Out of all the videos of this thing this is the first one I've come across that actually shows how normal everything was BEFORE the crash. You were just talking about the features of your camera and other things and then all of a sudden a plane goes down. Damn. I knew what was coming but it's still...
something mechanical went went wrong. only other possiblity: the pilot suffered some kind of heart attack or stroke. since both the planes & pilot ended up in a millions pieces.. they'll never figure it out
@TwistedBillyGoat. I agree that it may appear that he was conducting an intentional split-S, but I do not believe that's the case. The roll right began 1 second after pullup, which would not have been intentional. He goes for more altitude as the roll continues to inverted, which has turned him 90 degrees off. Rather than allow the roll to continue as he moves over crowd, he then appears to intentionally tuck to avoid crowd.
Whatever he did, he had exactly 4 seconds to figure it out.
A piece of the tail was missing preventing the 74year old pilot from pulling up and out of the dive. The pilot, as well as 8 people in the crowd died, 7 of which died on impact, 2 later died in the hospital.
I'm not a know-it-all, and have the utmost respect for Jimmy Leeward and compassion for those killed and injured. I must say, however, it APPEARED that Leeward was performing a perfect split S maneuver WITH THE EXCEPTION of altitude judgment. In other footage, he can be seen rolling the plane inverted, climbing slightly, then attempting to complete the half loop. If was it WAS mechanical failure, it mimicked a flawless split S maneuver, with the except of having required altitude to complete.
What a sad day for the entire aviation community. This is such a tragic accident and one with a one in a million chance of happening the way it did. I am a member of a local museum, and it was brought to my attention today, that had our museum had it's aircraft ready to go to Reno, our staff would have been in those box seats. Chilling thought. All thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and their families. A very sad day for all.
HOLY SHIT. Those poor people. I sure hope the death toll does not go up any further. My thoughts go out to the victims and their families. I hope they someday find the peace they so desperately need right now. RIP
Notice the progression of this story First he was 80, now he is "only" 74. First a piece of the plane fell off and now he is a big hero because the plane was headed for a more populated area of the grandstand. Bottom line, this guy was a clown and should never have been flying a high speed airplane around spectators. 8 people paid for his foolishness with their lives.
@jimstand should have never been flying a highspeed airplane around spectators? what the hell do you go to an airshow for, watch them drive around the runways? Its called taking risks and sometimes all your marbles are out of the jar and this happens
@jimstand he was 74 and a flying ace. October 21, 1936[1] – September 16, 2011 his final action saved 1,000's of lives, he was a well respected pilot, flew from 1964 to 2011 and logged 1'000's of hours in several aircraft, including the Ghost that he rebuilt and loved. he's not a clown but a well loved and respected man. I wish people like you would do a bit of research before spewing moronic slurs. Leeward was a flying ace and in several movies, course reading may be above your level
My God, it was the last race of the day. ppl werent expecting this at all. just imagine, a friday afternoon just warping up a day of entertainment. when all of a sudden a fun friday turns into a tragic memory. i've been to the air races before and i tend to forget the dangers of it. but stuff like this shows just how dangerous it could be. my thoughts and prayers to the victims of this tragedy.
photographs showed the “elevator trim tab” coming loose. “That would certainly explain what happened. That would create a huge problem at that speed. It controls the up and down motion of the nose. It’s a flight control at the rear of the aircraft. A very important feature as concerns loss of control. That would do it,” he said.
The old geezer pilot did not black out. Pictures on the Fair & Balance network, FOX NEWS, highlighted with photographic evidence that a chunk of the elevator broke off the tail of the P-51.
"Cant see the pilot" Are you serious?? The aircraft is in a nose dive after a high G turn. if the tail section failed as stated, (Which if you knew anything about aircraft, you can see the trim tab IS missing on the elevator on the pics just before impact) The pilot wouldnt be sitting pretty in the cockpit, as he was probably slammed around from the forces. Get off it people.
I think he blacked out when he made the climb. The plane then rolled over and went in. The loss of a trim tab alone would not have caused that unless he completely lost control of the elevators and rolled to try and prevent the plane from stalling and possibly crashing into the crowd. Such a shame. RIP
@Zodi77 it's called 'limiting', and it's a feature of most devices that utilize a microphone for recording...keeps playback normalized so electronics aren't damaged.
My prayers go out to the people who were injured and the families of those who have lost their lives. May God comfort you with his unending love in your time of sorrow. For those who were injured, whose lives will be affected for many years, I pray that you have as speedy a recovery as is possible and that God provides the strength you need to endure any pain, both physical and emotional, that you are feeling. To the air show pilots and community, I pray for your safety, your sport. Blue skies!
Something's not jiving between the initial "official" reports and those of the spectators. Many have reported seeing "many people killed". Hard to believe it was really just 3 people *including* the pilot. I hope the official reports are accurate, obviously, for the sake of the families of those who did lose their lives. Very sad.
I dont really know how to say this but im going to try and hope people understand what i mean. This is a heart breaking incident, my prayers go out to those who were killed, injured and the families. I am sure that Jimmy Leeward used his skills to make sure that plane didnt injure more then it did. I read a lot about him and the way he talked about his plane was sweet. It was his "baby" And im pretty sure if he were here now he would say that passing doing what he loved wouldnt be half bad.
The airplane was going so fast an hit so hard that there was nothing left of it
what surprised me is the lack of a fireball and post crash fire from the burning fuel,I think this is a perfect example of what happends to an airplane when it crashes at such a high rate of speed, there is just very little debris left, thats why there was not much left of the 9/11 airplanes for all those wonder about a conspiracy.
I have been to this air show, and to Burley Idaho for the boat regatta, and to many pro drags races to count. I have seen a couple bad accidents. This happens now and then, it is a roll of the dice. Racer, or spectator, you take a chance! It seems the only fear these racers have, is hurting some one else when they crash. I'm sure if Jimmy was conscience, he did his best to miss the crowd. Wishing a speedy recovery to those hurt. Condolences to those killed.
Every tragedy brings out the best and worst in people, as seen in these posts. Don't speculate on what caused this horrific accident, let the experts do their job. If you cannot physically or financially help those who suffered a loss, then at least offer words of encouragement and support. If we believe in a higher power, it is our duty to pray for others. I hope some will rethink your posts and delete. Nothing remains anonymous forever and surely you would prefer a more positive legacy.
Horrifying. There are so many accidents at airshows lately. It's very sad when this happens. I heard the pilot's family was at the show. My condolences go out to them and all those involved.
