Brother Luther, maybe my favourite character of the game! The most stable but also one of the weakest in strength.... All in da mind bitch, amen! *spouish*
First time playing. Me: Okay! Health gauge: Check! Sanity gauge: Check! Magick gauge: Check! Enchanted sword: Check! Shield spell: Check! Saved game: Check! All right! I'm as ready as I can be! Black Guardian, here I come! Later. *Paul's head blows up* Me: ...
I liked Xel because she really screwed with people's heads. She adds a nice touch in this scene by being the only one to whisper Paul's name in a very creepy manner.
This ending just proves Paul's character. His efforts didn't matter as he just wasn't a force to be reckoned with. He was too weak, too frail to take on something this big..both in body and mind. He was oblivious and boy did he pay for it. Truly a tragic character.
Why do you think Xel'lotath is so fascinated with heads? :)) I mean, why all of her minions are headless (except maybe the zombies) and she, herself, is headless too?
Paul seems to feel like just a filler character (his spirit doesn't linger, he carries on nothing; hell, the only significance is that Peter gets the two-edged sword in the old cathedral).
One of the greatest games EVER made, imho. I used to play it over and over after I beat it with all three entities. I only wish they ported it to the PC...But GameCube (and my GC broke! Ahh!) exclusive since Nintendo bought Silicon Knights.
I always wondered why they didn't try to make the blood from Xel'lotaths death decent. It looks like something from the N64. Other than that, I loved this part :D
I think by the time Peter came around, the Black Guardian was bored and wanted a challenge. Remember how one of Pious' minions say that it's growing restless?
So when Peter gets there, it seals off the exit and entertains itself by tormenting him with it's minions.
On it's final stage, it just keeps trying to stomp Peter. Naturally the Black Guardian underestimated Peter and was simply trying to crush him like they did to Paul.
you are indeed right..... never underestimate an opponent from his appereance... he can seem a little powerless human but he has done a lot of damage to the ancient's plans...
@NBluth Mantorok is essentially just a hunk of flesh, a "dead" ancient. Plus there isn't any mention in the game of a yellow ancient.
If they did make a second, they would have to go probably when Mantorok was actually a living ancient. Though I don't expect it to happen. If you play through, killing all three ancients, it pretty much says that all three were killed and Mantorok was left the sole survivor in his tomb.
Yes, but it says mantorok is plotting. "Dead" is just an exaggeration used by Pious to mock the powerlessness of the sealed Mantorok.
Also, Yellow magic appears in the game twice:The transport spell that takes Pious to the temple and the scroll that turns Anthony into a zombie creature. Developers have confirmed that this magic belongs to a Fifth Ancient, The Yellow Ancient, who is more powerful than even Mantorok. If that's not a sequel hook, I don't know what is.
@NBluth True. But everyone always thinks too heavily on this kind of stuff saying that it has this "Really HIDDEN, DEEP MEANING!!" when it was just meant to entertain, not have hidden meanings. Happens with everything. I can't say whether thats the case here of if they are making a second. They already have the standards set really high with this one, it'd be hard to make one that would beat this one. I have seen that Silicon Knights has a gov't grant to do it, but don't know if it's true or not
My point has nothing to do with "Deep Hidden meanings" It has to do with Loose ends and possible sequel hooks, like the Yellow Ancient and Pious's cryptic threat at the end of the game.
All evidence points to a second game, btw. Nintendo of America just renewed the trademark for Eternal Darkness, and interest in a sequel has been expressed for years by both fans and developers. Looks like its finally happening.
@NBluth I wouldn't have a problem with a second game, but I don't see it being anywhere as good as this one.
And I'm aware of the interest in it. Like I said, apparently Silicon Knights was planning on making a second one for the next generation consoles, which it would probably be for the Wii, 3DS or whatever console they come out with after the 3DS is released. Who knows? Though they have done stuff with Microsoft too.
Probably one of the most, if not the most, haunting moments I have ever played in any game...
I loved Paul - he was sane, he wouldn't subdue to the sanity effects and he was strong.... for him just to die like that in a moment was painful, and sad.
It really wanted me to carry on playing and beat the bastards!
This has made me want to reply ED all over again, I still have the disk!
And the initial whispers and cutscene is fantastic!!
Anybody notice how Pious has gone from ordering the Black Guardian like it's just another one of his minions to a sycophant? Appearently he found difficulty controlling it before this scene occurred.
At the beginning of the game, remember when Pious has to pick one of the three artifacts? Each artifact respresent an ancient. Whichever you made Pious pick, that ancient will be the main villian. So yeah that is someone else.
dude i love killing the black gaurdeans.....they are so easy and are fun to watch them try to kill me ive beating this game like 18 times and never once died while trying to kill them and its realy funny wat happens to paul i mean all the sudden he gets crushed like a bug
Such fond memories...I remember gripping the controller tightly looking at the size of the beast (not sure which path but the first of these cutscenes i saw was with the Ulyaoth guardian) thinking "ok, here we g.......*splat*" I think my jaw was on the floor for a good ten minutes after.
Not to be mean, but how can anybody find this scene funny? I was like "um...shit" when this happened. Paul may not have been the greatest character in the game, but he still had some importance. Not to mention he was a rather tragic character and I like tragic characters. Definaly a rather chilling end.
Are you serious? Pwn is a verb, meaning to dominate or to defeat. It is an internet meme created by the purposeful or otherwise typographical error caused by the proximity of the O and P keys. Pronounced variously as pone, pawn, and pun.
Ah, I remember that scene. Looking back it's pretty funny, but at the time it helped build up tension for when you have to fight them for real. If you don't keep moving, they actually use those moves on you late in the fight.
question since i now now that there are three guardians so you can change the type of ancient you want to fight before you play because i saw a play through that featured Xel'lotath
I laughed SO FRIKKIN HARD at this chapter(I had the blue jellyfish-like guardian stomp on him.).
You know, does Paul's death matter that much? I mean, all the other characters that die take with them a key element of the plot (One of the essances of the other guadians or whatnot) or are mentioned latter in the game, whereas Paul just gets his ass kicked to show how big and bad the guardian is... but if he gets killed before that, humanity is doomed like with everyone else in the game.
I think Paul's important, because after he dies, the guardian tells Pious to back off and leave it alone. If that didn't happen, Pious would have known about Peter killing the guardian and stealing the artifact--but since Pious was told to leave the guardian alone, he had no idea it happened. So things would have been slightly different if Paul had lived.
I chose the blue artifact so I got the Ulyaoth ending to this level. And it seems it was the bet of the three. I was ready to fight the monster and then *STOMP*. I was like "... yeah... whatever".
I remember seeing the 2nd one. I kinda feel sorry for him even though I was just watching it on TV. The good point is that the game caugh my atention.
I was playing on Ulyaoth when I saw this. All of a sudden...BAM! Squashed like a bug. Battling this bastard in Chapter 9 had me smashing my head on the floor when he started spawning those zombies. But I got past him. And now I'm stuck on Chapter 10.
The Reveal Invisible (of the dominant alignment, of course) and Shield spells are probably your best friends for fighting the Vampire. And just in case you don't realise, once you get into the basement you must destroy the slab he keeps using to heal himself with, first. :)
Wait... How does he die in three different cutscenes? >.> Or are these if you make a mistake in the game? Would someone mind explainging, please? ._.;
In the beginning when you play as Agustus, you have to choose one of three artifacts. You take a different path in the game depending on the one you choose.
