The guitar is made by Mick McGuire from Valley Arts. It´s shaped like a 335 but it´s made from a solid block of wood with routed chambers and a glued on top. Carlos Rios owned a similar one in creme colour.
I noticed the guitar also not a Gibson, possibly an Ibanez.Back in the 80'sIbanez attempted to approach the hot player of that era with a signature model.
This is off of the Larry Carlton album "Strikes Twice", he actually sings some on the album. It's very good, I still listen to it, it's got some great guitar work on it.
which takes more talent? shredding or play a well composed piece of music like this. I KNOW that the composed takes WAY more skill. Sorry JP, GG, and the rest, Larry just simply has more talent :-)
Jibbers is right Krelbar. And we can't all be "Larry Carltons" that's why we look for our own styles. Larry is an act that I haven't seen anyone who can copy him in true eactness. And he is a legendary genius and my fav
Larry makes me want to burn my guitar and play dulcimer. I'll never get that fluidity, no matter how much practice. Some people have it, i don't...Oh well.
well no offense, but I don't care where he got ANY of these licks from. All I care about is that he does them so extremely well. This is an extremely AWESOME performance by Mr. Larry Carlton! It's no wonder why he's still my favorite guitarist. :-)
Anyone who listens to LC knows that the main line is Johnny Smith . It's what he does for the rest of the tune that gives him ownership and creative rights as an American original . He commands the knowledge & language of music to his advantage and the results are a one of a kind Guitarist / Musician/ Composer / Arranger with over 45+ years in the industry . What a gift !!!
Go to Mosaic Records. On the top left side select Jazz Guitar. The selection at the bottom of that page will be Johnny Smith. On the right side hit the link for "Jaguar." This is an adendum/retraction to my original post. If it's true, LC copied the riff, not the entire song "Jaguar."
Everybody rips off everybody! We are the sum total of everything we have seen, heard, or experienced. You know for shure he heard "Jaguar?" To to say that he "ripped off" the riff to call his own is jumping to a conclusion that you have no evidence for. I have played riffs I thought were mine, later to hear someone else do it! As the Bible says, "nothing new under the sun."
I agree with adjazz. Do take the time to listen to the main riff of "Jaguar" by Johnny Smith. It is the same. Larry Carlton is an amazing guitar player/musician and will always be. Truly one of the greatest.
if it's a rip-off then Larry would have be sued! But, I think you're just saying that to try to make LC look like less of a pro, but it's NOT working. LARRY CARLTON is THE REAL DEAL! HE WAS GREAT THEN AND IS STILL GREAT! If you have jealous issues adjazz, I suggest you see a psychiatrist :~
No matter how many times I watch this, I am blown away by Larrys speed and at the same time, his finesse!! My jaw drops, and I think of taking the axe to my axe! LOL!!!
Man I love this tune! I bought the CD when it first came out! Thanks for posting it Siouxsies as LC is still my very favorite ALL TIME guitarist. PEACE MAN!
Thanks for posting this! This from the German T.V. show, "Ohne Filter", this is L.C. at his best!! WOW, double WOW!!!! The King of emotion and feeling on the guitar! Thanks very very much, I'm a giant fan of his!! Take care! geetarnut.

I love how they change down the tempo from 4/4 to 1/4 (?). Anyway, very HOT! The rhythm section looks like they're having a great time.
00s00m 2 years ago
It's all in 4/4 but the middle section is speeded up. From 2:00 on it is played with a swing feel.

to call this tune "strikes twice" shows that it's larry's tribute. think about it. lightning indeed strikes twice...
steaver1959 3 years ago
The "Strikes Twice" is a reference to the fact that this was the title song to his second album.