why is everyone just standing there. at least go over and hold someone's hand or rub their forehead, you don't have to be a medic to be comforting to the victims. everyone is just standing there like zombies..
I lived in Lemmon Valley for 6 years (2002-2008) my heart goes out to the victims, and the city and residents of Reno and Washoe Co. An unbelievable tragedy.
I took a look at a series of photographs as the aircraft was about to hit the ground. The tail section is completely intact however the pilot is not in view. It is possible he had suffered a medical emergency or was trying to reach something inside the cockpit. Very hard to tell. For the P51 overspeed normally results in a collapse of the elevators which fold backwards. Clearly this did not happen. While I cannot rule out mechanical failure the most likely explanation is medical.
No disrespect, but how is a pilot who crashed into the stands a hero? I feel like the air racing community thinks that no one is at fault. Are we really chalking this up to an act of god?
I was there today and saw this first hand. Aweful seen. I'd like to add from my vantage point (front row 100 yards further down to the right) I was able to see the plane make one last second effort to miss going straight into the stand and it hit just at the front instead. I believe the pilot was a hero and did all he could to get away from the crowds with a broken airplane. My prayers go out to the families of those lost and for the injured.
i am very sad to hear about this i hope yo were ok if only there was away to go back in time and just rwind everythig but you knw what they sayeverything happens for a rason i just hope the families ae ok
From the other video it looks like he's trying to pull up and maneuver away from the spectators. Without knowing more and how soon he knew there was a problem we can only speculate on how bad this could have been. With his experience and skill I'm sure he saved many lives while knowing he was not going to make it.
I hope everyone involved can push through this tragedy and continue with their lives and the sport that they love.
I was there and I saw him clearly headed straight into the crowd, then made a last minute control input that moved slightly the nose slightly toward the tarmac, away from the stands. It hit right at the front (in the front rows of the chairs or hopefully missed the seats by a few feet) nose in. It was hard to tell exactly where it went in, even though I saw it. Seemed power was still full on. Terrible..but I think he made a heroic effort to miss the crowd, best he could.
@KCRQ Years ago I read that there are regulations that prevent stunt fliers from flying towards the spectators, that they are only supposed to fly parallel to the viewing area. Isn't that still true?
All I can say is...wow...hope those who are injured pull out ok. Some national guard were training in the area. Within mintues they had dozens of emergency personel onsite
Hey insensitive "know-it-alls?" Jimmy Leeward - 10,000+ logged flying hours, many of those aerobatic - VERY capable pilot. Unlimited planes - rebuild from ground up and tested redundantly for safety - Race course NOT over or near stands - Other racer stated "saw Jimmy's tail come apart" - Therefor NOT pilot error. His last second selfless actions probably saved hundreds of lives "was heading right for the stands!" Tragic loss for air races and families of victims! Blue skies Jimmy! Ya done good
@drewmartinlive You better look at the picks yourself. The plane looked top shape just before impact. There was no pilot visible in the canopy though. I wonder if he had a heart attack or passed out.
omg...i saw one of these in Delaware before and i was always paranoid about shit like this, im glad that some ppl noticed in advance and started running away, glad youre ok man...i pray the people injuried will recover
Terrible indeed. I saw a more graphic video, and my heart just sunk. So many people's lives changed forever on this day. RIP to those who passed and praying for a quick recovery to those who were injured.
Jimmy Leeward was a great pilot and dear acquaintance to my family, I was supposed to be there today. My prayers go out to out the spectators and flying families in Reno.
As a pilot myself I can only speculate as to what happened, and imagine what must have been going through Jimmy's head in those last moments.
At least he died doing what he loved, and from the look of the flight path in the other videos I've seen, it looks like he did his best to aim for the tarmac in front of the stands.
As for the people on the ground - my thoughts are with them.
You were there? That was a close shave. If I were there, I would have to sit down. True people died, many others hurt, many more still came within a few yards of death. That's scary as hell.
I wasn't there and don't know anybody that was but I just wanted to say thanks for your concern and thoughts, it's always good to see people from around the world thinking about and helping others! :)
fuck, this sucks. My mom and little brother and sister live right next to air races, was hella worried today. hope everyone that was injuried is alright.
@xmetalrocker ....And IF you flew Harriers *something I SERIOUSLY doubt....not even on an Xbox*, you would know a P51 is not a jet so why not shut-up your lying face and quit making yourself look like an idiot *even though there is a good chance you are one*
People Please... I live in the great city of Reno, Nevada and it is heartbreaking to see this at the very place I visit so often every year... my heart goes out to all the people who passed away during this crash and hope the people who got injured have a speedy recovery.
I still can't believe more people didn't die or get injured it was some kind of miracle with the plane hitting that close and most of the people are walking after the crash
@niselat the evidence is conclusive that the aircraft suffered a structual failure of the elevator trim tab, trust me, I have pics sent to me that you have not seen, and in no way was Jimmy Leeward at fault.
I agree, this idiot apathicempathy is a loser. You can ban them from the video or page
A shame people where killed and hurt. Why do they allow those planes to fly over crowds or so close to them. '74, '77' '79, '08, '10, '11. The promoters need to stop before it happens again
his age is 74 yrs old so when you are calling him names you could at least get the age right. The pilot also was a stunt pilot for movies so he was a very capable pilot
@errickidle everyone reacts differently, it is really hard to predict. Some people completely freeze in shock, others find it surreal, and are passive, as though watching a film. Some will get a rush of adrenalin and race in to help without considering their own safety. Too many people trying to help stops emergency vehicles from getting access. Video footage has often been really helpful in accident investigations.
To errickidle, Thank you for uploading the video. But, could you please disable the comment section? There is too many cruel and immature comments being made. I would hate for one of the relatives to read these. Not only, it's trashing your video.
@errickidle Thank you for showing symathy. I live there. It's a tragedy, something that was never meant to happen. People, be nice, please. Three have died here so far. Show a little respect or empathy.
@slightlycrazy777 I live in reno and i go almost every year and its sad thats tragedies like this happen. Its even more traic that theres people out there that will say horrible things and take no consideration towards the victims and their families. thank you for posting a respectful comment
@errickidle I know. It's a horrible thing. I just hope everyone else who was injured is doing okay. I;m more concerned about them than any of the insensitive commenters here.
@errickidle You're welcome. But personally, I'm more concerned about everyone else that was injured than I am about all of the insensitive commenters here. I hope everyone else is doing okay.
Jimmy never knew what happened, that p-51 pulled all the way around he woke up in heaven, I am so sorry to all you people who had to see that

