  • after breathing every 3, one can breathe every 5, or 7, or 9, and really get moving. Great vid thank you.

  • you know philip toriello your instructions are for gay because your gay and find another b!tch

  • I'm right handed and I always breathe on my left. Doesn't matter I guess.

  • michael phelbs disliked this

  • U HAVE 133,552 VIDEOS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

  • @edyli2000 LOLWUT?

  • breath (breth)

    breathe (breeth)

I wish people would learn the difference.

  • Can swim can't breath :P

  • @MyH96 Wow, if you can't breath, how do you live?

  • i can swim but toda im gunna have a competition so i hope this helps thnx! x

  • So you have to let your air out inside the water? I thought ur suppose to let the air out, outside the water. So basically let the air out and take air in both outside the water.

  • rather than talking so much about non - bilateral teachnique please focus on billateral. We need to hear more and see more on that.

  • breathing to your side isnt the most efficient way to breath during freestyle... its the ONLY way you dumb ass

  • @bre34ck as a learner I haven't gotten breathing perfected quite yet, so i usually resort to having my head out of the water which is not efficient at all

  • thanks...

  • @thetruth325 which url is that from?

  • hopefully this helps me out with my 200 yd. and 500 yd. freestyle events. haha

  • not supposed to face the bottom of the pool, actually.

  • thanks a lot!

  • i think phillip"s videos are very very helpful . am a fan !

  • @madhvi15

Except for the part where he says "Contact your local instructor..." God sake, if were to do that I wouldn't have been in YouTube.

  • "how to breathe"

  • I found the information very helpful on 0:15.

  • a 5 hypoxic works really well for speed but only if you're fit enough

  • Where should the recovery hand during breathing in freestyle? I breath every 4 count kepping head on right shoulder?

  • Im Fhilip tartar sause!

  • When I free style stroke, I seem to take a breath on m right arm every 4-count to keep pace. Does anyone know if this is a bad habit I'm creating? I'm trying to maximize my speed in this stroke, and I didn't know if this is helping or hurting my speed and or endurance.

  • @NANSEMONDSAINTS

    Hope this answers your question:

Freestyle Breathing with Michael Phelps, Katie Hoff, & Bob Bowman

    TheSwimChannel

  • Um...Michael Phelps breathes to one side too. He must be doing something right...

  • @elguapo197610

I think that when he competes, he breaths on one side for speed. But, when he does his practice drills he does it on both sides to keep the muscle development of both sides of his body the same.

He is an expert simmer. He must be able to breath on both sides.

  • i just breath normally.

    is that bad?

  • i always breathed after three strokes

  • should i breath on one side?

  • Technically you're not supposed to breathe on one side because you won't balance your body, try breathing on 3 or 5. I only breathe to my right because it helps me with my 6-beat kick.

  • I always feel my back pain while swimming freestyle...i just can't swim more than 50m for freestyle..but i can swim for so long for breaststroke....have u ever experienced that?

  • No, this hasen't happened to me in freestyle. When I first did butterfly my back hurt, but now it doesn't. Ask someone to look at your stroke, and see what you're doing wrong.

  • @hayleydisca hey, i have the same problem, any luck in finding out a solid cause?? i know i keep my feet too deep but when i try and get more parallel it makes it worse.

  • No, I don't breathe to my dominant hand, I'm a lefty and when I do 500's in practice I breathe to my right.

  • i breath when ever i need to. it works for me

  • i have a qustn.....i breath every six strokes at my right side, i feel comfortable with this because a evite to crash with da moving water from the other swimmers and get more speed, i feel that but i don´t know how good or bad is this....please some body may halpe me with a recomendation? =)

  • By breathing only on your right side you are making your stroke unbalanced, this inturn makes your stroke less efficient. It is hard in a crowded pool but try and focus on breathing on an odd stroke because it really does make a difference!

Hope thats been of some use to you - good luck!

  • YES! I AGREE WITH "LtMajcher" check out "JimmyDshea" videos for swimming. its a 1 video, with all the important stuff to learn!

  • STATISTICS CALCULATION - from

    BR-0 com/olympics htm

  • gud luck formoola.. me hving a gud rest since past 3weeks... perhaps got e energy back by end of ths mth to start kicking bck.. (^_^)..

  • Thanks.. I am 32.. learning to swim from past 2 weeks.. stil very uncomfortable with breathing when swimming freesytle..

  • it's a decent video because he teaches people to have their ear basically rest on their shoulder to keep form. Some people reach and turn while lifting their head to high out of the water to get a breathe. So its a good video for beginners.

  • Great video Brother

  • didnt tell me anything but i like the pool!

  • he didnt show me anything as the other evillage videos didnt. thanks

  • With all due respect to expert village, I from a swimmers perspective think that it is a lot easier to learn from JimmyDshea's swimming videos. I would recommend that new simmers check them out.

  • OMFG, side breathing, no one saw that coming, pointless vid

  • thanks man

  • HELP plz help me any tips on how to do this i can do free style but not the breathing

  • thank you so much for posting this and the other Expert Village swim tutorials, very helpful!!! : )

  • "In freestyle, the most efficient type of breathing, is side-breathing".. sorry but i had to lol at that

  • wats funny about it? xxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • Cos of course its side breathing. Youd have to be retarded to think that breathing in the front is more efficient lol

  • true, why even bother making this vid, its obvious u breath from side

  • Hey, I am new to swimming, and i had a question about breathing.. should my head be looking directly at the floor of the pool?

  • im pretty sure you should look slightly in front of you.. so not directly at the bottom. and when you breathe try to rest your ear on the opposite shoulder to the side youre breathing on i think

  • Hey thanks!

  • yes u r right, so ur head broke the water instead ur face.

