im just wondering is it better to have the lcd screen on the top where the shotgun mic is on the left or right on the bottom because im thinking of getting a panasonic camcorder i dont know what kind or a sony hvr-z5u
does it record to flash memory or minidv tapes? because on one site it says you can get flash memory for it but most cameras like this record to minidv tapes. if flash memory than how do you import it?
Can you please tell what you get when transfer long files to PC? I have Canon HF-S11 with 64 GB internal memory (it records in 24mbs like this one - check some videos on my acc) but when transfer to PC it cut video files to 2GB and give gaps and clicks when I put them in Sony vegas. Looking for camera in pro level...this one looks great....
I am confused by what is acceptable broadcast quality (UK) today. Would this camcorder meet the standards for documentary film making? Or is this a complicated question!
bunkofurko, your clearly clueless...just like cameras have come on in leaps and bounds, so to have codecs...quality is not directly linked to codec. (Why would panasonic slowly be phasing out their dvcpro hd 100 mb/s format (over 10 years old) and pushing more towards AVC H.264. (ps I make hd films for nat geo etc..) Point two about the size of frame, again forget all this marketing bull. (an EX series cam shoots a higher res frame than HDCAM, does that make HDCAM not true HD...just laughable...
The number of pixels is not everything. Digital Betacam easly beats both AVCHD and HDV in quality. You can easly upconvert DigiBeta to make stunning high-definition videos. Plus, less pixels on 2/3 inch CCDs means bigger pixels, and bigger pixels means less digital noise in low light. If I had the money, I'd go for eiher DigiBeta or HDCAM. By the way, HDCAM is not that much of an improvement over DigiBeta. HD is still a gimmick in my opinion. We are not even ready yet for decent SD.
I think it should be cheaper than the Z5, Just like Panasonic AVCCAM is cheaper than its DVCPRO-HD counterpart. To me, the exciting part however, is the fact that the S270 is getting cheaper and cheaper. I want to get that one before it is discontinued.
@ConsumerDV True that the Z5 is not DVCPRO-HD, but the NX5 isn't AVC-Intra either. NX5 is precisely an AVCCAM equivalent at 24Mbits/sec. Now, the question is, does MPEG-4 discard more data than MPEG-2? Or does MPEG-4 contain more data than MPEG-2 at same bit rates? This is what I can't find an answer to anywhere. I know though, that it takes more effort to uncompress MPEG-4 for playback, so maybe it contains more information, heh? I also agree that the HDV is very "starved" at 25Mbits/s
@ConsumerDV Well, if the MPEG-4 contains more information than MPEG-2, albeit more compressed than MPEG-2, then MPEG-4 would be better. My unknown is how much of the information is actually uncompressed from MPEG-4 for playback, as opposed to being discarted. Also, 24Mbits/sec of Pro oriented AVCHD and 25Mbits/sec of HDV indicate of close match in quality. Also, the NX5 already costs cheaper than Z5U. Don't you get what you pay for usually?
DV and HDV has the same bitrate. DV is SD and HDV is HD. How can this be possible? Because of different codecs. MPEG-4 is a more adanced codec than MPEG-2, so AVCHD @ 24 Mbit/s looks better than HDV @ 25 Mbit/s.
@ConsumerDV MPEG-2 was originaly designed for DVD. DV is not MPEG-2. HDV is, and it is compressing groups of 15 frames, that's why it is able to fit it in the same 25Mbits/sec rate as DV. In my opinion, intraframe DV is far superior to HDV. I'd exchange my HD1000U for the top of the line DVCAM 2/3 inch sensor camera, but I don't have $10,000. MPEG-4 was originaly designed for internet streaming. Its purpose was to discard lots of data. Saying that MPEG-4 is advanced is marketting talk.
"MPEG-2 was originaly designed for DVD." -- Wrong. " DV is not MPEG-2." -- I did not say it was. "In my opinion, intraframe DV is far superior to HDV." -- whatever your opinion is, DV is SD, while HDV is HD. "Saying that MPEG-4 is advanced is marketting talk." -- I suggest you read more of that "marketing talk" to understand how MPEG-4 is different from MPEG-2.