I hope everyone involved can push through this tragedy and continue with their lives and the sport that they love.

@Ripskin16
KCRQ 5 months ago

Ya done good
drewmartinlive 5 months ago 298
@drewmartinlive You better look at the picks yourself. The plane looked top shape just before impact. There was no pilot visible in the canopy though. I wonder if he had a heart attack or passed out.

errickidle 5 months ago 2
As a pilot myself I can only speculate as to what happened, and imagine what must have been going through Jimmy's head in those last moments.
At least he died doing what he loved, and from the look of the flight path in the other videos I've seen, it looks like he did his best to aim for the tarmac in front of the stands.
As for the people on the ground - my thoughts are with them.

@fight2flyphoto You don't hear the engine cut out, see s 'moke or pieces flying off the plane. It was definitely the pilot's fault.
niselat 5 months ago
@niselat
There's NO WAY you can say what it was at this point!
Give me a break. If you were that good the NTSB would have found you a long time ago!
The pilot was VERY experienced. Not saying it couldn't have been pilot error but there is absolutely no way you can say one way or the other!
bratz2 5 months ago
@niselat the evidence is conclusive that the aircraft suffered a structual failure of the elevator trim tab, trust me, I have pics sent to me that you have not seen, and in no way was Jimmy Leeward at fault.
windhovernz 5 months ago 9
I agree, this idiot apathicempathy is a loser. You can ban them from the video or page
A shame people where killed and hurt. Why do they allow those planes to fly over crowds or so close to them. '74, '77' '79, '08, '10, '11. The promoters need to stop before it happens again

bella31710 5 months ago
his age is 74 yrs old so when you are calling him names you could at least get the age right. The pilot also was a stunt pilot for movies so he was a very capable pilot
littlesmoke444 5 months ago
@errickidle everyone reacts differently, it is really hard to predict. Some people completely freeze in shock, others find it surreal, and are passive, as though watching a film. Some will get a rush of adrenalin and race in to help without considering their own safety. Too many people trying to help stops emergency vehicles from getting access. Video footage has often been really helpful in accident investigations.
JillHiggsBoson 5 months ago 2
@JillHiggsBoson omg..what a real footage..send this to the ntsb..probably need that for investigation

you would think after all those years of crashes, they would stop flying near crowds, or stop the event.
