this game was honestly the best time i had playing a castlevania game next to the first one, symphony of the night.. hmm and mby castlevania 3.. the cd quality music gets my heart pumping and once i got used to the back flip to dodge it was on. i liked opening the secrets and the gameplay kept me happy. i think i spent 80$ dollers on the game so to me its a favorite for my collection.
not only you know how to make a review of a great game and include so much memories but you sing the ending adding my favorite music. I never heard of knew somebody who has a turbo 16 back then and thanks to your work i discover a lot. Keep the good work.
@Pacethemace9 Hmm, I can't say really. My series revolves around reviewing the original releases of the games (from the standpoint of the time-period in which they were released). You know? I don't purchase the Wii versions so I don't know. But, I've never heard anything about it being different.
Lets see. this game has overall poor graphics. Poor sound effects. very overbearing annoying music, even though their theme songs. Lets see, incredibly hard to the point were its not even enjoyable. it's not a masterpiece like castlevania 4 or symphony of the night.
@Pacethemace9 Hey, it's cool. There is nothing worse than buying a game you hear great things about and then end up hating it. You know? I obviously wholeheartedly disagree with everything you said (though I like C4 and love SOTN). But, I respect your opinion and thank you for sharing your thoughts. Have a great weekend.
This game sucks. Its shit!!! Dont waste your money!! Castlevania rebirth os shit too. Bought them both on wii. Wasted 20 bucks. castlevania 4 and symphony of the night are the best...
Man I'm such a NOOB!! When I first played SOTN, I was lost in Richter's intro. I was like "Who the F is that little girl?!(Even after playing Dracula X for the SNES)" After playing the original version, NOW I'm going "So that's what happened!!!"
This game looks better than the snes version. Its just as awesome as Symphony of the Night, with superb graphics & soundtrack. Definitely gonna find this game for my PSP. Cheers for this excellent review.
Thanks for this great review. Rondo of Bllod is one of greatest video games all time. The gameplay was superb, the graphics (think about the cutscenes!) were really crisp and the soundtrack is still today simply AWESOME! Symphony of the Night couldn't exist without Rondo of Blood.
Awesome review Chris! This is actually the game that motivated me to by a PC Engine Duo before the game finally got re-released on PSP and Wii. I would love to play this again sometime. Unfortunately I'm going to invest on a new Duo since my old one broke 2 years back...
One of the best Reviews I EVER seen. And I saw a lot of good reviews. You did an awesome prastentatio of Rondo of blood.
Sadly I cought up late with Castlevania... Symphony on the Night on PSX was "my first" that catched me. Since then I play "downwards" until Castlevania on the NES. I really wonder, why I didn't play Castlevania 1 when it was released... never heared of it when I was a kind in the 8 bit days.
Wow. Fantastic review. It got me excited to play the game which is rare as I'm not a massive Castlevania fan at all. I will hunt down the PSP version immediately.
Your reviews are great! Thanks! I love the Castlevania series and am going to for sure download this title to my Wii soon! So many great games I have overlooked over the years......
Let me restructure that list and add in the criminally underrated Castevania Bloodlines/NG. Also, I'm taking SOTN off because it's so different: R>CB=C3=SC4. Say what you will about CB, but it had good levels, -some- more advanced directional combat capabilities; item crashes; multiple characters; and -you can jump on and off of staircases!- (which only RB does otherwise). I also realize that CB generally has smaller sprites than SC4.. but the art work is so good.
"I'm rather glad the multi-directional whipping got dropped in Rondo, since Richter's already too overpowered with his ability to item crash. I'm also glad the item crash doesn't exist in CV4, since Simon's already too overpowered with his ability to whip eight ways. Both games are very well balanced IMO. I really can't pick a clear winner from SOTN, Rondo, CV4, and CV3."
I can generally agree with all of this. For me: SOTN>R>CV3>CV4, but they're all great games. I just think CV4 is overrated
Nice Video. I was wondering is it worth getting the PC engine DUO-R. I have found one on auction that is about 55 dollars so far. What do you think, he is the listing. Has had a new laser put in.
challenging games suck. they make playing video games a chore. this game is very much playable casually and the music is incredible. just wish it had come to the US so the text and dialogue could be in english! i played the snes version. it is alright but not as good as what i saw in this video. i love that it has elements from cv1 2 3 and castlevania adventure
I've been looking forward to you reviewing this one since I first found TurboViews! I actually enjoyed the SNES game back in the day, but not nearly as much as this when I finally played THIS. (I will say that I kind of prefer the SNES sound chip.)
Oh god, I HAVE to know: HOW did you finally get this game back then, when you were young AND living in an era when imports couldn't just be eBayed? What was the solution you finally arrived at? Did you find some kind of specialty shop or something?
I remember maria's alter ego attack. it was awesome and very damaging, but also very difficult to perform. you almost needed luck to get the thing to work. :P
I honestly have no idea why so many gamers prefer SCIV to Rondo of Blood. IMO, it's really no context. DX has more secrets, a second character, better stage designs, better bosses, better audio, and better artwork. SCIV has bigger sprites (which, IMO, are ugly.. but whatever) and 8-way whipping.. which is really, really, really overrated. 8-way whipping is fine, but there's no reason to expect that it's automatically better as a result.
