  • i first heard about fan death while i was in korea when i was in 1st or 2nd grade during the summer. it was hot and we were sleeping at my mom's friend's home. so we turned on the fan in the room. then my mom's friend came in and told my mom that if we didn't open the window with the fan on while we sleep, we could die. i was shocked and i didn't know what to believe. her friend also said an old couple died under these circumstances. for many years, i always opened the window at night with a fan

  • jaja mike vos tambien tenes un thread de youtube! con violencia de gente con dos dedos de frente escupiendose en sus sendas caras virtuales! salud!

  • @popskism jajajjaja si, es inevitable.

  • "fool, listen to my words"

that phrase is the new lol.

  • I sleep with the fan on all of the time

  • I have found that about 90% of Koreans believe this myth ha ha ha It is because of their education. They aren't taught to think things through. Their education is more about remembering stuff. If you tell a western person about fan death, they will just laugh about it. This is all due to the difference in education. That is also the reason why they study English for 6 years and still can't speak it. Hopefully the government in Korea will realise how crap the education is and change it fast...

  • Thanks for sharing that misinformation with the rest of the world. I like how you managed to criticise the education system of one of the worlds quickest growing economies as well as slip in a racist remark about their linguistic skills. From your comment I assume that you live in America and you have never been to Korea. Please don't reply unless you want to tell me that my deductions are correct.

  • @enoxib: Actually you are completely wrong. Korea's GDP growth is currently ranked as 122 in the world. Also, I worked in Korea for years to improve their education system. Saying that they learnt English for 6 years and still can't speak it isn't racist at all. Maybe you need to look up the word racism. It's common knowledge. Korea doesn't have one university in the top 100 because their teaching methods are outdated and ineffective.

  • @joncarolyn Korea is classified as a high-income economy by the World Bank, an advanced economy by the IMF and CIA and a developed market by the FTSE Group. It has a very high HDI, measuring particularly high in the Education Index, where it is ranked first in Asia and seventh worldwide.

  • @enoxib: Wrong. Google the top universities in the world and you will find that Japan is way ahead of Korea. Korean teaching methods are outdated. Until recently, most teachers were still beating students as a way to get them to study. Any teacher that beats their students doesn't have a clue about teaching methodology. Also, if Korean schools are so good, why can't they speak English after 6 years of study and have to travel to western countries/the Philippines to get what they missed out on?

  • Korea is a land where appearances matter.......fan death is just a cover story for suicides.

  • you can survive "prolonged fan exposure" if you consume 100g of kimchi everyday! eating butterflies, before bed, helps too!

  • That makes perfect sense!

  • @arfer: Wrong, fan death is a classic example of the kind of hurry hurry mindset they have and the low quality of journalism in Korea. Korean news outlets report things without investigating them.

  • Comment removed

  • @joncarolyn Firstly it is racist to make such a sweeping generalisation of an entire race. Secondly you have completely fabricated the statistics which you have quoted. Finally I don't believe you have left America once in your life and you're the type of person I expect regularly frequents the Fox news channel. Typical Yanker wanker.

  • @enoxi: It's you that is the wanker. I am not even from the US. Or Canada. I lived in korea for a long time and have worked in their education sector and taught them in my own country. I didn't make any stats up. I also didn't make any racist comments. You need to look up racism in a dictionary.I generalised about Koreans and their education. Something which is accepetd as being true among most people.

  • @enoxib: Here is the main meaning of Racism: Hatred or intolerance of another race or other races or; a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others or; a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering a doctrine. Generalising about Koreans doesn't constitute racism. Korean isn't a race, they are part of the asian race.

  • Fuck off you patronising pendantic cunt with your racist misinformed bullshit

  • @enoxib: That's not very nice! You can't win an argument so you resort to swearing at me? An internet tough guy huh? I lived in Korea for a lot of years and know exactly how the education works there. So you can't call it misinformation. And after I showed you the meaning of racism, you can't really call me racist. My wife is Asian. Do you think that I have racist feelings toward her and my kids? I'd try picking an argument at the local retard home if I were you, that way you might just win...

  • Hey :D I'm Superman. I was just flying around Youtube researching the bad guys >.> when i found your video and thought i'd comment. Ahh but i forgot Im going on a picnic with SpiderMan gotta go pack some Kyrptonite and jelly :) We are going to get some whales D: And not those tap things D: >.> evil taps So as i leave i need you to do my tune ~~~ i'll start it of ;) err duh~duhhh~dduhh........

  • Nice film~

    The girl is beautiful.

    How could I meet her?

  • 간지뽀대난다

  • Nice. Good luck with the first year in the US. It was nice chatting with you.

  • The film was short and sweet. The idea is absurd and the only reason a myth like this is perpetuated is because ignorant common folks babble about it without any research being done.

They claim that the newspaper is a viable source of information regarding scientific peer-reviewed studies. Laughable.

I live in Korea and have sat my face in front of a fan many times while my windows were shut. I have yet to be told I will die from doing this from any other country despite Korea.

  • Did she feed him some American beef as well? ;)

  • niceuhhhhh

  • wat da fuck?

  • 지난 금요일에 아주 더웠어요. 그래서, 선풍기 사용했어요. 모두더 학생이 교실에서 떠났어요. 선생님이 교실에서 입어서, 교실에서 도망하고봤어요.

