LOL dude the government is going to bend you over on your taxes no matter what. We might as well start getting cars that are better for the environmen on the road.
Well scooters are fine and all but the fact of the matter is they can take maybe 2 people at a time. They aren't as safe and families would never use them Besides this car that carries 5 people gets 230mpg has air conditioning and is safer. Like I said we are getting screwed out of our tax dollars one way or another might as help the enviornment while we are at it lol. You and I both know the government will do whatever they want wth your taxes. Look at the stimulus bill lol.
getalife04: You shouldn't believe that the Volt is saving that much resources and energy. The EPA has come out and said that it doesn't back that "230 mpg" in GM's latest ad campaign. It's deceptive. The Volt also requires tremendous amounts of electricity, but GM is only talking miles per gallon. Does an electric scooter get "infinity mpg"?
u cant "save up" electricity the same way u save up gasoline
electricity is generated continously, and only last the moment it is generated from the generator (the instant that it is generated, it travels in the circle at the speed of light), and if it is not used in that instant it is created, it disappears
so by using electricity, we do not create addition waste/pollution, than the existing amount of electricity being generated
in another word, the moment electricity is generated, if the energy is not being used (or picked up), it disappears
so we do not save environment, by not using electricities, since as long as those power plants are operating, whether we use/pick up the electricity they generate or not, have no impact/difference on the envornment
the difference is whether to have the same amount of power plants operating
and volt's usage is so insignificant compared to other major electric appliances existing in the world, that the use of it does not require addition power plants to be built
so it only eliminates the usage on fossile fuel, yet creates NO additional pollution or wastage
thats why its better for the environment than gasoline cars
this car was "featured" in transformers 2 as a blueish purple Chevy volt named Jolt. it was in 2 scenes out of the entire movie which was 2 an a half hours long......Gm isnt goin to make becuz if they were it would have been in more shots an had a speaking part. Like all the other GM vehicles featured in the movie which are headed for the assembly line
You are basing all of your information off a movie? I hope you are kidding. I think the VOLT is real and will be coming in Mid 2010-2011 for consumers who want something truly revolutionary. I'm not a GM fan these days but I truly think that this car might just be the car a lot of people will want to buy including me.
I am so sick of the american auto bashing! Cars like this are an example of their abilities. Not only do they make great performing cars they actually are worth looking at! Go here if you're sick of the anti-american bias!
Yeah, that's great. But they're late to the party by more than a decade. We should have been LEADING this charge, not trying to catch up under the gun as our industry collapses.
The Prius is in its THIRD incarnation, while we're frantically scribbling great ideas on the drawing board trying to save our necks. We let Japanese car companies beat us to the punch on this.
Maybe someday we'll be back where we should be: on top and leading the world. Sadly, that's not where we're at today.
in 1820 a man named fredrick osloft one day he was working in his lab until a ghost came by and killed him the next morning fredrick was nowhere to be seen 100 years later two boys went in the lab as a dare the boys where never seen again where aparently murdered now that u have read this comment tonight when u go to sleep the two boys and fredrick will come and murder you but you can stop this by posting this comment on 5 other videos by midnight im sorry i relly hate these things :'(
Tesla uses laptop lithium ion batteries, then wraps them up with complicated electronics so they don't catch fire.
GM is funding fundamental improvements in li-ion batteries; they have a better chemistry, and GM is testing them 24/7 for 2 years, so they can warranty them 10 years.
GM is pushing the envelope for li-ion batteries, and with an onboard generator, you never have to worry about the batteries draining and stranding you.
Hi, This is Rick Wagoner. I am a complete asshat. We were making electric vehicles in the early 90s. The people loved them so much they begged to buy them. We only leased them, when lease was up, we destroyed them. People begged us to buy them , but we dont care about people only their tax dollars. Now we are pretending to make "green" cars like its new & innovative, but we had this technology 20 years ago. We simply sucked the anus of big oil. I am greedy conman, gimme your money.
Wagoner stepped down. He wasn't even Chief Executive Officer when GM had the EV-1.
EV-1 was a great car, no doubt, the the maintenance costs would be so much, in a few years, the consumer would pay double the amount for maintenance than they did for the car itself.
what about the people who live in apartment buildings and don't have garages to recharge. Concept looks hot though but understand cars need to meet a standard and the concept wasn't going to cut it.
is not that they dont wana build it this way this concept is more realistic when it comes to fuel eficient it needs to be aerodinamic y u think all hybrids look tha same the old model was beautifull but it would not help
i know, the concept car looked incredible, this one looks like the generic shit everyone drives. This is what is going to save them? I'll pass. Toyota or Nissan will come out with something better anyways.
I don't know much about this technology and have been unable to find out any details on the project. Why is it necessary to have an engine as large as a 1.4 L when all it is being used for is to charge batteries? More info on this is greatly appreciated.
there is an MSNBC article that GM had to apologize of not disclosing the true facts.
I have the link but youtube does not allow to paste it here.
the reason why its 1.4 liter from the original 1.0 liter is GM engineers found out there is not enough electricity being generated to run the electric motor when the battery is depleted. GM keeps saying "only to charge the battery" is a lie
This car is lame. Our technology today is far more advanced than what they're producing. The problem is the big oil industry has a choke hold on any progress. Oh yeah and they buy out all the patents on the new battery tech. There will never be any progression with electric vehicles unless we put the oil industry out of business. In other words there will never be an electric only vehicle. :o(
you are a fucking dumbass. you have no idea what you are saying. do some research electric power is not our future. how do we make electricity? exactly.
you are a fucking dumbass. you have no idea what you are saying. do some research electric power is not our future. how do we make electricity? exactly. just name one thing that has nothing to do with gasoline. you cant. we need something like hydrogen as far as i can see this is just a change not progress
wtf gm is back steping a 50mpg hybrid nothing like the 90 mile per charge ev1 a pluug in prius gets 100 mpg wtf did who killed the electric car not say anything ??
The concept displayed in 07 was awesome...HELL YEAH IT WAS. Now we have a Malibu with the "the ass of an Aztek" (thanks cah0n3s!) Not good, not good at all.
