@RogueRiley If you are talking about the maiko featured in the video (not sure haven't trailed back through the comments yet so apologies if not =]) I'm almost sure it is Mameshino not Mamechika.
@DevilShroom The reason why I mentioned Mamechika was because she wore the exact same kimono when she was a maiko. I can't really tell from the video, but I remember that kimono anywhere. ^_~ Though I also know from my own visit to a tea house that kimono are also sometimes recycled and newer maiko sometimes wear kimono worn by previous maiko.
This must have been a treat to experience! Whenever I feel a bit low, anything geisha uplifts me so. I am female. I was a paid "arts person" for years in NYC and Paris, could be considered a courtesan but no sex was demanded. I feel sorry I can never visit Japan and they are in such trouble. I had years of training as a girl and wore a bow obi in the back my parents gave me. I supported them well on my earnings and earned great acclaim. I am retired now in Paris, France. Uprated.
Cool! She did indeed become a full-fledge geisha (or geiko in the Kansai dialect) I saw her in 2010 at Yasaka Shrine where she and others did a dance.
@xShadowxPhoenix It's about preserving a culture. Not just dancing in a beautiful kimono or going to parties- Watch or read Memoirs Of a Geisha and maybe you'll understand.
@LittleWolfGirl545 Um no you don't compare real geisha culture by that bull shit novel by that piece of shit arthur golden, it was a novel not a real story. Try a book by liza dalby, leslie downer or mineko iwasaki herself
Hi everyone! I haven't been on this video in forever. @NeightmareGoddess I really don't know anything about geisha or maiko/geiko, so I'd be the wrong one to answer this question. I just know the interpretor told us she was to become a geisha soon. That's why I titled it geisha dance

@NANAchan743 If you actually read SunaoTsuji's comment, you'll realize that's exactly what he/she said. >_> Maiko - Girl that is YOUNGER THAN 18 and DECIDES TO BECOME A GEISHA. In other words. @NeightmareGoddess Well a maiko and a geiko will have 2 lines. 3 lines are for special occasions (graduation from one step to the other, minarai-maiko-geiko.) and for award ceremonies that they attend to. The girl who made the most money get awards for their hard work at New Years. And they also wear 3 lines for going to the various tea house in august to say thank you, and wish for assistance in the future.
@NeightmareGoddess They're called sanbonashi. They are an allure tool. Kinda hinting to the skin underneath. Japanese are great with subtley! Also you can see that her collar is of mainly white, and her hairstyle is no longer wareshinobu meaning she is later in her years as a maiko.
@KENDALLSTRONG all I'm going to say it's that you're an ignorant racist. It's pointless to try and educate people like you, but I'll try. GEISHAS. ARE. NOT. PROSTITUTES! They've never been. Do some research, it won't kill you.
She is very beautiful and talented .I can only imagine how much her life and work have changed over time sense time was taped . bless them all for keeping the traditions and arts alive and for sharing a glimpse into there world.
@erasermcfleafly actually in the Japanese culture, covering your body was considered beautiful. Leaving what is under to the imagination. It is very crude of you to say something like that about a beautiful cultural dance, just because you don't understand it. Plus, I am guessing she is demonstrating the story that is being sung with her movements, like hula. So if it is boring to you, it is just because you do not understand. Jeez. Rude people

first thanks for the video its really pretty. but this is not a geiko this is a maiko, the most obvious signs are that her obi is really long and she has red showing on her collar (you can see it when she turns around). also just in case your question wasnt anwered hachiban08 in Kyoto geisha are called geiko in tokyo they are called geisha. also kyoto is the only place where training geisha are called maiko. so yeah hoped that helped

