Hi there... No, it does not NEED a pot. In fact, no mic NEEDS a pot. A pot is only added if you want a volume control on the mic itself--it's purely an extra feature. If you end up making a maglite mic, you'll see that there is really no room to put any kind of pot. You could use an inline volume control jack if you wanted though...

Nice! I also made it myself, used a bycycle Head light, and a telephone element (Old telephone with ''round dial thing'') Works and looks nice =)
