What does Tong Poo really mean? East Wind or something? Either way it is great, the only bad thing about this upbeat piano version is that it goes by too fast. Argh, Sakamoto video binging time.

In all honesty, I feel a bit bad about saying such critical things about this guy--I might better spend my time talking up someone I like. What sucks is: I like hardly anyone who has come along in the past twenty years--everyone I like or love has been around for many decades. So: I am kind of protesting THAT by criticizing this guy, who I also don't like.

And: as for saying in print that you admire his Goddamned HAIR: that is the Zenith of Banality and Superficiality. It is so STUPID!!!

I dislike what I percieve as the mix of East and West.... I could be all wrong--maybe this really IS Eastern/Japanese music on piano, but it sounds somewhat Western to me, and also to my ears Just Plain Mild, and I don't like it very much. For me, it lacks character, even though this piece is better than most Sakamoto.

He is gifted technically, but so what?

Gimme real Japanese folk music. Chances are, I'll like that better.

@derek4ur Perhaps you should go back to the beginning of his career, listen to every track in order of release keeping in mind what was done and what was being done by others around the world at the same time. Then do it all again. Perhaps then you might have some inkling of the talent your are disparaging without understanding. Simply put if he was not Japanese he would be hailed the world over for the genius he is!

@mutation999 It doesn't float my boat. It doesn't speak to me. None of his music does. I don't think it has any roots, or not very much--more like nods and references, but not roots, and not much heart. To me, it is like musical spit on a very hot frying pan, bouncing around and then evaporating at the end, but then folks applaud the spectacle and, I guess, "virtuosity."

And, (and I know this from the comments here), they applaud his HAIR....

mmm very interesting. He does not play the Jazz Chords.Well, he does play the the lead and other parts but the Jazzy chords are playback. To "Swing" in Jazz it takes much more that dexterity. Some people just don't have it. I love Ryuchi Sakamoto his YMO stuff.

Hey now i never said it was unimpressive. in fact i love the composition, however i think it should be played as a duet, or adapted for live performance. I realize thats just my take. Sakamoto is one of the Genius Composers of this time!! I love his music since the early days of YMO. Its a pity he didn't perform this as a real 4 handed piece (obviously the bass part comes from a sequencer.)
