  • I have to say I was quite impressed by this movie. The appearance of the characters in contrasting light and shadow made them look much more menacing.

  • James should review "Der Golem", the one from the 1920s, in the next monster madness season, it's such a great movie :)

  • I'm the the first to plus 1 this

  • omg i <3 the 2005 remake of this movie nd the 1920 one lol

  • @amj07121998 Me too! Even though its a very simple movie I just fell in love with it. I love the character Cesare as well.

  • i already miss halloween:(

  • LIVING DEAD GIRL!!!

  • Supposedly Gene Simmons has a copy of London After Midnight Its what he based his stage charachter the Demon after

  • Rob Zombie based his "Living Dead Girl" music video on this movie, didnt know that until just now, i recognized many scenes

  • That awkward moment when the two top comments usernames both start with LEGO.

  • First ever Monster Maddness! I'm watching them ALL, right up the the sequal-a-thon!! HAPPY HALLOWEEN

  • HORROR MOVIES? NOT ALL HORROR MOVIES HAVE MONSTERS SO WHY IS IT THAT YOU ARE SHOWING HORROR MOVIES ON MONSTER MADNESS?

  • Saw this for the first time a few years ago, it's hard as hell to get the copy as shown in youtube for some reason, but I own it as part of three horror collections. Overkill yeah, but a family still loves to shop for the black sheep member during the holidays.

  • any body see rob zombies vid for living dead girl if not watch and make the conection

  • Just thought I'd say, I impressed my film teacher by talking about this film, thanks James.

  • Might this film be where Tim Burton got his inspiration? Looks like it to me.

  • I think James should do the Alien Saga.

  • I never heard about this movie, but I will check it out!

Mr. James Rolfe, your the master of all horror films that you talked about and the horror villians believed you!

  • 4 more days bitches!!!!!!

  • Trivia tidbit - Cesare, the man under Caligari's control, was played by Conrad Veite, the inspiration for comic's greatest villain: The Joker.

  • OMG I'm so excited for this halloween!

  • i've seen something like this in the rob zombie music video "living dead girl"

  • I want James to review "IT" for MonsterMadness 2011

  • @Boredhaswon Oh no. Noooooo...

  • is this a tim burton styled movie?XD

  • James, these reviews are great, thanks so much for making them! I hope you make more this October :)

  • @ThePopCultureJunkie He's a film genius in general.

  • James i am in a history through film class this semester and thanks to your brilliant retrospective on Horror movies i think i may be getting an A, since these are movies we will be focusing on, thank you so much :]

    Thumbs up if you agree.

(No I am not a thumb hog.)

  • @LEGOSHALEpielol dont forget pet semetary!

  • @LEGOSHALEpielol Cloclwork Orange is not a horror film....

  • @EmperorCesar It kind of is. It is more of a horror film then gore fest films, like Cannibal Holocaust, and Saw.

  • @LEGOSHALEpielol There is absolutely nothing horror about CO. It fits the Sci-Fi genre a lot better.

  • @LEGOSHALEpielol He did the shining in a review of its own.

  • @edwardLRS Yes, I hadn't visited his website before I posted this comment. Excuse that.

  • @LEGOSHALEpielol i agree with jacobs ladder thing is we never see those effects of peoples heads shaking in fast motions that is the most frightening thing i have ever seen

  • @LEGOSHALEpielol A Clockwork Orange is a sci-fi.

  • @LEGOSHALEpielol He has not done a monster madness episode on The Shining but has reviewed it(it's not on monster madness cause he made a monster madness episode before it that same day). It's on his website. As for clockwork orange he hasn't reviewed it but I don't consider it a horror film. Yes there's a lot of violence and rape and although I haven't seen it im sure it could of been scary. But it's more of a drama cause apparently you end up siding with the killer.

  • @LEGOSHALEpielol he has the shining under reviews on this channel or jamesnintendonerds channel i am pretty sure.

  • @LEGOSHALEpielol He already did The Shining

  • @LEGOSHALEpielol The Haunting anyone?Or does that not count?

  • @LEGOSHALEpielol Don't forget They Live

  • 1:00 ceasare is doing the zombie walk!

  • do the wiker man this year (2011)

  • @NoMorePopMusic It can totally be considered a "sequel."

  • @chosentonessournotes yea but it cant just be one sequel. and as i said he reviewed both series

  • @LegoKing345 Yeah, he is reviewing sequels.

It's a Nightmare on Elm Street AND Friday The 13th sequel!

  • @LegoKing345 He just might... It's a sequel-a-thon!

  • @LegoKing345 He'll have to, as this weeks is he's reviewing the Nightmare on Elm Street series.

  • @LegoKing345 he did :D

  • @LegoKing345 he did :D

  • @LegoKing345 And he did!

  • @LegoKing345 he does....

  • @LegoKing345 your wish has come true

  • @LegoKing345 He did

  • @LegoKing345 HE HAS NOW WHOPEE!!!

  • @LegoKing345 He did

  • "Caligari" is probably the first example of German Impressionism. It has been said that every movie since has been influenced by it. Notice how Tim Burton's work is based in that style.

