  • she needs to make a video of fiddling w/ balloons

  • I read the comment as "She's actually pretty wow" not "She's actually pretty, wow." They are both somewhat weird and awkward to say but one is somewhat demeaning and the other is kind of funny. I like the funny.

  • She needs to get on TED

  • Too many comments to read through here in case it has been asked before, but is there a video with the Q&A session at the end?

  • Lol your scarf looks like you just tore it off a windows curtain.

  • New Orleans? Where do you live then? Louisiana FTW

  • Before I began listening, I knew nothing about hyperbolic planes, and even though this was a lecture designed for math folk entirely familiar with them, you still ended up explaining to me what they are. Well done! And don't worry, I'll check out what I thought I just learned; no blind asumptions!

  • wait wait wait, with the bead thingy, i play around with my (spherical) magnets a lot, and i noticed that once i started tiling with 'tiles' that are heptagons and bigger '-gons' it sort of curved outwards more and more (with hexagons flat and pentagons and smaller '-gons' curving in). are the heptagon and bigger -gons hyperbolic planes?

  • @khajiit92 i mean, i start with 4, 5, 6, 7 etc. magnets in a square/pentagon/ etc, and add a layer of magnets to make it bigger and bigger, and the the hexagons were flat, pentagons and smaller were cone-ish and 7 and up were kind of like the dried fruit pics on your vid. just wondering if that makes them hyperbolic planes (or if there are other conditions or whatever). i think tiling was the wrong word.

  • The "Umm"s are very distracting. But once the camera showed just how big the crowd was.... It all made sense. Either way.... Good job! :D

  • Anne Hathaway!? lol jk It sucks how lots of comments are like, "Wow she's actually pretty... blah blah blah." I'm just going to say that... DUH!!! She's a total math art nerd geek that can break it down into absolutely beautiful and comprehensive (not to mention entertaining) visuals for those with simple minds! I thought she was beautiful and absolutely stunning when I first encountered her artistic representation of Fibonacci! (I love Phi.) But let's get back on track because I digress. lol

  • if you realize, she has a light lisp

  • I don't want to sound like some shallow prick but I am glad she is pretty.

  • wow pretty and smart, so doing anything Saturday

  • You seemed so uncomfortable

  • All those people are too busy throwing triangle parties and choreographing binary hand dances to be paying attention.

  • "Balloons are essentially lines, right?" - That line *epitomises* mathematicians. xD

  • you remind me so much of anne hathaway! wow! you are really pretty! :D

  • @Daisy94125 sooo true, im with u on that one cuz i was gonna say that too

  • WOW she sound really professional... first if you read this when people fucking say ummmm they sound like they dont know what there talking about ex. teacher asks student (what is the gravitational pull of the moon) (student replies with) ummmmm.... i need too ummmmm.....look it up. see say any sentence but at the need of that sentence say ummmm then see if you sound like you know what your saying

  • Really love your work. I remember growing up doodling the same 30 years ago. It's nice to know that we are not alone. lol

By the way, if you are bored, graph out the time versus umms. I counted at least 136 of them. Pretty interesting especially if you lay the graph on a hyperbolic plane and add a twist.

    Thanks for the great stuff!

  • Could you teach me all math you know forever.

  • you look like anne hathaway :O

  • your mind is as beautiful as you are. Inspirational, the way you combine math visualization and a child like demeanor :)

  • Awesome lecture :D

  • She looks like anne hathaway :)

  • wow your pretty and smart

  • Great video, I especially love the work with the bottles, I hope they've gone to a school or gallery.

  • Lol you'er just like me. You say um after every sentence when presenting. I used to think I was the only 1 who did that

  • what is she talking about?

  • She's so cute! :D

  • um... uh.... um... um.... uh...... hi :)

  • You're adorable.

    I love you. <3

  • She's made Mathematics Sexxy. Yes, that "x" is extra. Go Vi!

  • I'm actually impressed by the way she looks and acts "off-camera". I expected a lot duller looking person.

  • She looks almost exactly how she sounds!

  • This was actually the first and (so far) only time I had NO idea what you were talking about - so I looked it up! You re-awaken my interest in mathematics, thank you so much for that! [Epsilon is bigger than you]

  • Um..

  • She's actualy pretty wow

  • @silverthornboy19 Seems rather thin to me, but I still love her mind. :)

  • u remind me of Ann Hathaway o.O haha XD <3

  • at the very edge of the hyperbolic tiling you should keep the balloons deflated. i tried and it looks great. unfortunately my cat + balloon = Yikes! No pics :(

P.S. Please do one on the art of spidrons!

