Constructive Criticism: This video talks about people with pride, who have an inability to consider that they might be wrong... do the Orthodox ever consider that THEY might be wrong? About anything? This defines "hypocrisy". I support the Orthodox but they can't define "ecumenism" according to their own understanding and blame its "failure" on close-minded participants when they themselves are (at times) very close-minded.
Matt, you must consider that many members (a very high percentage) of the Orthodox Church are converts from other faith traditions. Even the staff of GOCTV is made of former Papists, Protestants, and Jews. We say this only to illustrate that we are not an insular, or isolated little fringe group that is "close-minded."
We define 'Ecumenism' as the belief that there is more then one Church, or the idea that the Orthodox Church is not the only container wherein all the Truth is contained. -GOCTV
@GreekOrthodoxTV You call protestants by their name but you wont do the same for Catholics? Catholics dont automatically call you schismatic so maybe you could return the common courtesy. Having converts does not imply open-mindedness. Showing respect, recognizing similar truths elsewhere, willing to sit down and listen to other's story is open-mindedness. Avoiding ecumenical meetings and making little videos where you compliment your Church and insult others is close-minded by definition.
We consider ourselves to be the Catholic Church. We call the Vatican based tradition Papists or Latins for clarity. And we have sat down, we have listened, and we have been to many meetings. And indeed we are called schismatics. But we love our brethren despite being persecuted by them.
In future posts please address specific points made in the program & cite the timecode where the point you are addressing is made.
@GreekOrthodoxTV Catholics dont consider the Orthodox to be 100% "orthodox" yet they call them that name. Neither do they refer to the Orthodox as "Greeks" or "Conciliarists" (despite the lack of an Ecumenical Council in 1,000 years). Believe me, if you call Catholics "Catholic" everyone will know who you're referring too, therefore false names arent needed for "clarity". Call them "Roman Catholics" if you must, though inaccurate its better than Papists/Latins.
@mattporcelli, We prefer being called by the name Catholic, as that is how we see ourselves, and that is the ancient name of the Church we are members of. If we do not make claim to our name by using it, we will lose claim to it entirely. And, it is indeed quite often that the Latins refer us 'the Greek church.'
Mr. Porcelli, please, let's address specifics in the program. When you do, we will be glad to discuss your concerns. (Please refer to the timecode in the program.)