The argument for the change in design were the aerodynamics, I think that's bull! Soften SOME line but you cant call this the same car,sucks...
YET we can make a 2010 Camaro, A car that LOOKS a lot like what the Volt should have... MAKES NO SENSE!!!!!
Electric cars are in our close future maybe say.. 5 years. More likely hidrogen will be used in the future. Please do some research before you say electric cars will be the future, not just see a GM comercial.
you're both partly right. The most probable and common drivetrain using alternative fuel in the near future will be an electric motor with a hydrogen fuel cell on-board to power it. Just look at the Honda FCX Clarity. Dont talk down to his views when he's got a point
Unlike a prius the Chevy Volt ONLY runs on battery power in the first 40 miles and will go 100mph the prius uses gas after 20mph so the Chevy is better and after 40miles driven the car still is electric but uses a gas motor to charge battery, again better than Prius, plus the Chevy just looks better.
Everybody please ignore the video respose. That dude is just butthurt over the EV1 fiasco and will never, ever, ever forgive GM for it. To call him extremely bitter is putting it nicely...
The Volt concept car (estimated $30K price) was cool, but the Volt production car (estimated $40K to $48K) is hideous and bland. Nobody is going to pay $40K to $48K for a vehicle that automobile critics have dubbed "Grandma's electric vehicle". You can get TWO Toyota Prius cars for the price of the one Volt.
Very well said... personally I can't believe these execs haven't been lynched yet! Or at least held accountable for their horrible vehicle choices to green light... I mean come on... is this really a good time to bring back the Camaro?
Bob Lutz has done his part to destroy G.M. .
He used the company to make the cars he wanted to see... he never once thought about running G.M. as a healthy company.
the concept was a bajillion times cooler looking than the production model, but i guess it wasn't aerodynamic, and too extreme looking for the elderly.
Here in america we have a very short term memory. Our anger and despair only lasts as soon as we take a s**t. We'll go back to wasting gas soon to the levels before the "Crisis". Look at who we elect, democrats who believe in energy resources that won't be in use til another decade when we could use our oil resources that could be put in use within a few years thus putting the fear in opec gangsters monopoly. We're our own worst enemies. Sad.
GM currently has twice as many vehicles that get 30+mpg than any other auto manufacturer in the world. They also produce the largest segment of trucks, which offsets the car gains. You are still not going to pull a boat, haul lumber and supplies, or carry 8 people with a Prius. These trucks are still, and will always be relevant. And GM wins the best in class fuel economy on those. Toyota and Nissan produce crap trucks, and we don't hear about the 16/17 highway mpg with them. BIAS!
that is wild, but why so far away! almost 2 years? this isn't some space age concept. it's a Hybrid! a gas/electric car that gives you a little more power from the battery.
Come one the EV1 got 100 mpc in '97. this should be out NOW
They need to loose that fugly center console thing the concept had a better looking interior.
The interior on this reversion is just horrid hopefully they will have this fixed before it reaches production maybe finding a designer who didn't apparently start out designing cell phones and urinals for the interior design will be a good start.
Meh, I heard they'll cost a big buck though, could be around $50,000.00, so it's probably just better to stick with gas cars until OPEC raises the price of oil to $500/Barrel.
Is GM saying the Volt will come out in 2011 or that it will be delayed in 2011? GM has done more delaying on electric cars than delivering. I don't believe anything they say!!!!
its a 2011 coming out in 2010. The way cars have always been released. GM is not delaying. They are doing a 3 year test on its monster sized cell phone batter to ensure a warranty can be granted with the vehicle.
GM is not telling the truth about the VOLT, of course; it's just a 40-mile-range EV with range-extender. If GM intended to build it, they could have done so a long time ago. GM is still stopping the EV1 from running.
Watching him plug it in makes me think, holy crap this thing must use more electricity than 2 ovens combined. You will be paying 2.5 MPKW(miles per kilowatt) for this thing or about 25 miles per dollar which is pretty good in my opinion. You might save more money just charging your car with the range extender or even better, turning back your electricity meter for about 5.5 dollars an hour(assuming the volt has a 55KW generator) going at 30 MPG. The volt is just as ready as the prius was...
most american cars right now are shit with the exception of the corvette and mustang. i can't believe chevy ripped off the civic styling on this one. its like they literally took an 08 civic front end and super glued it on.
this is what Rob Peterson of GM said today 9/25/08
"A small amount of power from the generator will recharge the batteries, but most will be used to directly run the car, he said." "GM did not intend to deceive people by maintaining that he motor would only be used to recharge the batteries."
the generatorengine is a 1.4 liter GASOLINE ENGINE
The batteries used in the car will be Li-ion batteries (same as used by Sony laptops - best power per weight batteries available).
Off the shelf Li- ion batteries are cheaper to use but have the potential to cause a multiple point failure problem when wiring all the cells together (these are currently used in the Lotus Telsa). New larger 10 cell batteries are being worked on but are currently about twice the price of the 'off the shelf' models.
The main difference between the Chevy Volt and the Toyota Prius is that the small engine inside the Chevy is only ever used to top up the battery, not to move the car.
That means the experience of driving will always be like driving and electric vehicle, but with the added benefit of being able to recharge on the go rather than having to plug in and wait for hours.
Because the the volt can be plugged into mains electricity for recharging, most short journeys will run on electricity alone.
Not by xxxx date. So sad....(;_;) On that note....
I can't wait for the Aptera 300mpg car?
Under $30,000 and it's registered as a motorcycle...so carpool lane all the way baby!!!
With driver and passenger side airbags, interior and exterior LED lighting, a "solar assisted" climate control system, and an "advanced drive computer" that includes GPS, a rear-view camera, and a complete vehicle diagnostic system. What else could you want!!!
Why? According to the USDOT, 78% of daily commutes and 92% of one-way trips are LESS than 40 miles. The Volt uses NO gas during these trips and electricity is 1/10th the cost of gas per mile!!
The 1st years Volt production will sell out the 1st weekend even if it costs over $40,000 and competes with other premium compact cars with unique style and performance, like the $46,000 BMW 135i or $44,000 Audi A3.
I knew Chevy would find a way to screw it up. The concept had masculine styling unlike its plug-in hybrid competitors. Without this styling advantage, its just another plug-in hybrid and theres no obvious reason to get the Chevy over the Toyota.
Support american jobs, buy a Volt....

