Interestingly similar to large swathes of academia, where the choice and nurturing of one's PhD students are probably the most consequential decisions the average professor makes (they go on to propagate their professor's methodology, ideas, etc, and influence their own PhD students). Many schools of thought are successful because of good personnel rather than groundbreaking thought. (Both are important, but having only second means the school ends when founder retires or dies.)
Maybe this is the right way-to promote smart people is equal to growth yourself!
