Uh, that's not true. The CDMA technology used by networks like Verizon simply are not capable of some of the same things that GSM networks are capable of. GSM (T-Mobile, AT&T, to name two) supports voice and data simultaneously. CDMA CANNOT.

actually, att's 3g coverage has a lot more coverage than what verizon is saying. Verizon is using its 3g and 2g map which is a lot more coverage than what is actually shown while att's maps only show 3g coverage. If you join the 3g and 2.5g coverage for att, it is relatively the same coverage except in the mountains in california. People who want a good cell phone company care a lot about the small cities, not the big cities. Showing postcards from big cities doesn't make me want to switch to AT&T. I like Verizon because I get good reception in the small towns, not just the big cities that every phone company can get signal in.

Also, having used EvDO extensively on Sprint and a time or two on Verizon, I can say definitively that connection quality is consistently better than AT&T, though uncongested AT&T is significantly faster than typical Sprint/Verizon (and T-Mobile will be faster than everyone combined in a few months...just like WiMAX is now).
its actually all of att coverage it includes the 2g and edge network plus the 3g coverage map enjoy not being able to be on the droid and not being able to access google maps and talk at the same time dude soungs like fun to me not
Anyway, CDMA 1x does indeed do data; I would know since I pushed a couple of gigs overnight on a 1x connection back before my town of 10,000 had 3G from anyone (AT&T just got there, Sprint was first, Verizon has several months later). I know it was 1x because speeds were about 3x what I could get on dialup at the time, vs. the 30x I get over EvDO or the 20-60x I get over 3G...or the 2-4x I get over EDGE.
I hear the "you can't surf and talk on Verizon" argument all the time, yet can't think of a single time when that would benefit me. Give me one that isn't vomited straight from Apple's iPhone commercial and I might consider it viable. BTW, you need. 3G connection to do that so you're very limited as to where you can do that anyway!

Here's the thing: Verizon has more CDMA 1x coverage than AT&T has voice coverage of any type. There are some areas that AT&T covers that Verizon doesn't, but there are more areas that Verizon covers and AT&T doesn't. It all depends on your area.
Hopefully Verizon will show their voice coverage on a national map as a "back atcha" to AT&T.

T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon all cover 97% of americans, and even though T-mo has the least number of towers, they still have roaming agreements so that "coverage" by itself isn't an issue. AT&T trying to argue they "have coverage" is not effective. Also, 3% of 304,059,724 is still 9,121,792 not covered.

Verizon wasn't lying but but they did spread a false message. You see when the average consumer hears "3G coverage," they have no idea what that means. They assume that it means their phone wont work in those areas, which is false. AT&T did a good thing for themselves letting people know that phone service will not suffer because of 3G. Data transfer is a whole different deal though.

just to put this in perspective;
there are 19,355 cities in the US, and AT&T only covers 9,400 of them; that is less than half.
AT&T covers 97% of the PEOPLE in the USA, not the LANDSPACE; big difference..
in the major cities; there is little difference in network capabilities, but outside major cities; AT&T is awful. the coverage is spotty.
AT&T is faster than Verizon, but if you can't get service, that speed is meaningless..
*lesson; go with Verizon, these commercials are stupid.

Uh, that's not true. The CDMA technology used by networks like Verizon simply are not capable of some of the same things that GSM networks are capable of. GSM (T-Mobile, AT&T, to name two) supports voice and data simultaneously. CDMA CANNOT.

actually, att's 3g coverage has a lot more coverage than what verizon is saying. Verizon is using its 3g and 2g map which is a lot more coverage than what is actually shown while att's maps only show 3g coverage. If you join the 3g and 2.5g coverage for att, it is relatively the same coverage except in the mountains in california. If you just show verizon's 3g coverage map, there too is no coverage in south dakota. i'm sory, but you're all wrong. GO ATT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@jonathanshanahan MTPCS doesn't have 3G. They've been too busy changing names and networks to invest in that. Also, AT&T is buying some parts of Alltel. Other parts are staying "blue" Alltel and not going Verizon. Please get your facts straight. kthxbai

Also, having used EvDO extensively on Sprint and a time or two on Verizon, I can say definitively that connection quality is consistently better than AT&T, though uncongested AT&T is significantly faster than typical Sprint/Verizon (and T-Mobile will be faster than everyone combined in a few months...just like WiMAX is now).

Anyway, CDMA 1x does indeed do data; I would know since I pushed a couple of gigs overnight on a 1x connection back before my town of 10,000 had 3G from anyone (AT&T just got there, Sprint was first, Verizon has several months later). I know it was 1x because speeds were about 3x what I could get on dialup at the time, vs. the 30x I get over EvDO or the 20-60x I get over 3G...or the 2-4x I get over EDGE.

Have service from everyone but Verizon right now (Sprint is my main phone, AT&T is my aircard at the moment because its 3G IS faster where I need it than Sprint and Verizon though there are places where AT&T really falls down on the job, T-Mobile prepaid for GSM voice). Here's the thing: Verizon has more CDMA 1x coverage than AT&T has voice coverage of any type. There are some areas that AT&T covers that Verizon doesn't, but there are more areas that Verizon covers and AT&T doesn't. It all depends on your area.
Hopefully Verizon will show their voice coverage on a national map as a "back atcha" to AT&T.

T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon all cover 97% of americans, and even though T-mo has the least number of towers, they still have roaming agreements so that "coverage" by itself isn't an issue. AT&T trying to argue they "have coverage" is not effective. Also, 3% of 304,059,724 is still 9,121,792 not covered.

@JoeTNoonan27 They didn't lie about anything. They said that AT&T has crappy 3G coverage, which is true. The coverage map AT&T is talking about above is Edge coverage. Not 3G. No ones lying.

Verizon wasn't lying but but they did spread a false message. You see when the average consumer hears "3G coverage," they have no idea what that means. They assume that it means their phone wont work in those areas, which is false. AT&T did a good thing for themselves letting people know that phone service will not suffer because of 3G. Data transfer is a whole different deal though.
