Christopher Parkening was one of the guitarists whom my guitar teacher back in college, Charles Brotman, thought highly of. Now that I'm a Christian it brings me joy to find that he is a brother in Christ Jesus. What a blessing. Praise Jesus!

He built his technique and artistry without any awareness of the Lord's hand on him...and ultimately burned out and quit playing. It was after he came to the Lord that he changed his vision for his playing. His story is very interesting. You might be interested in learning more about him. Great playing by one of Segovia's best students. Not only a great guitarist but I believe two time world fly fishing champion! So I think there is something to be said about discipline transferring to other areas in your life. I am sure CP can play some really good Jazz, or Rock or Blues based on his knowledge of music and theory. I also admire his stand on serving the Lord, it would be easy for him to not say a thing and get a bigger audiance. I enjoy listening to Megadeath,and George Benson
Power to him. To be renowned and hold faith is a difficult task. As a guitarist, there aren't many to aspire to in terms of skill and faith. Him and Phil Keaggy are among my favorites.

What a beautiful performance of this great hymn. I find his incredible gift, and Christian testimony inspiring. J.S. Bach once said the final aim of all music is none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul. This accomplishes both.
4th movement on Glorious things of thee,if you can play it you can play anything.CP is a master in every way.but he doesnt do S American,guitarists preferences I suppose however I believe it should be in ones repertoire.
For myself when I am learning certain classical pieces I use CP as the benchmark, then again my favorite electric guitar album is Hendrix' Band of Gypsys, so just another opinion.
And at 1:43, CP rushes the cheeerish part. Such a pity because that chord change is really beautiful as it goes into the B7 and to Em but instead of at least keeping it in time, he rushes it! Thats like the ultimate no no. Slowing is fine but rushing a tempo is bad.
He's a good technician. His tone sucks compared to say Segovia's. It's thin and weak. Not strong and woody sounding. That's my main gripe. If you listen to all his recordings then go listen to Segovia's.... Segovia has life and spark and tone that sounds rich and deep. It may be hard to hear this if you haven't listened to a lot of it but compare side by side and it becomes much clearer.
Try listening to a recording that has good quality, like "Parkening plays Bach". I dont know what Segovia records your listening to but I'm not hearing what your talking about.

Parkening has made his mark in the history of guitar. His younger years were his best and his recordings are all amazing and masterly. He´s often underrated by other guitarrists (especially academics), but that´s out of envy. We should just consider the musician and what he does, not criticize him for his religious beliefs.
Absolute beautiful, I learned this from his book based on his album "Simple Gifts" but never could get his fantastic performance, he's my all time favorite classical guitarist's.

How did you know that Segovia was not an ignorant? I have been told that Parkening these days can't and doesn't even want to play for his students. All he does at his lessons,is he puts in his CDs. When he does demonstrate any technique to his students, he strums his way through a piece. Rasquados(strumming the guitar) was something that always displeased Segovia.

I think it's unfortunate that people who believe in God so often vilify atheists and agnostics -- not to mention people whose religious faith is different from their own. It's equally appalling when atheists and agnostics tar all people of faith with the same brush, thinking that they're all bigots when, in fact, many of us are not.
Atheism and agnosticism are legitimate views -- and so is having faith in God. The freedom to believe as one chooses is a precious right, hard won.

And at 1:43, CP rushes the cheeerish part. Such a pity because that chord change is really beautiful as it goes into the B7 and to Em but instead of at least keeping it in time, he rushes it! Thats like the ultimate no no. Slowing is fine but rushing a tempo is bad.

He's a good technician. His tone sucks compared to say Segovia's. It's thin and weak. Not strong and woody sounding. That's my main gripe. If you listen to all his recordings then go listen to Segovia's.... Segovia has life and spark and tone that sounds rich and deep. It may be hard to hear this if you haven't listened to a lot of it but compare side by side and it becomes much clearer.

Parkening has made his mark in the history of guitar. His younger years were his best and his recordings are all amazing and masterly. He´s often underrated by other guitarrists (especially academics), but that´s out of envy. We should just consider the musician and what he does, not criticize him for his religious beliefs.

How did you know that Segovia was not an ignorant? I have been told that Parkening these days can't and doesn't even want to play for his students. All he does at his lessons,is he puts in his CDs. When he does demonstrate any technique to his students, he strums his way through a piece. Rasquados(strumming the guitar) was something that always displeased Segovia.