@killias2 Exactly. All the people I know who love Castlevania 4 usually praise it for being the easiest game in the series. A bunch of babies if you ask me!
I'm rather glad the multi-directional whipping got dropped in Rondo, since Richter's already too overpowered with his ability to item crash. I'm also glad the item crash doesn't exist in CV4, since Simon's already too overpowered with his ability to whip eight ways. Both games are very well balanced IMO. Upload the VHS or have it as an extra on the next Turbo Views DVD. I missed out on the other girls in my first play through. I thought Maria was the only person you had to save.
Shame this game was not released outside Japan at the time because the Turbo wasn't very successful here. I'm sure it would have made the system a contender again the SNES/Genesis. But we finally got it on the PSP so it's all good now.
Great review ! I would love to have it. Unfortunatley not a massive pc engine vibe over here in the UK and their was a pal turbo grafx released but no games !! how does that work !?
@AFIDD21 The turbografx was not released in the uk or europe, only japan and usa, it was going to be released here in the early 90,s, but poor usa sales, etc, stopped that from happening.
@AFIDD21 It was only a test market release with pack in games only (random pack in game at that). The stuff selling on (PAL TGs) are left over/unsold stock.
This is by far my favorite castlevanias for sure. when I found out about it years ago I knew I had to have it. it is expensive for sure though. I picked it up for $200 and it holds its value even now. great review man.
I have waited so patiently for this review and when I got home from work and saw this, I was stoked. Awesome review!!! I own this for the Wii Virtual Console and the Sony PSP. I am going to purchase a Turbo Duo, Super System Card and search around for this game. I won't do that until December. That will be my gift to myself. Thanks for doing this review Chris.
@craigmatik cause theres no PC engine support on those consoles? I dunno, I own a wii and I have this game :D. I'd say emulate it bro its not like Konami is making any money when you buy some used game.
What an awesome review Chris, and I love that you did a "Teenage Turbo Views" all those years back, on VHS no less!! Do you think..you...might...upload...a ..litlle..OK forget I asked LOL!! WOnderful reviewing as always and a very cool game - my only slight issue with the series is my tendency to get lost and give up. Please tell me a dumbass like me can make it through the levels on this and I'll definitely pick it up!
@80sMTV Fortunately the CD games aren't region locked so as long as you have the proper version Super System card for the game you want to play, you can play it. The TurboChips/HuCards were region locked and required a converter or a mod to play them.
@80sMTV There are one or two that won't work properly.. Altered Beast CD requires a japanese 1.0 card. The Arcade CD games require a Japanese Arcade card to work.
You have finally done it. T-T One of my favorite Castlevania games has been finally reviewed and I thank you for remembering it! It was a very well done review.
Great review!! I never knew about Rondo of Blood until I played Symphony of the Night, and I wondered what the story was before it. Then my boyfriend got a Duo with a bunch of imported games Rondo of blood was one of them. I was really excited when I got to play that game and it is indeed an incredible game all together.
I remember seeing this in EGM years ago and thinking it looked cool but it blew me away when I finally got the chance to play it years later. Still one of my all-time favorite games ever. Plus, Cross A Fear is perhaps the best Castlevania tune ever.
Fantastic game! Definitely one of the best Castlevania games. This game is way ahead of this time and still to this day, I still play it and get the sanctification that a lot of games that don't give nowadays. Thanks for posting.!
The reason I bought a Turbo Duo. It's such a brilliant game with an incredible atmosphere and awesome visuals. I like CV4 a bit more, but Rondo is easily my second favourite Castlevania title.
An excellent review... I really enjoyed it. Thanks!
Absolutely one of the greatest games ever made. I can't count the hours I've spent playing it. It's one of the few games that's truly deserving of 5-stars. Simply perfection!
The Castlevania games must have been a pain to beat for you, am I right, Chris? I mean, it's Konami! If it's not challenging to the point where you're throwing your controller, it's not Konami.
When I got the psp version that was the first time that I had ever player either Rondo of Blood or Symphony of the Night. Hearing so many good things about SotN I played through that game first once I unlocked it, but I must say that not only did I enjoy RoB a lot more but it is also one of my favorite games ever.
The old school system is so great in this game that I wish they took a break from the metroidvania system for a while and tried to do something like RoB again.
This game is great, I probably should pick up a real copy some day even though I generally don't buy imports (gotta draw the line somewhere). But luckily the TG-CD is not only lacking region locks, it also doesn't have copyright protection 0:)
At last Castlevania. I knew you would finally make a review of it. You're among those few who have PC-engine so there was no doubt you'd get it and review it.
And moreover...this review reminded me much of castlevania episodes from AVGN.
You Castlevania freaks xD Or shall I say "we"? Because I ended Order of Eccesia recently... hm...
@MrTechnoSqueek The annoying thing is, i bought a psp go to get the castlevania games on it mainly right. Im absolutely serious about 1 year ago. But psn in my country dosent have it. I can get it on umd sure but the psp go dosent play umds. Its almost funny. Hmm so its on the wii. That is my last option then. Hope i can get it in Sweden. Its so damn idiotic that psn isnt one international site. Its so stupid. Why if i can buy the umd cant i buy it on psn when i know it is in american psn?
