JANFB, you're exactly right. It took me about 2 weeks to master it. It was quite frustrating at first, but once I got used to using the tip of my thumb to control it, it was awesome. I love this thing.
As Camera Educator I love the Steadicam JR but you (specially you!) need practice! See some more tips and tricks at Google search: CameraEducator Blog
Guys I have the JR and bought a Sony VX 2000 where can I get accessories for it like maybe weights etc Help would be greatly appreciated. Buy the way good Vid. Worked with Kubrick on Eyes wide shut and the steadicam operator was amazing. talked about The Shinning tricycle shot allot
I used the JR just when it came out. I found the video pretty good. The device does require a fair amount of practice, about 2 weeks if you want to be really solid.
The other dork was Ted Churchill, one of the best Steadicem operators ever. Of course the shots look damn smooth with these two operators.
If you want to master a Steadicam, get training. Manuals will not really help. Or at least watch the 'crappy' video. It will take you years to learn what Garrett and Ted are showing in it.
Not meaning to brag but I was shooting as good as, if not better, than what you see in the video in just a few hours. Try it while riding a horse, now that's a challenge.
i own both Steadicam JR and Glidecam 200 and use a vest that is compatible with them both...it takes PRACTICE!! but those shots are hella sweet PLUS if you do indie work you get noticed FAST when using more than just a cool camera! (GL1 and 2)
The results of a steadicam video are 30% the quality of the product and 70% operator skills. I manufacture small steadicams in Argentina and my experience said patience in balancing and practice are the things to do
that dork in the video is garret brown! the man that invented the original steadicam and all the following products. until the company was purchased py tiffen who now makes steadicam units. the JR is the smallest and least usable of all the units. what they didnt tell you was that the guys operating them had thousands of hours doing so and probably shot alot of it with a series 1 or series 2 not the JR
I have to second that. I used to own one of these Steadicam Jr's. It was AWESOME! At first it was very hard to figure out. But once I learned how to balance it with the camera and how to be smooth I shoot some video that was as smooth and clean as anything you see on TV. If you don't like it, send it to me.
I know own a much larger steadicam, but bottem line is, It takes know-how and practice. But they do work very well.
Uhmm...why is this a crappy product exactly? The shots on the instructional vid look pretty damn smooth. Besides the dorks in the video, I'm not sure what your beef is. Maybe you've just got too much time on your hands or shouldn't be using prosumer tools you don't know how to operate.

Do any of you know where I can get the manual either in English or Spanish... Italian? I bought the unit from Ebay but it's useless w/o a manual.

You can get the manuals from the Steadicam website. It'd be nice if someone knows where to get the full training video.