  • Lol fail. I breathe in my right, and I write, and throw a football with my left. :D I hate breathing 2 sides. Also I never breathe 3 times per stroke. At the beginning, if I do that, I find that I feel weakened. Even if I take 8 strokes per breath when I dive, then I take 5 strokes per breath. And when I'm doing a 50, by the time I'm halfway, I find myself taking 3 strokes per breath, then 2 strokes per breath, till I am totally tired out. =S

  • what? I don't even have to turn my head very much to take a breath, my nose detours the water around it and creates an air bubble, for me to breath. He explains the technique the way I explain it to my 8 year old students.

  • how ever sees this video is getting really really bad technics... you shouldn't look down will your swimming, you're supossed to loook a little bit forward

  • No you don't know what your talking about. You barely BARELy want it forward. Take it from a nationally ranked swimmer ;) Feel free to check vids for proof

  • and what does a little bit forward mean?? I said a little bit, and you can check it in one of phelps, thorpe, ian crocker, etc. videos

  • one thing is: u dont swim or do the 3 strokes per breath in a competitive swim. when ur competing against people what u wanna do is breath only once or twice. the breathing takes too much time if u breath every 3 in a competition. breathing every 3 strokes is when ur practicing. it helps u hold ur breath longer if u do it more frequently. then u can do 5 breaths per stroke and so on to help u.

  • 5 breaths per stroke? that's a bit much...I think you mean 5 strokes per breath. :)

  • ah, my bad. =D.

  • lolz imagine 5 breaths per stroke :-P

  • lolz. my bad. i meant 5 strokes per breath. LOL. =D.

  • when i use this tecnique a swallow a whole breath of WATER

  • Same here, it's really difficult for me.

  • well when i did this, i used to have the same problem. practice will really help you get good. if it still happens, then you probably need to be able to keep your self a float better

  • yes you are right ..... You have to do lot of practice for your breathing

  • i can breathe on either side depending on the situation, but i'll stick to oneside if i can't catch my breath.

  • I breath on both of my arms, i'm used to it. left right breate, right left breate.

  • your head look 50-60 degree up then can breathe sumkind of turning your head and only breathe 1 side...don't breathe left and right..

  • woo yea

i do have trouble breathing with my left side, which is the weak one xD i need to be focused on that but i always forget and just breathe with my right side

  • Hi, I am just learning how to swim. Could you give me some tips, advice, ideas, encouragement and or suggestions. Thanks much.

  • hey :P

u_u just practice and you'll see how you'll get better and better..i think the thing is if you like it you'll do great!!! personally i LOOVE swimming good luck ;D

  • all the proffesional swimmers seem to breath only to one side.

  • yea i've noticed... like michael phelps only breathes on his right side.. and he did awesome! (:

  • huh, that was something i didnt expect, thanks ^^

  • I breathe on my left arm side a lot but my dominant arm is my right.

  • you dont need to breathe on a 50m frontcrawl. No point, it waists time

  • I've also found it easier to have a cigarette after a swim rather than during. I've noticed that competitive swimmers agree with this technique also.

  • @spannerboy72 smokers excuse

  • @spannerboy72 LOL! I actually smoke and I am a very good swimmer this is very funny to see. I also smoke weed.

  • @spannerboy72

wait wait wait wait. A cigar? What the heck????????????I'm 11 years old, and your talking about cigars?Dude you need to have some respect for the kids who are on youtube too man.

  • @spannerboy72 lol

  • @spannerboy72 i know some guy who smokes a bong right after he is done playing underwater rugby because his lungs have expanded.. Maximizes it i guess.

  • i have alot of problem with freestyle stroke too =.= cant breathe properly, body orientation is out and hmm list just goes on and on.. i guess i needa join a swim school soon

  • nice undies man

  • On one of the last comments, I said 'faith' instead of 'face'.

  • I have a hard time with bilateral breathing. What's weird is that I'm left handed, but I breathe on my right side because I'm right hand dominant.

  • how do u breathe during flips in freestyle? in backstroke? this would help a lot... PPPPPPPPPPPLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS........... NEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDDD UUUURRR HELLLLLLPPPP...PLLLSSS....tnx

  • As you flip, breathe bubbles out of your nose so you don't get water up your nose. There's no way to inhale during a flip turn. In backstroke, you should be keeping your faith above the water so it shouldn't be too hard to breathe. When you're on you back underwater, breathe bubbles out of your nose once again.

  • Either what homicidalchocolate said or you cover your nose with you upper lip, which is efficent, but hard.

  • *Thank U*

  • water gets up my nose =P

  • how do u breathe during flips in freestyle? in backstroke? this would help a lot... tnx

  • every time i do this water goes into my ear?? tips?

  • Get earplugs

  • dat happens with me too. Everytime I go to take a breath water gets into my ear but thats part of swimming so I get over it

  • doesnt it get irritating? it feels like it goes straight in and my eyes get watery... imma try the ear plug thos

  • Damn, I need to work on this. I'm assuming it helps with stamina. Usually, when I swim, I take a deep breath, sprint, then lift my head ouf of the water for air.....I get tired out fast which sucks, so hopefully I can practice this technique. Thanks, expertvillage dude!! 5 stars

  • This video is very good. I had problems with freestyle breathing and this helped me out

  • Right! Not to mention his "catch-up" stroke which is going to create SORE in your shoulders and to slow you down: go for a one side breathe down and the other one back AND a deep and immediate catch on entry.

  • Why the play non è diverso?

  • thanks man

  • Why look then?

  • so what everybody makes mistakes.

  • hes teaching the basics. "he's not a very good swimmer"? you already know what he can do because you saw his 1:23 min video?

  • Nice talk again. However breathing every two ensure a constant degree of oxygen, and in my view is better for a longer distance race.