You did it, you finally reviewed THE Turbo Duo game. As a Castlevania fanatic, this was the whole reason I purchased a Turbo Duo. I had a TG16 when I was younger but bought a brand new Turbo Duo off a godly vendor which no longer exists (TURBO ZONE DIRECT) and Rondo off ebay for a handsome sum. I, like many others, request that VHS footage to be uploaded. Your geekiness is very endearing. Now, since it is all downhill from here, start with an avalanche...SHAPE SHIFTER!
Great review as always. Though I'd have to say Dracula X on the SNES gets a bit too much criticism. I'll admit it doesn't live up to its' PC Engine counterpart, but it's still a great game and worthy of the Castlevania name.
I didn't hear it mentioned in the video, but this game is also available on the Wii's Virtual Console for dirt cheap. Add to the fact it's component progressive scan and can be saved at any point and you've got the best version of the game to date.
Excellent review, Chris! This game looks so good, I may have to get it on the Virtual Console! This video's so great, I'm gonna link it to my Symphony of the Night review with an annotation during the Rondo of Blood part! Good job!
At last someone honest enough to give this game a perfect score! I think most reviewers hold their true feelings and give this game (along with many other masterpieces) less than a perfect score, due to their sense of obligation to avoid giving games perfect ratings. Thank you for being an honest reviewer.
Excellent review! I was in the same boat as you when this game 1st came out.
Through a little luck I was able to find it new at a game store in the next city over. But it was a major drive. Castlevania Dracula X was my 1st PC-Engine Import and I played the heck out that thing. I've got hours upon hours into it. Thanks to the Tennokoe Bank card, I still have my completed game saves. Still one the best games in my collection. Thanks again for the awesome reviews.
Great video! I am happy you finally reviewed Rondo of Blood, it is one of my all time favorite games.
However, I have one question... What Castlevania would you consider to be the hardest?
It can't be any of the Metroidvania games, they are all pretty easy. Simons Quest wasn't hard, it was just tedious. 4 was probably the easiest classic Castlevania game... Thing is, I don't think of the first Castlevania or Dracula's Curse as being nearly as hard as the Rondo of Blood using Richter...
I enjoyed the SNES version as a child. I always felt that it was weaker than the other games, but I still liked it. However, when I finally played Rondo of Blood I was blown away by how much better it was than the SNES version. Also, I doubt that they were intending to make it in the vein of CV3 as it doesn't have any of the more interesting aspects of that game.
On a side note I just thought of a game in the series that was harder than Rondo of Blood. Castlevania Bloodlines!
I meant Rondo is in the CV3 vein (multiple selectable characters, branching levels, etc), while the SNES DracX plays more like the standard CV1 (more linear levels and only one selectable character). Two different games sharing similar plot lines, basically. SOTN IMO is a successful retry to fuse RPG elements, after the failed attempt known as CV2.
Rondo to this day is still the best in the series, if anything it plays like a tribute game while still keeping its difficulty fairly balanced. It's what I like to call a classic challenge to those who are fans of CastleVania.
Great stuff as always, Bucci! I never noticed your vids aren't in HD, before. You should try and render them in HD, just for us who always watch their stuff in HD. ^_^
Ohya, I was heartbroken when I heard this game wasn't coming out over here back then. It's such an incredible action/adventure that just begs to be played. Great review dude!
Hey i want to watch the Dracula Xcellent tape! can you upload it maybe? You've been making video game review shows since high school no wonder you are good at it.
I got this from WiiWare, damn it's hard, just like in the good old days :D only when you play this you realize how modern games degrade your gaming abilities.
I have this on psp with the sotn easter egg full game, it's hard as balls...I enjoy it, but I really struggle with it even in the earlier stages. The PC Engine version looks like it was awesome and well worth having.
That's a bit creepy when the riverman says that when the girl steps on the boat ("At last, something good...").
This game looks REALLY good. I never was that into Castlevania, except (of all games) Castlevania II on the NES. And yes, I'm serious, I really do love that game. But this one looks awesome.
Wow Chris, excellent review! I'm humbled by your 100% on DX; I've never been able to fully do it myself, though I've finished the game over a dozen times. Thanks to DX, Maria is my favorite playable character from any Castlevania game! (Well, besides Eric from Bloodlines)
Wonderful review, i don`t understand why Konami didn`t released it outside Japan, it might really help to sale more TG-16 :( Game is really great, i have it on PSP
I don't have an official copy, but when I bought my PC-Engine Duo, the guy who sold it to me unexpectedly put a handful of games on CD-R in the box with it. I'm a huge fan of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which is a direct sequel to this, and I was extremely pleased to have a chance to play it.
this game was honestly the best time i had playing a castlevania game next to the first one, symphony of the night.. hmm and mby castlevania 3.. the cd quality music gets my heart pumping and once i got used to the back flip to dodge it was on. i liked opening the secrets and the gameplay kept me happy. i think i spent 80$ dollers on the game so to me its a favorite for my collection.

