Japan doesn't need an army or navy to be a huge benefit for the west.
Ports for ship repair, troop preparation and early warning systems makes them a wonderful ally in the region.
Not to mention all of the air bases America can use there.
And just so you know, Japan does in fact have a small army, air force and navy.
Matter of fact in 2003 Japan bought 26 F15's from the USA.