    P.P.S Nice scarf!

P.P.P.S.how do you come up with these cool ideas?

  • uuuhhh

  • smart inspiring woman

  • Try counting the times she says um and uhhh

  • If they were to make a movie out of the life of Vi Hart, I nominate Anne Hathaway to play her.

  • You should've made a video about the talk and showed that to them, that would probably be better Then um...

  • Less 'um's as you got into u're presentation. Practice, Practice.

  • Great talk; the audience seemed to get a kick out of it!

  • Comment removed

  • i dont notice the um's.

  • You remind me of Fred in Angel

  • Holy crap, Polymat much?

  • ummm....................

  • Heyyy, in my 8th grade geometry class (yes That is highschool course but im in double accelerated heheh) we didasection on non-euclidean geometry and learned about that one disc you showed the tile-ing on.

  • Why is there are drape strangling her?

  • ah ahhhh ahhhm ahhh ahhha hhhhh ahhhm

  • Is Vi a hipster?

  • I saw some Celosia cristata flowers at the super market a few days ago

This video was the first thing I thought of ^ ^

Thank you Vihart for making things interesting again

  • Maths can be really awesome - and purdy. Not that I want to drop my engineering course for maths. Shudder...

  • R U a doctor? And I's don't meanz a MD.

  • 7!!!

  • what are hyperbolic planes?

  • Anne Hathaway

  • Wow,she is so beautiful.

  • Comment removed

  • I love me an intelligent woman.

  • Are you like the youngest one there? lol

  • This is great :) My sister pointed out...she has a lot of spare time lmao

  • MAN you are skinny! :O

  • Just so you guys know, stuttering actually does help you think, so I think it's better for her to say um than to stay silent. o-o

  • The passion, energy and excitement she has for learning... is what every kid comes to public school with and leaves behind when they graduate.

  • I felt extremely awkward watching this

  • I bet she knows the mathematical meaning of life.

  • @mikei4455 42

  • I wish i would have known about this because i would have just come to see you :P

  • shes so nervous...cute!

  • Uhhhhhhhmmmmmmmm.... other than the umms, awesome video!

  • Went to these meetings in '07 '08 and '09.....i love your videos!

  • the part with the apple i think it is because the core has different properties than the skin. i believe if you peel the slice and then dry it it wouldn't bent as well. as for the hyperbolic origami you should look into tessellations. and as for the voice i think you sound like Sara Gilbert

  • Are you autistic¿

  • people say she was nervous but i think she was just really excited XD

  • christ she sounded nervous lol

  • So Vi, I was thinking hair scrunchies. am I right?

  • am i the only one who thinks she sounds like anne hathaway ?

  • @ifearthedark666 she looks like anne hathaway

  • @donkey3girl ikr

  • Did you actually say "grok" at 1:46 ? That makes me chuckle

I don't know how long its been since I've come across a video that inspires further investigation of the video posters blog.

keep up the good work, your contribution is valuable

  • so uhmm this video uhmmm was uhmmm good.. uhmmm yeah

  • you say "uhm.." before every sentence oO nervous much ? :P

  • Do you have aspergers?

  • Calm down!!!!

  • waittt did she say her "co-author" at 2:03 ???

  • How old are you?

  • you sound so nervous

  • @wizgali1234 or excited, it's hard to tell with these geniuses

  • i have actualy learnt more from watching your videos than i have in 2years of top level maths at my school XD

  • 3/15 of the way into this video I passed a note

  • @1rsoberano you mean 1/5?

  • She's amazing. I've never seen anyone make math this real and interesting.

  • Uh, um, uh, um, uh, um.....

  • @pokespa11se she was probably very nervous

  • Now I know what Vi Hart looks like.

  • Dammit, I live in New Orleans and I missed this.

  • So is a hyperbolic plane about negative curvature? Is this what they thought the negative curvature of space would look like?

  • Your combination of art and maths is inspiring...

I think you might have just changed my life... I'm currently doing two mathematical subjects and to artistic ones...

  • You're quite possibly the most awesome person in the whole world.

  • "Wangmauler" Thank you for being an excellent example of social degeneration in a modern society

  • Demonstration of advanced mathematics: $200.

Hand made scarf and black wrist warmers: $55.

Somehow successfully saying "UM" 273 times in 15 min: PRICELESS.

  • Comment removed

  • @wangmauler before reading your comment I even didn't noticed the "Um's" after reading it I paid attention to it and it became annoying :p Um Um Um ....