my sister is really good dancing this coz our mother taught her how to dance..i really like watching her dancing..now she taught me how to dance and i really enjoy it so much...when i turn 18 i want to be a geisha..im 15 now so practising and dancing w/ my onee-chan is so enjoyable
I keep hearing this EXACT song sung in many of the Maiko/Geiko dances. And it is the same one....I played two side by side even to make sure! Is this a partiularly common/traditional song/dance? If so what is it called?
@WillyyyV thats kind of cool that men take the female role..i didnt know that.. but i was wondering if there were traditional dances in japan FOR men. like not dressed up at women but actual men.
@omgitschaeji I think there are, as there are male roles in Kabuki plays as well. Alot of traditional dance I think are based off of kabuki dances. There are a lot of songs that are similar. One great dancer is Tamasaburo (there are videos here on youtube if you search it up.) But other than that, there is a guy in my dancing group, and he dances male dances.
geisha are called geiko in kyoto and there are many fifferances between them for example the darari obi worn by a maiko is only worn in kyoto and not tokyo
Definately, this particular song talks of Gion, one of the 5 Geiko/Maiko districts of Kyoto. For example, at 00:41, you can see the Maiko gesture the sleeve of her furisode (type of kimono they wear), one of the iconic symbols of Maiko; they also gesture the obi (the long sash you can see at the back) along with many other things, it's a beautiful song if you get a chance to look at the translated lyrics ~
@28880 no, not backwards, but once in its life; Kyoto house the imperial palace. and now Tokyo does. Kyo is added to a cities name that had an imperial palace. Though it is not the rule as Nara was once a palace location as well.
@Hachiban08 not to be rude but just askin' but would the japanese appect african-american geishas cause i would like to become one or regardless of race and i'm african-american girl
@KaramelLolaBunnie91 I think they possibly could accept them, I have heard of American geisha before. Also, just to put it out there, some might be into racial stereotypes and thus not accept something out of social norm, but you do see that everywhere. I'm also african-american.
@Hachiban08 There are no American geisha. Liz Dalby didn't actually become a geisha, they just let her fulfill the functions of one for the purpose of writing her book.
@Hachiban08 In Tokyo they're called geisha, while in kyoto you call them geiko. Also maiko only exist in kyoto, they're apprentice geiko. I think in tokyo there's something similar as maiko, but they are called hangyoku (half jewel).
@SunaoTsuji oh right didnt even realise age was a factor, thank you for clearing that up for me..so how would you know which was maiko or geiko just by looking at a geisha, alot of people have commented about the difference in hairstyles or obi's etc but one persons comment contradicts another which doesnt help!
Geiko are more experienced at their art than Maiko so they don't need as many kanzashi (hair ornaments) and such extravegant kimono to look pretty - their art does it for them. Maiko have a dangaling obi (darari obi) Geiko have a drum obi (taiko obi). Maiko have longer sleeves on thier kimono (or Hikizuri) and wear a Wareshinobu/Okufu hairstyle, the Maiko in this dance is a senior Maiko about to become a Geiko so she is wearing a Yakko shimada style. Geiko wear wigs. Maiko use their own hair.
That's not correct. A maiko is an apprentice geisha and is between 15-20 years old. A maiko becomes a geiko after 5 years of training, mostly at the age of 20 or 21.
@NANAchan743 i'm being more specific as to why a Geisha is called a Maiko or Geiko and the age difference between the two. you want to address a Maiko as a Maiko and a Geiko as a Geiko until they are officially inaugurated as a Geisha. then you can address her as a Geisha because she has been approved and acknowledged by the Geisha community. a Maiko and Geiko are still training to become a Geisha.