@ConsumerDV Moving Pictures Expert Group needed new set of standards for DVD, and they come up with MPEG-2. MPEG-1 was designed to squeeze movies onto a CD. MPEG-2 allows higher resolution movies to be put on DVD in variable bit rate. (about 8 Mbits/sec max). MPEG-4 was designed for video streaming on the internet. It was MPEG-4's main purpose. They adopted it later for HD, because MPEG-4 compression is very "efficient" (marketting term again) which means discarting a lot of data.
I think if you do a little more research you will find that technically HDV is 1440 x 1080 and HD is 1920 by 1080 and if you do a comparison of the two on a full HD screen there is a noticeable difference in image quality, so to say that HDV is HD is not the whole truth, it would be more accurate to say HDV is low end HD and HD is full HD.
YouTube won't do any camera or format justice. Some videos will look very nice depending on the recording and output settings, but to really compare them would be to view them on a blue-ray disc.
@visoneer32, BBC HD is 1440x1080, is it Full HD? DirecTV and Dish Network is either 1440x1080 or 1280x1080, is it Full HD? DVCPROHD is 1440x1080 or 1280x1080 too, depending on whether it is 50Hz or 60Hz. There is no point of having full frame if there is not enough bitrate to resolve all the pixels.
Bottom line is , if the pixel count is 1440X1080 it is referred to as "HDV", and if the pixel count is 1920X1080 it is referred to as "HD" or "True HD", these are the names that the companies have given these screen sizes. From 720 and up is "HD", but the consumer/prosumer needs the labels as a reference point, The latest iMacs are capable of displaying 2560 x 1440 resolution, so I guess in the not to distant future we will have cams for the consumer/prosumer with truest HD (LOL).
i hope sony better keep the price low for this cam, because we can only use memory stick not any SDHC card to do recording, which means those media cost (and also the HDD recorder)we pay will only go to sony, with panasonic's HMC150 or JVC's HM100 you can use any kind of SDHC card, and i can't put sony's MS card into my Macbook pro's SD card slot because they are not compatible,so the Memory stick pro duo better do a good job for us!
From what I understand, AVCHD is MPEG-4 rather than MPEG-2 as is mentioned in the video. I'm hoping it's just a "typo" because MPEG-2 at 24Mbps is, well, HDV. Sony being Sony, it's not surprising that it will force users into its proprietary flash card. Which is OK if it can come anywhere to the price points and performance of the SDHC cards. Also, if the solid state HD can come reasonably priced, I say <$700 is reasonable, OK.
This will be a bit of curiosity until a price is announced.
Sony has lost it. MS duo Pro, small sensor: wake up!!! AVC is not a serious format, all they needed to do was a simpler version of the EX1 running on SD cards. No wonder the Canon EOS 5Dii is becoming a cult piece of kit..
Yes, I'm not too excited about Full HD on 1/3" sensors. The Z5 is barely sensitive enough at 1440x1080. With NXCAM, they're cutting the pixel size 25% or so. Not cool. At the same time, I doubt we're going to get the EX1's 1/2" sensors at this price point for a long time, so it's par for the course. Still XDCAM EX at this price point would be awesome, even on 1/3" sensors. Editing AVC is still a showstopper for me.
It's one thing to be first, but it's another to be accurate. Please RE-DO the video and be accurate when speaking about the capabilities. There are numerous errors in your presentation.
Thanks for your comments- we only had a few minutes to pull this together before the prototype was given back. We plan to re shoot it once the production models are released and more detailed information is available.
I was reading on MicroSD-to-MS adapters. It seems that they do not work in Sony camcorders. On another hand, these new cameras will accept SDHC cards directly, so no problem here.
Hi Paul AVCHD isn't MPEG2 but the camera is capable to record in AVCHD up to 24Mbps, producing 1920x1080p images as well as 720/50p and MPEG-2 SD format.
