@byrnz35 I understand what you said there, but they already race at Texas since 1997, and there haven't been accidents like this in all those years.. Also the new high banked Homestead.... There never have been incidents like this at that 1,5 mile oval. But it might be that Texas and Homestead have less grip, then Vegas. Because at Texas you can run two lines and at Homestead as well, but here you could run a lot. That's the reason everyone was all over the place during the 15 car pile-up here.
I am actually very surprised that this video is up! And this race was on my birthday too...And Dan was one of the guys I followed closely since he had come into the league.
It's bullshit, so because of one fatal accident IndyCar should stop racing on ovals? That's hypocrite! Racing is dangerous, especially oval racing. It must be great to drive around such a fast oval and it's great to watch. It's dangerous, but if it was too dangerous we would've had fatalities on them every year. If you don't like oval racing you better watch the merry go round in F1.:/
@kukkelf1 Its not so much that they should stop racing at ovals, its that they should stop racing at banked ovals like this. With no real need for brakes on ovals for the indycars, it means that these light weight cars can go full throttle. This makes the risk for wrecks like that jump up by a lot. Flat ovals like the way vegas and homestead used to be are more for the best and least dangerous in Indycar.
they was trying to make it like a nascar type race the ones you see at talladega and daytona. the problem was speeds was too high, too many cars and my opnion they need more room if they wanted to do a pack style of racing. they should at gone to michagan like they did in the past.and final for pack raciing with indycar is not a good idea because they don"t have noses or fenders so this was a stupid idea for the indycar series.rip dan wheldon
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasnt some of the racers conserned about the size of the pack (racing field if you dont know what I mean) on the track in combaination with close quaters of the track........?
Stupid track. It was irresponsible to let them racing there. Those spectators are just bunch of idiots. Their reactions are just stupid. I don't understand Franchitti's reactions either. Yes, he's just won a title, but smiling like an idiot when a driver died just a moment ago?
@cortkatanakx1q Dude, calm down. He cried for many minutes when he found out. A friend of mine was at the race, and everybody was scared and silent. Many screamed in agony when they saw the wreck.
@cortkatanakx1q UMAD? ur clearly a moron lol since you are so smart and such a good fan you should make a video telling us exactly how to react this is the more disrespectful than anything the fans could have done at the track i hope your not a real race fan b.c we dont need people like you at tracks, have a nice day :)
@24jeffgordan88JRfan I watch many series except ovals but I watched two nascar races and indy at tracks the last year. I'm not a moron. You are younger then me, so shut up! I was pissed off when I was writting that and I'm not going to say nothing more about it. It was still hard when I watched gold coast 600 v8 supercars a week ago and Bourdais almost cried.
@cortkatanakx1q im younger so i need to shut up? umm okay, rather strange but ok V8 super cars are fucking amazing and i saw that to and mark porters crash :( RIP anywho moral of the story in stead of criticizing ovals show respect for dan
@CycloneGU: I think at the 2001 Daytona 500, when Dale Earnhardt Sr. died, after his accident, I think FOX aired a commercial with him... Not sure though...
@CycloneGU No, that's #12-Will Power (Verizon Special). Power was injured in the crash and missed the V8 Supercar race he was scheduled to participate. Tony Kannan also withdrew. Helio Castroneves, Ryan Briscoe, and Alex Tagliani did participate, and Tagliani will defend the Indy 500 title in May in the Herta #98, which is a Lotus.
This had to go up sooner or later - and I have been wanting to see all of the surrounding hubbub between the crash and the announcement of Wheldon's passing. I've seen bits and pieces so far, just found this video and am watching now.
this is the first time I have seen the full race coverage as I had interviewed Dan a few times for some british websites I wrote for. I spoke to him a week before he won the Indy 500 in May this year. We chatted about many things and we ended our conversation by him inviting me to go karting with him next time I was in USA. Such a sad, sad day that even now, watching the 5 lap tribute with the sound of Amazing Grace playing in the back ground, still I struggle to keep it together. RIP Daniel
I'm a little surprised about the coments made from the TV broadcasters. They mentioned all sorts of injuries and deaths. They even went as far back as the 1920's but nobody mentioned Alex Zanardi's accident!! He lost both legs due to a racing accident..... It was not in training, or at a practice but during a race...
Whenever you see a tarp on top of a car... it's never a good sign.

At 44:33 - is that Wheldon in the Verizon commercial? What an irony that he'd just died and his commercial was airing.

The fact that he was the in race reporter is saddening. He speaks on national television just minutes before he is dead.

When Briscoe/Tag rub wheels at 17:00 the race immediately becomes more uncomfortable to watch. I remember feeling that when watching it live.