i'm new to this and i'm curious, whats the difference between a geisha and a maiko, i'm assuming from some of the previous comments that a geiko is the name of a geisha apprentice before they reach the status of a geisha but im not really 100% certain of the destinction between the other 2, would be greatful if someone could clarify for me :D
I'm sorry I am not able to get on and reply to comments as often, ever since I started uni, I've been so busy =\
Oh and if anyone has cool info about Geisha and whatnot, feel free to leave comments, I like to learn about them because there is so much I don't know. Do take care everyone!! :]
that was the other students, I only videotaped the dance. Because they said later we would be able to take pictures with her, so I don't know why they were taking pictures of the dance.
That girl is a maiko,a senior maiko.she wear yakko shimada, formal hairstyle for senior maiko.she wear a nice kanzashi which show is in august.Perhaps is 1st of August, when maiko and geiko wear formal make up,kimono and hairstyle.
Weird is that she wear a semiformal kimono with yakko shimada.
Fiona Graham, from Australia, is the first foreigner geisha in the history of Japan. Wiki it. She has a book or two about Geisha houses (I read only one). She did the impossible, seen the invisible. She fought the power and won hard.
Don't let people kill your dreams. ESPECIALLY when it's been proven possible. ^o^b
my friend had told me she was a geiko =\ I wasn't too sure what she was, but that she was going to become a geisha soon, at least that was what our translator told us she said, that's why I named the video Geisha dance
As far as I know it depends on where the dance is originally coming from. There are forms which have developed from the Noh-theater and some from Kabuki, but I'm not entirely sure.
awesome :D. im saving up money to go to kyoto .maby in 2 years. when i have the time . so ill definetly check out the geishas. they seem so dignified :D. me an my pal should hire a geisha and we should drink and have fun :D thanks so mutch for posting this :D I love japan. and its culture. WOOHOOO. just about 2 years to go (not so long really ) ;)
actually, i have tried it. do you know how long it took me to just understand the basic ways to make tea? i was there for a long time, and i still can tie an obi in a complex way. it may not look complicated to you, but these are very strict rituals.
i wish i could tie an obi:( i have my yukata my host family gave me but i can't tie an obi, I wish I knew how. I love tea! I did a tea ceremony and it was amazing. I wish I knew how to whisk better. *don't worry all, I blocked this jerk and am looking to remove anymore of his rude comments*
i went to school while i was there, and we all made our own yukatas(my sewing was terrible) and one day we went to a retired geisha's house and wore formal kimono's and had a tea ceremony. it was great.
whisking was so hard! and i couldn't get the walking into the room right, i always started on the wrong foot! lol
lol don't worry! I can't sew for beans lol All I can do is crochet XD I wanna try to recreate Fuu's yukata from Samurai Champloo though. for a cosplay :)
We had our tea ceremony at this really old teahouse..lol my friend overwhisked and well u know, tea went everywhere lol
I whisk weird lol. You're welcome :) yeah he was a jerk
you are an ass. everyone likes what they think is interesting. dont throw negative around just because u dont have care about this. it is hard because u look at the way they have to train these woman just to form a "simple" dance or to pour a cup of sake in these tight robes. lets see you try to do this with elegance or with pose. and this is a tradition. obvisously u dont know much about what a geisha really is, or does. so fuck u if u dont agree 2 wat im saying. i dont care
This is Maiko.

