I HATE HATE HATE that our closest relatives are found in Africa, where there is so much turmoil and where people can't respect each other, so how are we going to stop them from killing off this precious creatures? How? IMO, they are more precious than any one human, including myself. It's so sad and so frustrating.
Where was the mother from the little bonobo? Bonobo's and chimps have a strong bond with their infants, and can get devestated by seperation with their infants. So I was wondering, was the baby taken without the mother wanting it, or was she allowed to take care of the baby bonobo?
This reminds me of Coco and when they put her on display for the public only to find that she could sign the words people were shouting at her like banana and hello and answers to short questions. I believe she died too soon to explore her abilities.
@sixaremycharms Finally! Someone who agrees with me. I have having this discussion with an ape specialist the other night. Either the apes ask for the treats from the board and are givien it (to reinforce behaviour) or are given as a affirmation for doing a "trick" -
i dont see any more mental capacity then a dog that you train to do one thing to get food it just because of the keyboard and a larger brain that it can ask for more stuff untill it can really communicate using the keyboard asking questions they are amazing animals but dont exhibat any where near human llevel intelligence, th african grey paret has demonstrated the highest level of puzzlle solving
@TheKentuckykid9513 well with evolutionary theory you expect some animals to be more closely related to others. like an octopus is way more different from a human than a bonobo is. but if all life was designed then why would the designer make bonobos so close to us? why would he give them 98% of our DNA? and why would he make our chromosome 2, two ape chromosomes fused together? all of these things make no sense except when evolutionary theory comes into the picture.
I had no idea any animal other than humans were capable of such thinking. This will certainly stir some ethical debate over the treatment of these creatures.
As I understand it there are already people fighting for great apes to have human rights.
These apes seem to have the mental capacity of a child (this is a compliment, not an insult), should they be given the same rights as one?
@supertrinko the issue is people only have rights when they have resposibilities animals bear no responsibility to humans so people will keep killing and eating animals until animals stop killing and eating us or they can contribute to human society. well its just my opinion i don't really know but thats how i think it will play out.
@damierrumble Now that sounds like an entirely human biased argument.
Should an animal have to benefit us for us to treat them with respect? In this case, equal respect that we afford other humans.
Even though these apes are much more capable (mentally) than any animal I have seen before, they are still far less intelligent than us. But you're expecting the animals to stop killing us first?
But anyway, I was not speaking of all animals, just these apes, we don't eat ape.
Kanzi and Panbanisha are grossly overweight - which makes one wonder if they give treats when they do things right - or give them anything they want when asked for. That pink swelling you saw was an "anogenital swelling" chimps/bonobos get when in estrus. As the bonobo female gets older so does her monthly swelling, but I think this one is excessive b/c of weight. I have never seen a bigger swelling in my life in captivity or the wild. (swelling hits peak and then goes down)
actually bonobo's blow each other too. so i guess god is taking them to hell too for sodomy? and they couldn't live in certain parts of america when sodomy used to be illegal. haha fuck that shit, rock on bonobos keep on blowin

@supertrinko Most Animals do not kill People.
there's only a FEW animals that could be considered man eaters in any way.
Most of the time that people die to Animals is becaus they did something stupid and did not know enough about the Animal in question.