Look at the stimulus bill lol.
getalife04 2 years ago
getalife04: You shouldn't believe that the Volt is saving that much resources and energy. The EPA has come out and said that it doesn't back that "230 mpg" in GM's latest ad campaign. It's deceptive. The Volt also requires tremendous amounts of electricity, but GM is only talking miles per gallon. Does an electric scooter get "infinity mpg"?
TranCendenZ 2 years ago
u cant "save up" electricity the same way u save up gasoline
electricity is generated continously, and only last the moment it is generated from the generator (the instant that it is generated, it travels in the circle at the speed of light), and if it is not used in that instant it is created, it disappears
so by using electricity, we do not create addition waste/pollution, than the existing amount of electricity being generated
warset 2 years ago
in another word, the moment electricity is generated, if the energy is not being used (or picked up), it disappears
so we do not save environment, by not using electricities, since as long as those power plants are operating, whether we use/pick up the electricity they generate or not, have no impact/difference on the envornment
the difference is whether to have the same amount of power plants operating
warset 2 years ago
and volt's usage is so insignificant compared to other major electric appliances existing in the world, that the use of it does not require addition power plants to be built
so it only eliminates the usage on fossile fuel, yet creates NO additional pollution or wastage
thats why its better for the environment than gasoline cars

Yeah, that's great. But they're late to the party by more than a decade. We should have been LEADING this charge, not trying to catch up under the gun as our industry collapses.
The Prius is in its THIRD incarnation, while we're frantically scribbling great ideas on the drawing board trying to save our necks. We let Japanese car companies beat us to the punch on this.
Maybe someday we'll be back where we should be: on top and leading the world. Sadly, that's not where we're at today.