  • #1 Demographic for this video is 13-17 years old. Judging by the likes-to-dislikes ratio, I think there's hope for the future of humanity, to some degree.

  • You should do Day of the dead for 2011

  • dud i just got this movie so awesome i love the killings you know caser (conrad veidt) has also played the man who laughed 1928! awesome reveiew lol!

  • so the movie's basically like one huge acid trip?

  • 0:28 Nice Gloves. I see Disney helped you get them.

  • Comment removed

  • Looks like Tim Burton went back in time and decided to make the first horror movie.

  • hey chinemasscare how you do this i mean witth the scenes and stuff cos i want to do this too

  • Lol the setting in this movie feels like something out of a Tim Burton animation

  • dream world? i dont know what kind of dreams ur having, but to me that looks like a acid trip

  • @maplestorywater Certainly not the pokemon dream world

  • If you like old silent horror movies you might want to check out Volkodlak on my channel.

  • Shut the fuck up, bringitnow.

  • monster madness is now monster shit and these reviews is becoming shit by day.

  • Did you get this footage from the German Horror Classics DVD.

  • Just a helpful point: Cesare is pronounced "Che-za-ray".

  • Definitely looks like Tim Burton from like 100 years ago.

  • that was violently short

  • I just realised that Tim Burton aint that original.

  • @hyperswivel fun fact. tim burton was gonna do a remake in the early 90's but project fell through

  • Dude could you picture watching that movie on acid? My first comment on YouTube ever EPIC!!!!!

  • Dude could you picture watching that movie on acid?

  • is he coming up with another monster madness this year?

  • @MrRamirez787 Yeah, Its called Cinemassacres Monster Madness 4: Camp Cult

  • @MrRamirez787 It's on his website.

  • @ThePsychoReturns cool thanks

  • @MrRamirez787 Yeah he is, google cinemassacre and you'll find his website.

  • @xbirthxbyxsleepx cool thanks

  • I love this movie. I actually got my daughters to watch it with me and i figured i'd show them the classics. I stay away from the more violent horror films and the kids love the old ones like Dracula and Frankenstein.

  • Doesn anybody know if James will be doing another Halloween countdown this year?

  • @TenderTrap86 Yes. He's doing another Monster Madness starting October 1st.

  • @icecsm16 Tanks a lot for the response. Can't wait.

  • @TenderTrap86 No problem. Me neither!

  • @icecsm16

and hes gonna talk about shit movies this year which should be good lol

  • no it released in germany in 1919

  • These movies you covered are so awesome! Thank you so much for covering all the classic black and white/silent films. Thanks to this review I have discovered The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and created a movie pitch for my cinema class based upon it. Thanks again.

  • This is really a surreal film. Watching it made me think that either I'm watching a person's dream or in an entirely different reality. But that's what gives this movie its knack for being unusual and different. The word 'surreal' definitely best describes this movie and nothing else.

  • This series is absolutely excellent...thank you cinemassacre!

  • can believe the first monster madness was three years ago now, seems like 3 months

  • I love this movie

  • @omarornelas95 Nope. The first was a 3-minute French film called "Le Manoir du diable" (The House of the Devil) in 1896

  • living dead girl rob zombie inspiration

  • There's an interesting musical re-score of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari on the NeoKitsch website!

  • It was 1919 not 1920.

  • @TWAWorld

No it was first released in Germany in 1920, and USA in 1921, check IMDB

  • @iiAFX Then I guess the book lied to me.

  • when are you gonna review the omen and fright night.

  • You should review some Mario Bava fliks.

  • I've seen so many great horror movies, and I never would have if it weren't for Monster Madness.

  • 0:12 looks like gman from half life

  • @omarornelas95 nope, i think the first one, is Frankenstein (1910) from edison something company, it has a lenght of 12 minutes, it's awesome

  • James if u wouldnt mind me asking but could you review Silent Night Deadly Night,Christmas Evil,Willard,SAW,My Bloody Valentine,Jack Frost (!996 Horror film) ,Carrie and Nightmare on Elm Street remake for this coming Monster Madness we would all love that later

  • 36 people are douchbags 1 is blind

  • @omarornelas95 No, not the first. Maybe the first good one lol

  • that magician sure got some gloves like mickey mouse!

  • he should review IT puppet master and jack frost

  • for this years monster madness 2010 will u review stephen kings sliver bullet

  • Another great silent horror film from 1920 is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Check it out.

  • @TenderTrap86 After playing the video game, I don't think he wants to watch it XD.

  • I saw this as part of my college course. and it is a amazing film. The big debate about the film, which is interesting, I feel, is the question, when does the film 'actually' begin, and when does it 'actually' end. I mean, he wakes up, yes, but does he really, and is his alleged delusion actually a delusion, or is it the Doctor's delusion.

It's a film that makes us ask questions, which is remarkable that so much importance is placed on the viewer.

  • it reminds me of Rob Zombie's "living dead girl" music video

  • @fullmoonfan13 I this movie actually inspired Zombie to do use the same scenes.

