My mom has told me stories about this invasion and what she experienced.... and in this, they make no mention of the Grenadian citizens (not speaking of the military) that actually passed away during all of this. They made it seem very cut and dry... enemy fires, so we fire back and save the students! I'm not sure how much of this I really believe.. I guess because it's only the American stand point. I am speaking as a Grenadian and a US Soldier this had nothing to do with harm coming to students. It was about Cuba and Grenada becoming close and the US wanting to prevent it in case Grenada chose to be communist as well. If the US wanted to protect students they would have invade earlier than when they chjose to do so instead they did not find it necessary until Cuba assisted with the creation of a international airport in Grenada.

This had nothing to do w/wanting to harm the students. It had to do w/ the Soviets and the Cubans wanting to use them as pawns to make the Americans do their bidding. They didnt want the US to stop the communist overthrow of the country or the 10,000 foot Soviet airstrip that was being built to eventually bring in nuclear missiles as well as arms to support insurgents in Central America. So to accomplish this w/ out US involvement they decided to not allow the students to leave the island.

President Reagan gave them several chances to avoid invasion simply by letting US choppers come in and take the students out of the war torn country. That request was denied more than once; the Cubans and Soviets felt if they gave up the students they would lose their leverage over the Americans, so we went in and took them out by force. President Reagan wasnt Jimmy Carter, he wasnt gonna just sit by and let US citizens be taken hostage again like they were in Iran just 3 years earlier.

@ajr666 Actually, Carter attempted to rescue the hostages and it ended in failure. The negotiations that led to their release was practically complete by the time Reagan took office. While you are correct about Grenada, you are a little off mark with Carter and Iran. Sure, he wasn't a strong president but, it was not as if nothing was attempted.

The US invaded the country because it had the possibility to pose numerous threats. The students were in no more danger than anybody else on the island,it was a nation wide curfew which is why there were not any soldiers stationed at the university until the invasion. The island is approx 100 miles away from US oil pipelines and has numerous relations with Cuba. Grenda is also a british rule colony so the US broke numerous international laws invading the island all under the name of "security".

U must be very young, otherwise u would remember President Reagan going on National TV multiple times to inform the Grenada Rebels that if they agreed to let US choppers land and evacuate all of the students the US would not invade the island. This request was denied not once, but 3 separate times. 2nd Grenada is NOT ruled by the British. They gained their independence in 1974. Like Australia its considered a Common Wealth Realm which means it is a SOVERIGN country.

The fact it was condemned doesn't change anything. Many of the countries who supported it were in the region so they should have more of a say.
