I cannot believe it will be 10 years since Clifford's passing on Sunday 18th Dec....Still in my thoughts...and always will. Please keep the music alive.
This video shows Clifford T singing at the Castlebar Song Contest in the West of Ireland circa mid 1970's. Little did they know the treasure they were entertained by on that lovely night.
CTW was not singing in the Contest, he was there as the supporting entertainment.
The relevance of this song? - I really don't know to be honest but right now my emotions are very raw, I seem to be feeling so much that has been endured by others - this song I have heard many times, each time there are tears - just now - never have I been caught so off guard by such a beautiful song.
To all my dear friends that have ever or are still experiencing INTERNAL HOMPOPHOBIA - I love you, don't ever change what you are.
As David Hoyle often says to his audience 'I leave it with you'
I bought the album when it came out in 1973, I still have it and play it nearly every week , the songs are beautiful, his writing was amazing, Clifford T Ward, you are sorely missed.
A real contender for the greatest love song ever written, A genius who was sadly taken away from us years before his time. His legacy is destined to live on in the hearts and minds of all those who value poignant songs that linger long after they are played.
Clifford's music has been part of my life since I was 13 yrs old back in 1973....Happy to say his music is still very much a part of my everyday life and it will always be...To all Clifford T fans...Keep the music alive and when you can spread the word and post your favourites on facebook etc.
One of our (England)best ever song writers song players and song people. Cant imagine ANOTHER WITH ALL OF THESE THINGS. Great to listen to has we prepared eat and wash the dishes after our meal. Great loss but what he left us all is far better than so many do.
As a fellow MS sufferer this song always distroys me, too good for words long before we both knew of our plight this song was always one my favourites, God but is a funny life but it gos on and thanks for the memory
do i still occupy your mind . . think its the question we all ask of the other person , be they far away or gone forever, lovely song lovely words and he appears ot be a lovely guy , .
Thanks for the video, first time I have ever seen him 'live'. The quintessential English gent, brings back early childhood memories and his music always conjured up visions of what life was like in “Worcester” and England. Sad songs, brilliant melodies and composition not rivalled before or since.
I am richer for the memories he has given me but the World is poorer without him in it. And no the nightingales song will not live longer than your songs Clifford!
This song always gets to me - I have liked it ever since i was a boy - I used to borrow my dad's records to listen to it. Every so often I put it on again and it still moves me. Beautiful.
CTW = a man of peace, he was too good for this world, he has left us a fantastic legacy with his music, I shall never tire of listening to his beautiful music, often I play his music at night to send me fast asleep....
To all Clifford T fans, please keep Clifford in your thoughts on Sat 18th Dec, it will be his 9th Anniversary. He was a lovely person and filled my world with beautiful music as I'm sure he did for you.
Why do we have to get so very very low to appreciate people who are soooo very very high...love this song, with hindesight it's even more poignant(please scuse smellin)
My Dad just passed me one of his CD's, wow i've fallen in love with it already. I'm from Worcester near where he lived which he name checks a few times. Amazing
lovely song so beauiful is it just me but when l watch clifford l get really upset , he comes across as a lovely man he was a true genius and gentleman god bless him and all of his family his songs will live on for ever.
No it's not just you - I always play it when I'm feeling a bit melancholy and missing my friends and family in England - There's nothing wrong having a good cry!!
an absolute masterpiece, one of the most deeply heart rending love songs, the phrasing of his singing is quite masterful to as one realizes when you try to sing it yourself!!, the line re "knowing what Robert Browing must have felt" is like the mountain peak of the song and matches anything by Schubert (although Schubert wrote a lot of great tunes!!) all blessing to the late Clifford he made the world a better place
Incredible. Living in Denmark, and having Worcestershire as my 'home', gives it added meaning for me. There'll never be another like him, that's for sure.
Listen to this time and time again and it's the ultimate lovesong from someone separated by time or miles from their true love. God bless you Cliff. The best "Singer Songwriter" of our generation. Guess it's up to Susan Boyle or someone of the age bracket to revive all of your good work.