  • This movies crazy. You gotta imagine, after people watching stupid clowns in black and white and Charle Chaplin, people must of been "what the hell just happened to my brain"

  • whats up with... everything

  • Saw this last night. Such a surreal, crazy film. I love it.

  • Have you ever seen Ed Wood? U might like it

  • @smarterthanmyclass if u watch the ed woodathon on his other channel he reviews ed wood movie and gives it 5 stars

  • We did a play for "One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest" at my high school and I got cast as a chronic that wanders aimlessly. I modeled some of the movements after the Universal Monsters like Frankenstein's Monster or Kharis in the mummy sequels as well as these German expression films like this and Nosferatu. I was always mimiking that style at 1:24 xD. I always felt that the 10's-80's were the best age for movies and hororr. Such surrealism and atmosphere. Love these movies.

  • @balrog13571 Makes you feel like things today is shit, right?

  • Kind of. I've seen some good horrors in the 2000's, but mainly yeah it's all PG-13 and remake crap. Sometimes with the Dawn of the Dead remake, or 1408 and Poltergeist's PG-13 ratings it's not as bad. But you need a good story, non-generic scares, and atmosphere. While I can enjoy the old slasher films for example today filmakers seem to feel that if they just increase the nudity and blood it will make it better. It may draw your eye a bit more but it doesn't increase the film's quality however.

  • You forgot to say it has the first twist in horror movies.

  • @DeviL220307 Agreed.

  • Rob Zombie's music video for his song "Living Dead Girl" directly copies scenes from this movie. It's very cool, check it out.

  • no duh

  • @T3hMilkman OBIOUSLY rob zombie likes sci fi movies and OBIOUSLY he likes rock/metal music OBIOUSLY he is god :D

  • @icjburke It's not just sci fi. He's a big man for old movies, in one of his concerts he had a prop from an old movie, sometimes he uses quotes from old movies in his song (electric head is an example). Rob zombie is an pretty cool guy, he likes old movies and dun afraid of anything.

  • @Fyrzon well he does like halloween "witch is kinda new 1978 meh" your right

  • @icjburke What does 'obiously' mean?

  • I LOVE German Expressionism

  • I saw this in film studies class in high school, given its age, its still pretty creepy. But you have to accept it for what it is to appreciate it.

  • I fucking love this monster madness :D, Godzillathon and Monster Madness 3 are cool but this just kicks ass, Plus for some readon the videos buffer real good which is always good.

  • this movie is incredible. there were a handful of insanely imaginative films in early film. metropolis is another awesome example of that rare kind of imagination.

  • where can i see it???

  • the full movie is on YouTube. it should be the first one that comes up once you search.

  • Tim Burton said he was inspired by "German Expression" movies a lot similar to this one.

  • yupp. you can even see some resemblance between edward scissorhands and the sleepwalker in the cabinet of dr. caligari.

  • its JamesNintendoNerd, the best game and movie rewiever ever was!!!!!!

  • Who is this guy doing the reviewing, the one talking?

  • hi cinemassacre here's something you didn't know the first horror film " the devil's castle" was by georges melies in 1896 and the first frankenstein film in 1910.

  • hey

gregorkrause u noob he said one of the first

  • One of my favorite silent films, this one really is great and a must watch for anybody who wants to see how the elements from horror develop

  • considering the movies land scape id guess this inspired tim burtons style

  • @legomanh

'Inspired' is a mild way of putting it, he pretty much rips it off entirely.

  • i think rob zombie based the music video of "Living Dead Girl" off this movie . correct me if im wrong

  • Hehehe, so in this movie was based the living dead girl video xD

  • wow never saw it but looks awesome

  • Loved this movie i've seen almost every one of these horror movies [well the ones before 1953] you have reviewed over the years other then that one Frankenstein

  • That film was really good! I liked the ending.

It really seems ahead of its time

  • this is 10 years after frankinstain (1910)

  • WTF???? FRANKINSTEIN(from edison studios) WAS FROM 1910?!

  • hes doing monster madness3 now but i cant find the second series of monster madness, can anyone help?

  • james reviewed the godzilla movies

  • Thanks :P

  • Monster Madness 2 is the Godzilla-thon. It's great, especially if you are a fan of the big G.

  • Thanks :)

  • Its Godzillathon, and it might be in James other account.

  • the 2nd monster madness series is called "Godzillathon" not hard to find XD.

  • 100 Rads on the 100 Point Radical Rating System! Great!

-Great Job Cinnemasacre! I've seen all of these Monster Madnesses before but it's October once again, so I hope to look at them all again.

-This one DOES look like cool beans. I'll have to see if I can find it anywhere.

-Also, looking forwards to the NEW Monster Madness.

-Some folks here mentioned Tim Burton. Maybe Nightmare Before Christmas will be featured in your next batch!

  • Wow,this film looks like you in broadway or in play theater show.

  • wow, a movie from 1920 sets a kind of "standard" for so much other films... the setting looked like a kind of "Alice im Wunderland"

so now we know that the most movie m
