i think is amazing people can handle the cabin pressure and dry air along with increased uv exposure and not be driven a little crazy. there is no doubt this job has high stress levels in different ways than most jobs. how many other jobs do you sit in a pressurized metal tube? the sun exposure definitely feels very strong on flights. my neck got really sun burnt once and i always take precauitons on flights now and cover up and wear sun cream. most people forget about the uv exposure

The job of a commercial pilot today is way harder than 40 years ago. Now days, with all the technology in the cockpit they have to go to flight school much longer. And the way in a Airline Cockpit is long and hard. Especially the payment for pilots is extremly low in the first few years. And aircrafts can't take off or land by themselves, so think before you speak

True. I really don't know in depth in that department. I was making an aggressive assumption, because I started to read all these negatives thing about the career. I still hold my opinion that entry level should be leveled a little higher, after all, the debt must be cringing after coming out of school.
nah they didnt pay or esle i would have done pilot course by now but a university in Queensland, Australia, 3yrs degree in Avaition and they will pay like $90,000 by government. So I will move there from Melbourne to Queensland just to enrol uni so they pay for my pilot course thats only way let the dream become true
Flying is more than just a career. It's an art.... so many different ways to fly a plane... each pilot put's his own twist on take off and landing especially. um im 23 years old, i just got my CDL's. now i want to fly, cause it seems fun and you feel like your on top of the world. The first plane i saw, was when i was 3 too. I was moving to America with my family. My Father told the pilot that i loved airplanes, and he let me take a picture in the cockpit, with his hat on (: Since then, i've always wanted to become an airpline pilot. The Dream Starts from an early age, and Develops into Reality as live goes on
I believe that becoming an instructor is the best way (right now), to wait out the economy. That way you fly for pretty much free, and let your students pay for your fight hours! After being an instructor for a few years, I am still debating whether to fly corporate hopefully a P-180; or possibly an airline flying international. It does cost quite a few dollars to get to the CFI rating; but since I am already here... I was definitely worth it!!!!
i think* (note think*) that the reason for pilots being underated now and being payed shit is because we aviation lovers will settle for anything. as long as we get into the skys, were good. despite the pay. and considering that aircraft basically fly themselfs now..we dont do as much as work as they did 40 years ago..thats just my opinion. i do love aviation, i will for ever. but to me its crushed and i have to think realistically. so now, it will just be a hobby..for ever :(
You know as well I do we don't do it for the money. Aviation is a bastard to get into and if you did it for money you lost more than what you will ever earn. I see your point though about the modernization. I still enjoy flying by pilotage too GPS can fubar but chart and compass never fail.
@nastypop well in reply to your *thought* you are correct partially. Commercial pilots do get paid peanuts for about the first 5-7 years while they get settled in their first officer positions. Later on in their careers they'll be gold as long as they join the pilot union in their respective airline. As far as your remark on aircraft flying themselves now, it just goes to show how much you know about aircraft, the aviation, and piloting. I speak of this from a career in air traffic control.
aviation is inherently dangerous...why would anyone love aviation? in a car if you have a problem, pull off the road, and you can drive at night. in aviation, you can CFIT, stall/spin/crash/burn, get icing on wings, get inflight breakup due to turbelence...there's so many ways to die in aviation, thanks to gravity...even a small collision in mid-air can kill you...
small mistakes are the difference between life and death in aviation...its like russian roulette. i remember this flight instructor who was given departure vectors at night VFR, so he just followed the vector without thinking about the ascend altitudes...he died.

Its too bad I dreamed of flying too. Loved airplanes all my life went to college spent $120,000 on an aviation degree and labored for the hours. Got hired. Terrible career. The airlines suck and now I wish I had never seen an airplane.
I am very sorry to hear that, but I spent much more than that since I did a JAA licence and it costs more in EUrope than in the US and had to buy my type rating. However, I would work for free and be very happy , its never terrible and everything is forgottten the second i set my foot in the cockpit and I takeoff, I would never imagine myself doing something else and if anything i regret the years i was not a pilot
I'm guessing you fly airlines like Republic, American Eagle, Comair, Trans States, Piedmont, Air Wisconsin?
They pay shit and give you terrible hours, but you just can't give up on it. And you really hated it, go into ATC. Not as bad hours and you get a slightly better pay at first, but after a while, you start pulling more money in.

hey,i want to go to flight school and i know a place where is pilot crisis..that means there are no pilots!but if i do my flight school and finish it in 3 years...do you know how can i do my flights to build hours?
well you have to strat flying for small charter or domestic airplanes now this could take up to about 2-5 years, the pay check may seem a bit less but hey all jobs start off liek that so no worries...another way you could build up your hours is by been a flight insttrcutor (you need yoru instrctor rating for that) OR another way is to join the MILTITARY :)
I just finished high school and I was going to pursue a degree in aviation to later become a pilot. But due to the economy of the airline industry today I'm looking at another degree as back up, just in case you know.

aviation is inherently dangerous...why would anyone love aviation? in a car if you have a problem, pull off the road, and you can drive at night. in aviation, you can CFIT, stall/spin/crash/burn, get icing on wings, get inflight breakup due to turbelence...there's so many ways to die in aviation, thanks to gravity...even a small collision in mid-air can kill you...

small mistakes are the difference between life and death in aviation...its like russian roulette. i remember this flight instructor who was given departure vectors at night VFR, so he just followed the vector without thinking about the ascend altitudes...he died.

Its too bad I dreamed of flying too. Loved airplanes all my life went to college spent $120,000 on an aviation degree and labored for the hours. Got hired. Terrible career. The airlines suck and now I wish I had never seen an airplane.

I am very sorry to hear that, but I spent much more than that since I did a JAA licence and it costs more in EUrope than in the US and had to buy my type rating. However, I would work for free and be very happy , its never terrible and everything is forgottten the second i set my foot in the cockpit and I takeoff, I would never imagine myself doing something else and if anything i regret the years i was not a pilot

I'm guessing you fly airlines like Republic, American Eagle, Comair, Trans States, Piedmont, Air Wisconsin?
They pay shit and give you terrible hours, but you just can't give up on it. And you really hated it, go into ATC. Not as bad hours and you get a slightly better pay at first, but after a while, you start pulling more money in.

Just beware it might not be all that rosy. If you enjoy sitting around looking at clouds for 6 hours straight then you'll love it.
The dream starts to wear off very thin very early on once you fly wide bodies.
The majority of pilots end up broke & disgruntled old drunks without a life as they've divorced every wife they've ever had. Anyhow good luck

well you have to strat flying for small charter or domestic airplanes now this could take up to about 2-5 years, the pay check may seem a bit less but hey all jobs start off liek that so no worries...another way you could build up your hours is by been a flight insttrcutor (you need yoru instrctor rating for that) OR another way is to join the MILTITARY :)

I just finished high school and I was going to pursue a degree in aviation to later become a pilot. But due to the economy of the airline industry today I'm looking at another degree as back up, just in case you know.

this will always be my dream. down the drain now. did a little research found out the industry sucks at the moment, looks like it isnt getting any better either. so its on to boring ole radiology to raise money to get my privates license and make it a hobby i guess..if i didnt have family and a girl that i want to marry someday..this would be for me, i would be flying right now. theres nothing worse than not being with the loved ones on holidays.
