@xXyourmomsballsXx i agree with you, this song sounds a lot better when DTP performs it live. Devin himself said in many interviews that the album itself suffered from a lot of mixing problems. He even considers this album as his worst work to date.
@MetalJassim lol true, and this song sure does, even Namaste is a head trip unlike any other. this is my 2nd fave album by Dev, first is Ocean Machine and thats only because it was my first intro to his music. And my life hasn't been the same since hehehe
@Sonicthehedgehog73 I've met my fair share of rage though. I explained to someone that Alien was my favorite SYL album, and by extension my favorite Devin album. The guy said "Alien is crap, and their best album is SYL", and when I tried to explain my case, he got so pissed that he said "I NEVER LIKED ALIEN AND I NEVER WILL". To be fair, I give respect to all of Devin's albums, despite finding some of them to be quite boring, because he puts a lot of effort into his work.
@Bassbait I do like Alien. A lot. It has many of my favourite songs on there (Shitstorm, Love? and We Ride stand out, for me.) however, I find that I enjoy The New Black more overall. The mixing on Alien is superior, though. SYL is nice, although mixing is fairly sloppy. Relentless, Rape Song, Aftermath... so many classics on there. But The New Black and Alien are my favourite SYL albums. I also dig Deconstruction and Ziltoid. Addicted rocks, too.
@obviouslypepsi Alien is great. I think The New Black is too incoherent. It felt like Devin didn't know quite what he wanted to do. Many songs off that album feel like they belong in his solo work. Alien is the most "SYL" of all of his albums. It sums up the band best. It's also my favorite musically, lyrically, production-wise and artistically. It's a genius album that happens to be crazy.
I dont know if I can pick a version to be better, of the old and new version. I do like the rawness of this original version though. They're both great in my book :)
An incredibly intuitive song from one of metals greatest talents today... To me this is a classic song directed towards the inner struggle with monotheism and free will, within the artist. The ebb and flow of love and desparation.... I am prolly reading way too much into it though hahaha
@ibanezsam4 Current version is better period. There are more samples, or at least, they are louder so we can distinguish more. The only bummer with the new version is that it's slower... Maybe to accomodate the drummer? I don't know.
@mushrmhd6661 Yeah, I know, I love Ryan and his playing is tight as hell. I still don't know why Devin slowed down the song live... Not saying it's because of Ryan, I'm merely saying it's a possibility.
He played this at the BTBAM tour. It was pretty good live. Overall, I think dtp sounds better on record but then again they weren't the main set. I'd like to see them headline soon.
I thought he sounded more or less the same. Granted, different stuff at different times, but that's to be expected. He's an unbelievable live performer, in my opinion.
I had the liberty to see Devin and his Project headline and in my opinion it was one of the best shows I have been to. Varied setlist, live energy and oh course the Townsend-style humour.
@Hellview12a yeah I just saw him last night in Chicago, and I was like, oh my god I know this, but the title didn't come to my thoughts. Just hearing his voice coming so high and clear in real life, it was probably the best song I've seen live.
I really hope this is one of the songs that Dev intends to play come the new tour ! I would love to see RVP beat the hell out of his drum kit on this tune !
I can't believe I've listened to SYL for 3 years and never checked out his other projects. I feel like I committed a crime. This song is so powerful I don't even have words to describe what I felt when it started.
@meshugganaut he paints a complete 360 degrees panoramic view of vast soundscape engulfing me into pure bliss..thats how i feel when i listen to his songs.
Devin is my favorite musician. His vocals are incredible and his guitar playing is also amazing. It's been a long time since I've heard this album and I'm glad I'm reminded. Everything he puts out is an inspiration to me.
this song brought me back. thank you dev