When I lived abroad, in Beirut in the early 70's, I sent these words to a girlrfriend back in England, albeit with slighlty amended lyrics. Very corny I know but even now, although the relationship was short-lived and very innocent, the song still has a powerful and emotional resonance - I was young then after all!
Why don't we hear more of CTW on the radio? I heard a part of this song on the radio once and it took me ages to find out what it was! Love it. A great songwriter taken too soon.
Wow! I think between viewing this clip, as well as one each for Gaye and Scullery-I feel like I've discovered another of the greatest unsung British talents of all time, who I'm guessing probably never crossed over here to the states. Being an anglophile at heart, The very 'Englishness' of his work is the selling point. I would also have to guess by half of these comments, that this artist is no longer with us. Must find out more about him! Clifford T. Ward RULES!
Watching him sing this live just shows he was so natural... something very rare these days, a singer who just sings. Am sure that he is in heaven captivating his audiences just like he did this one... R.I.P and say "Hi" to my Dad who passed away in August
Sublime. His voice. His composition. His language. Just wish he had received the recognition of his genius. R.I.P. Clifford. Miss you. Miss your songs that taught me so much.
You are so right - but isn't it comforting to know he's the best kept secret Britain has produced - although I'm pleased Sir Terry Wogan promoted him whenever possible.
A quality songwriter with a real talent for the use of language. Sorely missed. If anyone can post "Time, the magician" from the Home Thoughts album it would be much appreciated
Brilliant songwriter and singer. This type of stuff seems to let down the people who create it. Nick Drake may be in the same category in this respect.
A great Song as all his songs are I have been a fan of his for many years its great to see him performing live he used to drive round our road were we lived many years ago is music lives on .
so humble its unreal, a real voice forever, i will make sure my kids at least grow up with really good music on the school run, it might not be cool by the time they are 8 ish, but they will get a good grounding and there is nothing like variety, clifford respect , the man is so good, r.i.p. top man
i knew CTW when we were young musicians many years ago a really lovely man, great songwriter, i hope the young musicians of tomorrow always get to hear his work, and take inspiration from it.
I know that he suffered from chronic stage fright, but all his live performances should be shown over and over to contestants of the X Factor so they could see what the X factor really is, this song, for example, is everything in one package, immaculate production, meaningful sentiment in the words and the composer putting so much emotion in to his performance.... they have a lot to learn RIP CTW we remember you and are better for having your music to turn to.

yeah but love can feel like that, with the cheese factor, but don't forget the context in which the song came, times have changed now. outstanding imo, and that last line :o
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I've got a lot of time for CTW, and I particularly love "Gaye", but I cannot understand why this song has succeeded in capturing people's affections the way it has. In the same way that a singer as remarkable as Sinatra will sadly be remembered primarily for tosh such as "My Way" and "Strangers In the Night", it's unfortunate that Clifford will be remembered for something as maudlin and as annoyingly twee as this.
Your right. It's appeal is the sentimental lyrics. The tune/melody itself is not very good. I remember when it first came out and thought it ameteurish, then during those dark years in my life I found solace in this song and thinking back,it was mainly the lyrics. That said,it's an okay song. And okay ain't to bad.
It's a wonderful song... I am italian and of course I have difficult to understand all words... there is someone who says me where I can find the text? Thanks. I find Clifford T. Word on You Tube and it was a wonderful, I have lots of memories with her song Gaye.
i was driving along in belfast heard this and had forgotten this masterpiece took me 3 days to find it imagine being the girl this was written for ........... xx
This song never fails to move me, both in mind and spirit.I discovered Clifford T Ward's amazing voice and priceless talent for writing lyrics that actually meant something, back in the mid 70's, when cassettes were the in thing! He wrote from his heart, not from his hand and preferred privacy, his wife and family to worldwide fame, now THATS what I call true love. Amazing lyricist whose work will live on forever, but surely the most undiscovered singer/songwriter of the century.

That said,it's an okay song. And okay ain't to bad.
