I recommend syrian/teddy bear hamsters instead of dwarf, because syrians like to be held and don't bite as much. Dwarf hamsters are not as kind, and jump out of your hands more often.
@Hamsterdance2011 You should leave him/her in their new cage for a couple of days to get used to it, then when they are comfortable with their surroundings you can start to pick her up :)

Orrrrrrr you could pet it gently first and then pick it up and hold it. That's how I do with my hamster. I always get her used to my hands because she jumps if I don't.

You should speak firstly with the hamster, give it some healthy food out of a hand, that is not moving! Maby the hamster trys so climb on you hand, then you can put your hand a bit up. When he is scared, down again. So a hamster will maby get good handling, but especially the little hamster types can sometimes never be open to humans. You should respect that

If you want to buy a hamster that most likely wont bite, get a winter white hamster~ (it has a stripe down its back & it's feet are furry, not the ones at :12 though, i think those are campbell's dwarves) Go to the pet store & ask the store clerk who works with the hamster which ones are nicer. My winter white hamster never bit me before, but he nibbles & licks my finger sometimes cause it smells like food, but it's doesn't hurt; it's just like when a dog nibbles.
@7410jojo put him down if he bites you. If you continue, he's just going to bite you again. You could offer him some treats & then pet him while he is munching away. I have this treat that is pretty much like a block of seeds glued together with stuff & i let my hamster chomp on it while I pet him. It might help.

you should rub the sawdust or whatever on your hands before holding your hamster. let it sniff your hands and it gets comfortable because of the familiar scent. i think this way it won't bite.
Ergh... Don't start off by snatching your hamster out of his cage and holding it while it's squirming unless you want a missing finger. Or two. When you tame your hamster, try to do it in the evening when it's more active. Start off by letting your hamster sniff your hands, and getting used to your scent. Once your hamster starts getting comfortable with that you can place some food into your palm. Let your hamster eat from your hands. Later it'll sit in your hand. After, you can pick him up.
I have a hamtster and had two before... so i know how ( according to my experiences and hamsters ) they work:P If you dont know how your hamster ''works'' cuz all of them are individuals and feel comfortable with different ''holding'', try to notice how it feels most comfortable with. @PhoenixWingsGuitar usually a hamster gives out broken microphone sound when they are afraid. Your hamster probably is not use to getting handled by human yet. You might want to start slow, and handing food to your hamster daily, to gain some trust. They are pretty friendly actually. Good luck!

i had a hamster, once i was gonna pick him up he bit my finger then i quickly got my hand out of the cage and he didnt let go of it he only decided to let go of it when my hand was out so i accidently threw him down the stairs =X
hey i did this two days ago and it works. But i did it differently. IF YOU ARE SCARED TO HOLD THEM BECAUSE THEY BITE, then use socks for hands. after they get used to going to one pawn to another they will get use to it. My hamster was smart and wanted to find a different way than the everlasting pawn stairs lol. Then take your hand out of one sock and try it again. repeat the process. Now my Snoozer aint afraid of me =D

@JojishiChan You shouldn't have a hamster if you have cats. Cats WILL try to kill your hamster. I suggest you put your hamster in a place where your cats can't reach, neither the hamster.

pick it up. You have to at least hold them around 10 minutes or so at least everyday so they would be use to your scent and be hand trained.

My hamster likesto jump but is now very quiet because I took him on my hand for some playing and he was in a day or 4 very social. :)

I just got a hamster today for my birthday, but its acting really strange, it always has its eyes closed and moves around her cage like that, rarely opening her eyes, and she keeps doing a weird sound, like a broken microphone, and it wont stop trying to bite me, please help, what should i do? Its a golden hamster and its 4 months old, please help :(

@PhoenixWingsGuitar usually a hamster gives out broken microphone sound when they are afraid. Your hamster probably is not use to getting handled by human yet. You might want to start slow, and handing food to your hamster daily, to gain some trust. They are pretty friendly actually. Good luck!

cute!,i now have 3 hamster (rushies) 2 are brothers,7 weeks old and chipy a boy hammy but is nealy 1 year old and hes hudge but he's allways wanting to eat.Not food or his cage,me, i have 4 bite marks on my fingers whats rong with him? shall i take him to the vets???

like she said guys first hold them over the cage but,i highly recommend if the hamster bites you still need to hold him/her so tht she/he will get the pleasure use a soft pair of gloves tht you do not wear a lot and use those to hold him/her to train ur hamster not to bite start them out young like a baby let them grown until a certain age start holding them and then everything will be ok hamsters may seem mean but there not there the cutest lil things ever i love rodents

i had a hamster, once i was gonna pick him up he bit my finger then i quickly got my hand out of the cage and he didnt let go of it he only decided to let go of it when my hand was out so i accidently threw him down the stairs =X

hey i did this two days ago and it works. But i did it differently. IF YOU ARE SCARED TO HOLD THEM BECAUSE THEY BITE, then use socks for hands. after they get used to going to one pawn to another they will get use to it. My hamster was smart and wanted to find a different way than the everlasting pawn stairs lol. Then take your hand out of one sock and try it again. repeat the process. Now my Snoozer aint afraid of me =D

Whenever I (slowly) put my hand in her cage she runs towards it sniffing then rubbing against it. Owo she only bites me when i stick my fingers through the cage wires though ^o^;

Yes cup it one hand to each side then pick it up but beware young hamsters can be frightened at first.

@JojishiChan You shouldn't have a hamster if you have cats. Cats WILL try to kill your hamster. I suggest you put your hamster in a place where your cats can't reach, neither the hamster.

@121itzel a guinea pig if your afraid of losing it or having it bite you, cuz it wont bite withouth trying to nible softly and its bigger and slower than a hamster (and also not a night animal so youl probably wont wake it )

my hamster is a wittle angel. her name is princess and she bit my mom on accident. because she was hungry. shes only a baby and shes sleeping so ADORABLY! ^_^ (P.S it didnt hurt my mom at all. she didnt even say ouch. ^_^

guys never pick up a hamster with to big teeth or in a brand new cage you will get bit or scratched but talk to it in a soft voice nevr ignore in advice for syrian hammyz

U can just wear gloves and pick them up beacause that way they will be used to being helled and it won't make u scared beacause it can't bite ur real hand it worked winders for me and my hammy were bff's now
