An overly masculine look was not acceptable from male artist, even if you weren't gay. Plenty of artist from the 80's looked very feminine, because the music industry knew it would sell. It would never work now. An overly masculine look of today is what sells in the music industry.

Yeah, he has the girl look totally, but he's one of the very few who have been able to pull it off. The 80's fluffy, feminine style ruled completely. Singers such as Boy George, Wham, the list goes on. Maybe it's coming back and Justin Bieber is helping to exude feminine, flamboyant musical styles.