maiko ,geiko privately in tea house.
they never accept first visitor.,however wealty person he may be.
by the way,it costs some 400 dollars per hour to enjoy this kind of dance privately.

@KaramelLolaBunnie91 I think they possibly could accept them, I have heard of American geisha before. Also, just to put it out there, some might be into racial stereotypes and thus not accept something out of social norm, but you do see that everywhere. I'm also african-american.

@Hachiban08 oh kool thx send me a friend invite on youtube so i can add you on plz r u a boi or gurl
KaramelLolaBunnie91 8 months ago
@Hachiban08 There are no American geisha. Liz Dalby didn't actually become a geisha, they just let her fulfill the functions of one for the purpose of writing her book.

@Hachiban08 The ones from Kyoto are Geiko.
RememberTheMemory 1 year ago
@Hachiban08 In Tokyo they're called geisha, while in kyoto you call them geiko. Also maiko only exist in kyoto, they're apprentice geiko. I think in tokyo there's something similar as maiko, but they are called hangyoku (half jewel).
SilberRegen 11 months ago
@SilberRegen how cool! thanks for the info :]
Hachiban08 8 months ago
just so you know if the futer, thats no geisha, thast a maiko. ;)

@ rivergod151
A geiko is someone that is 18 years or older that decides to become a geisha.
A maiko is someone that is younger than 18 years old and decides to become a geisha.
SunaoTsuji 1 year ago 7
@SunaoTsuji oh right didnt even realise age was a factor, thank you for clearing that up for me..so how would you know which was maiko or geiko just by looking at a geisha, alot of people have commented about the difference in hairstyles or obi's etc but one persons comment contradicts another which doesnt help!
rivergod151 1 year ago
Geiko are more experienced at their art than Maiko so they don't need as many kanzashi (hair ornaments) and such extravegant kimono to look pretty - their art does it for them. Maiko have a dangaling obi (darari obi) Geiko have a drum obi (taiko obi). Maiko have longer sleeves on thier kimono (or Hikizuri) and wear a Wareshinobu/Okufu hairstyle, the Maiko in this dance is a senior Maiko about to become a Geiko so she is wearing a Yakko shimada style. Geiko wear wigs. Maiko use their own hair.
xxxkimododragonxxx 1 year ago
Thanks for the info! I never knew that :) How interesting.
Hachiban08 1 year ago
Geiko is the name for geisha in kyoto.
xelvislivesx 1 year ago
You start off as a Maiko at about 15, then after 4/5 years of training you become a Geiko.
xxxkimododragonxxx 1 year ago
@SunaoTsuji
That's not correct. A maiko is an apprentice geisha and is between 15-20 years old. A maiko becomes a geiko after 5 years of training, mostly at the age of 20 or 21.
Miez1989 1 year ago
@SunaoTsuji Maiko eventually will become Geiko when they come of age,
RaggedHarpy 1 year ago
@SunaoTsuji, that is incorrect. A miako has to go through a certain years of training before she becomes a geiko. The age does not matter.
WillyyyV 1 year ago
@SunaoTsuji gaeiko= full geisha. i think they have to be at least 18 in order to become a full geisha.
maiko= apprentice geisha (which is what this dancer is).
chrissyluvhorsey 1 year ago
@SunaoTsuji acctually a maiko is a girl woh is learning to be a geisha
NANAchan743 8 months ago
@NANAchan743 i'm being more specific as to why a Geisha is called a Maiko or Geiko and the age difference between the two. you want to address a Maiko as a Maiko and a Geiko as a Geiko until they are officially inaugurated as a Geisha. then you can address her as a Geisha because she has been approved and acknowledged by the Geisha community. a Maiko and Geiko are still training to become a Geisha.

ah sorry just scrolled down further..so the apprentices are called maiko...they become geiko when they graduate and become full-fledged geisha ?
rivergod151 1 year ago
i'm new to this and i'm curious, whats the difference between a geisha and a maiko, i'm assuming from some of the previous comments that a geiko is the name of a geisha apprentice before they reach the status of a geisha but im not really 100% certain of the destinction between the other 2, would be greatful if someone could clarify for me :D
rivergod151 1 year ago
I'm sorry I am not able to get on and reply to comments as often, ever since I started uni, I've been so busy =\
Oh and if anyone has cool info about Geisha and whatnot, feel free to leave comments, I like to learn about them because there is so much I don't know. Do take care everyone!! :]

poor girl, she kept getting camera flashes...that's really distracting...and pretty rude. they should have been respectful and enjoyed the dance :(
LovableKittySPL 2 years ago
that was the other students, I only videotaped the dance. Because they said later we would be able to take pictures with her, so I don't know why they were taking pictures of the dance.
Hachiban08 2 years ago
okay all you people who gave me a thumb down prove me wrong and show me proof of a real non-asian geisha and i will gladly apologize.
blackstarsky 2 years ago

can i ask what the difference is about the dancing styles from different districs are
like Gion Kobu and other districs from Kyoto?
contortionist104 2 years ago
As far as I know it depends on where the dance is originally coming from. There are forms which have developed from the Noh-theater and some from Kabuki, but I'm not entirely sure.

No this is certainly not Yukina aka Kikuyu. Kikuyu is not from Gion Kobu, and this Maiko dances Gion Kouta in Gion Kobu-Style.

actually, i have tried it. do you know how long it took me to just understand the basic ways to make tea? i was there for a long time, and i still can tie an obi in a complex way. it may not look complicated to you, but these are very strict rituals.
AlyTheTrickster 2 years ago
i wish i could tie an obi:( i have my yukata my host family gave me but i can't tie an obi, I wish I knew how. I love tea! I did a tea ceremony and it was amazing. I wish I knew how to whisk better. *don't worry all, I blocked this jerk and am looking to remove anymore of his rude comments*
Hachiban08 2 years ago
i went to school while i was there, and we all made our own yukatas(my sewing was terrible) and one day we went to a retired geisha's house and wore formal kimono's and had a tea ceremony. it was great.
whisking was so hard! and i couldn't get the walking into the room right, i always started on the wrong foot! lol
and thanks, he was a jerk
AlyTheTrickster 2 years ago
lol don't worry!
Hachiban08 2 years ago

you are an ass. everyone likes what they think is interesting. dont throw negative around just because u dont have care about this. it is hard because u look at the way they have to train these woman just to form a "simple" dance or to pour a cup of sake in these tight robes. lets see you try to do this with elegance or with pose. and this is a tradition. obvisously u dont know much about what a geisha really is, or does. so fuck u if u dont agree 2 wat im saying. i dont care