    아주 재미있었어요.

Sorry if my Korean isn't that good. I'm still learning.

  • other than the first sentence it makes no sense

  • Did you know that if people listen to other people eating for three minutes it causes "food rage" and they'll stop watching a youtube video? It's true!

  • Nice film.

  • Fan death is a myth with absolutely no truth to it. It's an indication of how with ignorant people, rumours can propagate and become self-verifying. For example, if they find someone dead from a stroke in front of a fan, they assume the fan caused the stroke. Heart attack and fan? Fan cause the heart attack...

I'm Canadian, and I've slept with a fan on hundreds of times. Rather than accept it, Koreans just expand their delusion to explain it away - "obviously", they have a different physiology!

  • Nope.

A fan has neither the power nor the ability to lower your temperature that far. They only move air, they don't chill it much. And your body's temperature - EVEN WHEN YOU'RE ASLEEP - is self-regulating. It's an unconscious function, not a conscious one.

And even in a situation where your body temperature COULD get dangerously low, you'd get uncomfortable and wake up before it would get that bad.

  • a fan does.

  • A fan does what?

Hey guys, did shinviroz just drop dead in the middle of writing his comment or something?

Maybe it was the fan's fault....

  • lol @ 'hey guys'

  • @shinviroz: You're on drugs.

  • This movie touched me deeply, thank you. My friend died this week from fan death.

    RIP Eric Kim 1990-2008

    You were a good human.

  • lol funny vid. Sounds like nonsense alrite. Like a fan does not take away oxygen... And a normal person will simply be awaken if they are having such extreme difficulties breathing.

  • ive slpet with fans (many diferent ones) in my room for over 25 years... WTF Lol

  • I think u have to do it with windows and door closed. Thats 1 version i heard somewhere.

  • great video! my mom's been telling me this my whole life

  • I'm Korean, I think fan death is bullcrap.

    My parents believe it, though.

  • @rawnoodles10 amen

  • the sad thing is that 80% of korean's even educated ones who hold proper jobs and went to university believe this stupid myth..

  • Totally false. But who are we to judge? I'm sure American beliefs would be met with equal hilarity in Korea.

  • such as?

  • Christianity?

  • fan death is bullshit!

    electric fans never cau

  • se death!!!

I always use electric fans whenever which part of the day! even when I sleep with the fan in front of my face!

  • obviously fans only cause death in Korea.

  • one never really knows...anything is possible...in Korea. Funny short. do you currently live in Korea?

  • haha. nope, i've lived in argentina all my life. this was filmed in a set in argentina as well.

  • It's an urban legend. Like "people use ten percent of their brains", or "lemmings kill themselves", or "masturbation causes blindness", or "there is a God".

  • there is a god.

  • Yes! And Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, Boogie Man, UFO's probing hicks in Wyoming, Harry Potter, and Jesus...

  • Based on what evidence?

  • Definitely, lol.

I've been sleeping with a Fan on almost every summer.

  • me too, nothing to worry about ;)

i just wanted to make fun of this urban legend.

  • This is as funny as hell! It would be really nice if the clip was a bit shorter like 3 minutes. I trully appreciate for your effort to your film.

Just to let you know, your video is linked in wikipedia and can be found 'Fan death'.

  • oh shi----

  • Kill your fan... before it kills you.

  • fan death kills!!!!

  • I laughed alot more at this than I should have

  • It's supposed to be funny (at least for me it is) ;)

  • I think it would be funnier for her to strangle him and then put a fan in front of the corpse.

  • that would be fun, but i tried to to portray a completely ridiculous, unexpected and unreal but funny situation. like... you won't expect him to die, right? it's just a myth.

and yeah... i'm korean-american (the director/actor) and i've slept just too many times to prove this myth wrong =P

  • Yeah, I understand. I just thought the humour would be even sharper if she used his own dumb belief to cover up his murder.

Not to mention, that way, the people who actually believe in this myth will get the joke. The way it really is, it sorta supports their beliefs! :D

  • i actually like the idea, but it would be nicer for a feature film, having more time to develop a reason to murder him (since in this short, it's supposed to be a prank gone wrong).

anyway, thanks for the input! ;)

  • Always welcome.

  • wow, nice... is it true? there is no way..

  • hola, soy daniel chang :) hermano de david, nose si te acordas. jaja muy bueno el corto! re gracioso el final jaja

  • Of course! How could I not have guessed...?!?

  • This is a really cool short video...very true to life in Korea. Cheers!

  • Thanks. It was filmed in Argentina, by the way ;)

  • amazing cinematography dude... well done! do you go to the Fuc in buenos aires?

  • Gracias! Si, estoy en 3er año en la FUC.

  • muy bueno

  • hahahahahahah!!! hilarious!! I seriously laughed so much it hurt.

  • what camera did u use to shot this film?

  • i used a sony hdr-hc1 with a letus35 adapter.

  • but this adapter works for it self, or u still need a 35mm lens to put on?

  • it's an adapter to use a 35mm photo lens for shallow depth of field. it takes either canon fd or nikon ai lens. google it.

also, the image is heavily post-producted (color correction, etc).

  • Well done! I really enjoyed this.