Not really. The Model S isn't even production ready.
HakemEX 2 years ago

I am greedy conman, gimme your money.
shwantz3 2 years ago
Wagoner stepped down. He wasn't even Chief Executive Officer when GM had the EV-1.
EV-1 was a great car, no doubt, the the maintenance costs would be so much, in a few years, the consumer would pay double the amount for maintenance than they did for the car itself.

I don't know much about this technology and have been unable to find out any details on the project. Why is it necessary to have an engine as large as a 1.4 L when all it is being used for is to charge batteries? More info on this is greatly appreciated.
KCMDButcher42 3 years ago
there is an MSNBC article that GM had to apologize of not disclosing the true facts.

In other words there will never be an electric only vehicle. :o(

BIAS!

"A small amount of power from the generator will recharge the batteries, but most will be used to directly run the car, he said." "GM did not intend to deceive people by maintaining that he motor would only be used to recharge the batteries."
the generatorengine is a 1.4 liter GASOLINE ENGINE
emforty2 3 years ago
The batteries used in the car will be Li-ion batteries (same as used by Sony laptops - best power per weight batteries available).
Off the shelf Li- ion batteries are cheaper to use but have the potential to cause a multiple point failure problem when wiring all the cells together (these are currently used in the Lotus Telsa). New larger 10 cell batteries are being worked on but are currently about twice the price of the 'off the shelf' models.
maxdogsupreme 3 years ago
The main difference between the Chevy Volt and the Toyota Prius is that the small engine inside the Chevy is only ever used to top up the battery, not to move the car.
That means the experience of driving will always be like driving and electric vehicle, but with the added benefit of being able to recharge on the go rather than having to plug in and wait for hours.
Because the the volt can be plugged into mains electricity for recharging, most short journeys will run on electricity alone.

The Volt is just the Tip of the Spear.
