  • I found this video while looking for a Mick Karn piece. How disappointing to find another untalented sound-scribe blasting over such a talented musician. Why is it that the guitarists who play with Mick Karn have this desire to play such discordant rubbish? I would much prefer to listen to Mick Karn on his own than suffer the rubbish that drowns out his subtle and deft finger-work. RIP a bass genius.

  • one cool and kickass clip. thanks so much for posting this. so glad I saw JBK in london back in '97. musicians don't come much better x

  • Mick Karn. The reason I chose bass. RIP Brother

  • Thank God for You Tube, Mick lives on!

  • R.I.P:

    . Mick Karn :-(

  • I couldn't of been as modest as Mick was here, I would've at least walked downstage a bit and moved a bit. Then, after the show I would've told the guitarist to be less of a douche bag on stage, otherwise, I'm out.

  • Thanks Sugizo, nice to see somebody's picking up on the Adrian Belew tradition ...

Thanks Mick for being a genius - you'll be missed.

  • 1:42 Sons of Pioneers, wheeeeeey.

  • Could anyone tell me where this is from? A DVD or anything?

Also, to the people saying they don't understand why these guys are playing together: Sugizo considered Mick as his best friend and idol. These guys were all buddies. They are jamming and having fun there. If you don't like it, at least don't take that from them and enjoy it for what it is. I'm glad I got to know about Mick through Sugizo, because I wasn't from the generation who grew up with Japan.

  • R.I.P sweet gentle mick. i will miss you. and will love you forever.

  • Ugly way to play guitar!

  • RIP Mick....

  • Just found out the bad news. Damn!

Hope you`re in a better place buddy. Peace be with you.

  • What an amazing combination. Who knows what magic these two might have conjured in the future if Mick had not been taken away. Thanks for sharing this with us. The Bass King at his best. We'll see you in our dreams, dear Mick. Love you always xx

  • rip mick karns......

  • Indeed Mick was one of the greatest, I saw Japan's last concert in Europe at Hammersmith- AWESOME. RIP great man and strength to your family and friends........

  • RIP Mick. He will be sorely missed. what a friggin feel. This man could play to anything and make it sound like gold.

  • annoying guitarist ??? WTF?!

He is Sugizo man...if you don't know him just go check it out!

  • There is a fucking great hole now Mick has been taken...nobody sounds like him

  • Mick you were one of the best of the best R.I.P. my dear

  • Karn

  • R.I.P

  • RIP, Mick. No one else has played and will play the bass like you.

  • Oh man! This is so good, what a rapport!

  • r.i.p Mick

  • RIP MICK.

  • RIP MIck, but that stupid comment about the annoying guitarist? Do yer homework mate. Sugizo is one of the best guitarists ever and to see these two greats jamming on stage is a privelage!

  • @iceonaboy ......sorry about the annoying guiarist quote! not a sugzio fan, more a john mcgeoch man myself! check him out.... shame about mick, a true bass legend

  • @bimbler62 No bother mate, so sorry about Mick, as you say a legend, but youi should listen to what Sugizo has done solo or with Luna Sea, ok, its in foreign, but its awesome . I will check out John McGeoch reet now, cheers!

  • So sad to read that Mick has died. What a magical musician he was. . .

  • God Bless you Mick; R.I.P.

  • there is only one mick karn, and only ever will be,totally unique!.

  • hope you feel better soon mick. happy birthday (the 24 july) . have some cake for me will you. love you much .

  • that wal sounds very heavy, rich & thick .

  • People don't get SUGIZO because they don't understand one thing; he's no Slash, Malmsteen, Steve Vai or Eric Johnson... He's in a league of his own.

  • this guy is a musical genius.....

  • Wish my jams where this cool - wow.

  • Wow! Genius. Is anybody else hearing 'Oil on Canvas' in there?

  • PLEASE DONATE TO THE MICK KARN CANCER FUND

  • to tell the truth i rather hear a rapper on this instead of the guitarist. his style just didnt really go with the Dj's and funky bass.

  • holy hell that guitarist sure does abuse the high pitches of the guitar

  • Mick is fighting cancer and needs our help! Please go to mickkarn.net for more info.

  • Very good 'time document'. Fusion is in da house. Incredible Karn improvises 'sons of pioneers'. Like it.

  • 嗚呼〜超かっこいい!! ミックはもちろん皆さんso cool!!!!

    "Sons of pioneers"好きだ〜〜〜。

  • Imagine Karn and Fripp from King Crimson. there are connections. David Sylvian from Japan worked with Fripp. David Barbari from Japan joined Porcupine Tree that have links to King Crimson. Music is one family.

  • This is the guitarist's (Sugizo's) gig. He's got Mick Karn as a special guest because Mick is one of his favorite musicians

  • anyone who knows is it offically launched any DVD or something?

  • i call dj krush "the man"

    hes my dog!!!!!!!!!!!

  • An interesting twist on "Sons of pioneers"...I like!

  • This just makes me happier than julia allison in a room full of mirrors.

  • Of course: WAL Bass ... what else?

  • Japan & Mick Karn came of age in a time when guitar oriented nusic was in decline. This is why.

  • How did the guitarist get that gig?

