Opening fire to defend themselves would have resulted in very few Iranian deaths, and all of theirs. The Iranian ships had heavy machine guns, and weapons such as RPGs, the British boat had just rifles and MGs.
They made the right choice. Maybe if they'd been defending a high value objective in a war it might have been an option to risk it.

Your argument makes no sense. He saved 14 guys in the middle of an intense firefight. Just because you have arty and air support doesn't mean you earn the medal that much less, and certainly doesn't reduce your risk of getting killed.

They were surrounded and out gunned by numerous Iranian ships, all of which i believe were larger than theirs. Opening fire to defend themselves would have resulted in very few Iranian deaths, and all of theirs. The Iranian ships had heavy machine guns, and weapons such as RPGs, the British boat had just rifles and MGs.
They made the right choice. Maybe if they'd been defending a high value objective in a war it might have been an option to risk it.

@Saxonsoldiers the mission is everything...that's what they teach you in the corps...the women in the marine corps are POGs not infantrymen nor combatants...you are talking about basic combat training...but marines after boot camp go threw infantry school and the best have a change to go threw the basic recon course which is all together longer and harder then what royal marines go threw...

Looking at how this person won the medal of honour i noticed he was in a platoon with his Coy and a Battalion as back up .He also had air and ground arty support ..Around 500 men to help him .
These Navy guys had a dinghy,small arms and nothing else ...i Reckon he should give them HIS medal as i know who i respect more ...RULE BRITANNIA!!!

Your argument makes no sense. He saved 14 guys in the middle of an intense firefight. Just because you have arty and air support doesn't mean you earn the medal that much less, and certainly doesn't reduce your risk of getting killed.

When Americans deploy to fight they are armed with more than an inflatable and rifles. This captured crew was equiped for policing iraq waters for bouarding commercial shipping. The Iranians had heavy MG on their boats. This so called american hero is sat behind a desk where as the Royal navy crew was at the time having guns pointed at them.

Everyone has a breaking point, so I don't blame the sailors for that, it just seems like their breaking point was early for a US or Russian soldier. I agree with sergeant Quarles in 1980 that US imperialism mistreated Iran before the Ayatollah came to power, but don't see how the US is mistreating them now. I think it is ok to criticize the US on foreign TV, but if I was captured in a military situation then as a soldier, I would resist, since I wouldn't join the army unless I agreed with it.

We fought in the first world war from 1914 to 1918, when did the spineless yanks turn up? 1917 only after the Germans were on the back foot. We fought in the second world war from 1939 to 1945, when did the spineless yanks turn up? 1942, again after the Germans started to lose. We won the Battle of Britain against Nazi Germany on our own, so don't call us cowards. May I remind you that we have not lost a war since 1066. And the US has not lost a war since 1972. that is the ultimate humiliation.

US joined Dec 1941, turning point of war was Stalingrad 1942-43. Russians were helped by lend-lease. Without US, it is not certain that Britain would avoid occupation. Without Russia and US, Britain could not avoid it for certain.
But it was still a joint UK-USSR-USA victory.

The captives are condemned as cowards because they surrendered when the Iranians came at them.
If they knew they were in Iranian waters like Iran claimed, should they fire back and start a conflict when they knew they were wrong?
What would be the heroic thing to do? What do you think about that?
I think one possibility is that they were following orders to "scout" but not engage in combat. I don't know the facts about it though

Personally I do think that the UK sailors should have handled it differently, but I blame the leadership for that and not the young enlisted personnel (they should have been trained for such a possibility). The officers who were taken however have no excuse for their behavior even in the light of such circumstances.

You are correct, The Royal navy is very well trained, and disciplined, Unlike the US forces that fire 5000 rounds of ammo and hit fuck all. The US only win because of their large numbers of men certainly not because of their fighting skill.
When a UK soldier fires 1 bullet then one of the enemy dies, when an American soldier fires a bullet then one of two outcomes occurs, Either no one gets hit, or he shoots one of his own side.
No doubt the US soldiers are very poor individualy. (Known fact).