This is by far my favorite castlevanias for sure. when I found out about it years ago I knew I had to have it. it is expensive for sure though. I picked it up for $200 and it holds its value even now. great review man.
lukemorse1 3 months ago
Very very true, this is one hell of a great game for the PC-Engine. You described it very well and I thought this review did justice to it.
Though i'll be honest, my favorite PC-Engine Konami game is Gradius II: Gofer No Yabou :P

Thanks for doing this review Chris.

craigmatik 3 months ago
@craigmatik cause theres no PC engine support on those consoles? I dunno, I own a wii and I have this game :D. I'd say emulate it bro its not like Konami is making any money when you buy some used game.
AntichristDemoncore 3 months ago
@craigmatik might have been because Nintendo has the rights to distribute now. I'm not sure but after all it is a Konami game.

Does The U.S. CD Upgrade Card Also Plays Japanese CD Imports?
80sMTV 3 months ago
@80sMTV Fortunately the CD games aren't region locked so as long as you have the proper version Super System card for the game you want to play, you can play it. The TurboChips/HuCards were region locked and required a converter or a mod to play them.
tribalmunky 3 months ago
@80sMTV There are one or two that won't work properly.. Altered Beast CD requires a japanese 1.0 card. The Arcade CD games require a Japanese Arcade card to work.

Because I ended Order of Eccesia recently... hm...

I would pay $100 for a brand new HD 2D Castlevania that played like Rondo or Super Castlevania IV, not like a Metroidvania.

Now, since it is all downhill from here, start with an avalanche...SHAPE SHIFTER!
rookstepes 3 months ago
Great review as always. Though I'd have to say Dracula X on the SNES gets a bit too much criticism. I'll admit it doesn't live up to its' PC Engine counterpart, but it's still a great game and worthy of the Castlevania name.
I didn't hear it mentioned in the video, but this game is also available on the Wii's Virtual Console for dirt cheap. Add to the fact it's component progressive scan and can be saved at any point and you've got the best version of the game to date.
jedahdoma 3 months ago
Excellent review, Chris! This game looks so good, I may have to get it on the Virtual Console! This video's so great, I'm gonna link it to my Symphony of the Night review with an annotation during the Rondo of Blood part! Good job!

At last someone honest enough to give this game a perfect score! I think most reviewers hold their true feelings and give this game (along with many other masterpieces) less than a perfect score, due to their sense of obligation to avoid giving games perfect ratings. Thank you for being an honest reviewer.

Hey Chris,
Excellent review!

Thing is, I don't think of the first Castlevania or Dracula's Curse as being nearly as hard as the Rondo of Blood using Richter...
spman2099 3 months ago
@spman2099
The hardest in the series would be the SNES ver. of Dracula X, which a lot of people crap on, like I used to.
However, I've come to have a better opinion of it over recent years.
Maybe Konami intended to make one in the vein of CVIII (PCE) and the other in the original CV vein (SNES).
bigolebadassbob 3 months ago
@bigolebadassbob
Castlevania Bloodlines!
spman2099 3 months ago
@spman2099