  • @wangmauler um...

  • @wangmauler um and uh

  • she is soooo skinny... :/

  • AUGH why did I now know of you in January? I WAS THERE and missed your talk >.<

  • Great video, but filling in time by saying Uhhhh every 20 seconds gets a little repetitive.

  • You're obviously smart and great at making videos but you need to work on your presentational skills. Wish you all the success in the future.

  • SHE USED THE WORD GROK!!!! I am in love. I love you Vi.

  • Fuck off everyone commenting about her appearance. Your videos are really awesome keep them up. Thanks for being awesome.

  • @TalkingPixiesHeads People are making fun of her appearance? This is why I don't even bother scrolling down.

  • @Adromeda90210 making any comments positive or negative, it's a nice girl making interesting and funny observations about mathematics, her appearance doesn't come into it.

  • How fascinating!

  • stop talking about maths =/

  • Very VERY skinny.

  • UM and then i UM

  • You look a lot like Anne Hathaway. And you're soo smart. Oh, I wish I lived next to you.

  • She is a nice person I like watching her videos because they radiate this strange kindness and are really cool.

  • what is a hyperbolic plane?

  • The high-school calculus class I am in is crocheting hyperbolic geometry.

    :)

  • also coral

  • I don't like her.. lol

  • You look like Anne Hathaway. :)

  • DFTBA! =D

  • I love your mathematical creativity, and I'm an English major and could help you with your presenting! And then you could help me come up with stuff besides boring textbook stuff to teach my kids so their classes don't deter them from math forever! =P So... you wanna be my new best friend?

  • Brilliantly captivatingly mad! I bet you graduated with honours. Your balloons are inspirational

  • Brilliantly captivatingly mad! I bet you graduated with honours. Your balloons are inspirational.

  • she's a pretty mathematician! you never see that, lol

  • uhm errr uhmm :( I hate when that happens and where you're nervous... i had to do that for school president and i was like errr and like and err and like alll over the place -_-

  • Now I see hyperbolic planes everywhere.

    Walnuts, for instance.

  • i dont get it D:

  • *nerdgasm*

  • You're so awesome Vihart :D

You remind me a little of the actress Anne Hathaway, when she was in Princess Diaries :)

  • @CarolineLb1 Yes! Even her voice :)

  • @CarolineLb1 a gal this smart AND beautiful at the same time... not common or easy to find! she's like a prime number, only, prettier

  • You can make paper fold the way you described but I think it's alittle unwieldy. Get it wet or make the paper yourself by making a press out of the curves.

  • No offense, but here's a tip. Work on saying 'uhm' less. a friendly public speaking tip :)

  • Getting the art back in mathemartics. ;-)

  • Why don't you have an infinite balloon? O_o wanna buy one from me? it only costs... your soul?

  • fruit tun hyperbolic because of vibration, spiders web also is hyperbolic sometimes so energy flows better

  • Incredibly interesting; truly this is an area of Maths that gets too little attention.

  • too legit to quit

  • just go in nature (shell s and stuf)you will have a lot of funn

  • and ...um.. thank you. NO PLEASE. don't stop.

just when maths was becoming interesting.

  • i want her to be my teacher!

  • very very good and well thought out..But please don't use EM ever time you take a breath..

  • im starting to fall in love with you.... or maybe just math

  • "I don't have an infinite balloon." :)

  • @saidamanda that's what I'm going to answer now anytime someone asks me to explain some mathematical concept in a way they can understand.

  • Needs more protein in her diet. :D

  • k. ur smart.

  • Fascinating.

    One recommendation regarding speech:

Get an 'um counter'. Something my dad mentioned to me awhile back is to have someone count how many ums and ahs you make during your presentation. I did it for myself, and it made a huge difference.

  • i've never been so interested in math until i started watching your videos. you're amazing

  • this is brilliant, and anyone not fascinated isn't paying attention. you were obviously a little nervous up front, but once you got rolling your delivery got a lot better - you're really good at this, in case you were wondering, and you haven't already been told enough. :]

  • She looks SO much like Anne Hathaway.

  • um uh, you're brilliant and cute and you just made me comment to more videos in a row than ever before....

  • um..um...um...um...um...um...um...um...

  • she looks a LOT like anne hathaway in this

  • It's wonderful to see such broad, yet faithful and detailed, exploration of mathematical concepts. Very well done!

  • I think some of my math peers went to this conference. I couldn't make it though. I'm sad I missed it.
