

  • Have you seen her live? She really is amazing when she was on National Tour :) She got ten times better :)

  • i completely agree.

kelli o'hara is not even comparable to this girl.

  • Do you have the Opening before Victoria and Katie make their first appearance? Just the introduction and Overture.

  • yes i do

i'll see if i can put it up soon

  • Thank You so Much

  • AH!! You put the Live at Lincoln Center filming up! You are my HERO!!!!

  • Best acting was done by Katie, hands down. Every actress portraying Clara - Celia, Kelli, Elena - has been brilliant and unique in their own way, and each has sung the role beautifully. But i juts can't seem to be moved by anyone's acting quite as much as Katie's affects me.

  • agreed

  • I love Katie's acting a lot, too. I felt that Kelli had the full package, though. She was the only Clara who really convinced me that she was from that time period. That's just my opinion.

  • Katie did a great job, regardless.

  • It's actually supposed to be operatic. Guettel incorporated elements of opera into his score. Kelli O'Hara and Celia Keenan-Bolger sang the song the way it's supposed to be sung.

  • I don't really like her... I think she uses too many hand gestures that don't fit her character, and it really annoys me.. I prefer Kelly O'hara

  • the look she has after her mother slaps her sends the chills up my spine. there is so much emotion there

  • GAHHHH she gives me chills. absolutely incredible.

  • is she on the album recording?

  • No the album recording is Kelly O'Hara. I think Kelly has a stronger voice but Katie has so much emotion.

If you like Katie you can check her out in the musical Wicked. She plays Glinda. YouTube's got some videos of her in it ^_^

  • wow! this is the first time I have ever heard a song from this musical and it is so beautiful! She is such a great singer!

  • i would sing it but, from what i know, there aren't any instrumental tracks available.

    you mean to say, parenT.

  • that gave me chills! ahhhh that was so beautiful and heartbreaking! looking into her eyes just kills me on the inside. there's so much passion in her eyes!

  • It won't let me post the link, but if you type 'Light in the Piazza' into the search bar of Facebook, it is the one with the yellow backround, and it should be about the third one down. When you click on it, just check that the top post on the wall is a link, and you will know you have found the right one.

  • If you join it, and go down to the wall the top post on there is the link to watch the entire show.

  • she is an amazing singer!! its different to see her not being glinda but this just proves that she's amazing in whatever she does!! love it

  • I just saw Katie in Wicked, and I absolutely loveeeee her! She's amazing in both shows! And she's super sweet and nice, I met her at the stage door twice.

  • God, this is the weirdest show to me - cause my name is Kate Clarke and I live in Texas and I do musical theatre...XD It's so weird!!!

  • I looooooove this song.

It sets up the difference between youth/innocence and her mothers jaded view on love.

In clara's simplistic way; She doesn't see the history or the statues. She feels/sees the sun and the simple things.

It's such a beautiful metaphor for the different views on love. Clara is more visceral/simple, while her mother overthinks and sees complications.

Gorgeous song from a gorgeous show.

  • i agree!

  • If you have a Facebook accout, then join the Light in the Piazza group because someone posted a working link for the whole show on the group page.

  • This song is my light

  • in the piazza?

    that was corny.

    i apologize.

  • Its all good.

  • hey, i havent seen this before, does anyone knwo the order of the songs??

  • Hi! I'm glad you found this musical. If you want to watch them in order, I made a playlist on my page. Check it out!

  • I thought it meant that Clara has finally found something she truly wants (love) and it's so close, if only her mother would learn to let her go. I think. :)

anyway who wants to add go ahead!

plus, you should totally watch it!!! just type the show into google videos and it should be one of the links there!

  • I have to admit I think I like Keli O'Hara a big better but Katie was still really really good.

  • we're singing this song in my school chorus

  • Absolutely love it!

  • i'm more drawn to the acting, though. and her childish voice i think suits the character very well. i do agree, though, that Adam Guettel probably meant this part to have an operatic voice...
