I just use my ps3 to do this it support all major audio, video, and image formats and no proprietary software required.

@Railroadmaster I use my PS3 to do this too but what really pisses me off is that the PS3 won't play a MPEG4. Why the hell doesn't it support MPEG4?? Do you know of a way to get them to play on the PS3? I can get one to play for about 10 or 15 seconds but then it stops and gives me some stupid "network error" message. I use "PS3 Media Server" to stream video to my PS3 from my laptop.

i did something better. i have a complete network and everybody puts their vids, photos and other things on the server. I have a computer connected to the network and the tv so i can look at all of that ! it even does microsoft word and i can control it with a remote control and other accessories.

Heh. Hack this with XBMC and/or Boxee and most of the problems Mr Pogue has aren't an issue, except the whole 1080p thing where you really need a Mac Mini to pull it off - more processing power there for video decoding.