  • @theflatearth He probably just asked Mick. Mick's cool like that.

  • 1:52 before we see Mick! WTF!

  • Yeah, this is my old buddy Mick Karn, playing loads of Sons of Pioneers Sylvian/Japan sounds!

  • my god thats sugizo !!

  • Why show a very ordinary guitar player?

  • ummm, is that bassist playing a Wal bass...

    ummm, yeah he is...

the bass is good but it doesnt go with this music whatsoever, in the least bit... at all...

  • What other bass could sound like that???? And you obviously don't understand a groove! He's jamming a Japan bass line... brilliant :-)

  • I wasn't saying the bass is bad..

it just doesnt do with the guitar and programers stuff

  • No worries... we'll just have to agree to disagree...if you knew the Japan tune you'd get it that they are jamming around Mick Karn so it's THEM that are wrong not Mick! No hard feelings and best wishes :-)

  • The cameraman should get his camera from out of his arse and stop drooling over the annoying guitarist and concentrate on the excellent bass work....

  • @bimbler62 Agreed! Sons of Pioneers deep within!

  • @bimbler62 cameraman made a good job because its sugizos gig not mick karns gig (he was a special guest so...) but rest in peace, legendary mick karn, your name and music will live forever.

  • @prznt What a great job as a guest! They should have done more together.

  • @Steviec63 yup they should have...if not only this tragedy, sugizo could have made a duo album with Mick Karn, but...=/ you know what did happen.

  • Mick Karn's THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!

  • I see too much guitar, ignorant cameraman does not realize that what Karn is doing is a lot more interesting than what the guitarman is doing.

  • Sugizo = Guitarist... One of the Greatest guitarists of all time

Mick Karn = One of the greatest bassists of all time..

    So.. its all good :]

  • Yeah, these guys are really powerful together: never saw this before.

  • annoying guitar

  • The great...no, the GREATEST...Mick Karn ladies and gentlemen. I live for the day Mick and David Bowie finally decide to team up.

  • I'd rather see MK and King Crimson team up!

  • That would definitely be interesting!

I'd love to see what he and Steve Hackett could come up with.

  • @MozzerRocks Unlikely since Mick is pretty ill. Please got to his appeal at mickkarn.net and donate and / or leave words of encouragement. Tx

  • ThankS for this video!!!!

  • He's fuckin brilliant, I wish I bought Dream of Reasons Produce Monsters, but I was skint as a student

  • Mick Karn was my idol when I was 15-16y old and still is in top 10 bass players in the world, the most original that is for sure

  • this is very very very great jam

    happy that saw it

  • Don't fight, people - there's room for both Mick Karn and JJ Burnell (Those groups were my 2 faves, it's the bassist that make it for me). Mind you, you should also take a listen to ACR ( A Certain Ratio), he wasn't too bad either...

  • Err make that Sons of Pioneers

  • Ok, I've checked this out a few times, and discarded it for heroic shwanking (despite being a big Mick Karn)... then just now realized circa 1:30 this is a funked up version of Visions of Pioneers. Kudos. Mick Karn.

  • Dont know whit yer fuckin whingeing aboot...the two compliment each other..

  • Jean Jaques Burnel man...stabs ye in the guts wae the bass guitar...

  • loved japan/karn since 1980 this guy is not only the most original bass player but also the best bass player ive ever heard ....awsome.

  • Sometimes I feel like I've been here forever.

This is awesome enough to make up for a bad day at work.

  • Mick karn is God

  • Karn and Sugizo.

    Simply GREAT!!

  • i love micks style, it has an indelible mark on my own learning process to bass.

  • amazing scratch play

  • who is the idiot playing the 6 string 'tenor bass guitar' with metal bars to help him learn the notes? He is spoiling Mick Karn's genius with his stupid waffling!!!

  • No DJ KRUSH's play

  • SUGIZO, the person who is the actual performer for this concert. He invited Mick to come jam with him since he is a big fan of JAPAN and considers Mick one of the best bass players in the world.

Now shut up and let it be.

  • >>considers Mick one of the best bass players in the world.

    by my account he is.

  • he makes playing a fretless look as easy as riding a fooking bike!

  • it is for some of us...esier than fretted I find it.

  • woah!

  • can anyone tell my what year this was i am back listening to M K after years in the wilderness

  • '97 if I'm not mistaken.

  • ooh. sugizo of luna sea there? :O

And That was some really nice bass playing!

  • Yeah it is Sugizo. I was like, "I recognize that type of playing on that guitar anywhere."

Sugizo has said numerous times that he's a big fan of Japan and Mick.

  • Ah ha! Look at the credits at the begining!

  • this track smokes... I'm going to dig out my fretless and get wild.

  • Masami - wow! What is this from?

  • Oh man, Karn is the whole reason I play bass

  • I love how they snuck "Sons Of Pioneers" into the mix.

  • This was an Abstract Day live featuring also Masami Tsuchiya, JBK and many others. It was really great, if you get it on dvd somehow (though I didn't know it was released) let me know! :)

  • Absolutely wonderful video. Thanks for posting it!

  • as cool as you like. the original track by japan was wonderful and this version brings it bang up to date and really kicks ass!! would like to get a copy on dvd one day. thanks for posting
