I don't know why I'm so fascinted with this story, probably because the odds against these men returning safely were high--no way could it have been done. But yet they managed to do it. Imagine being stuck down in Antarctica during WW 1--no radio, no communication, etc., and no one knows where you are and you have to get yourselves out of the situation. Simply amazing and inspiring. Reminds me of the stories "Apollo 13," and "127 Hours." Loved the book and the movie with Kenneth Branaugh.
Anyone who reads the books and stories of the Heroic Antarctic Explorers do know exactly who Tom Crean is. He is given enormous credit by Shackleton in his own book about his own expeditions... Every true Antarctic fan does care about Tom Crean and knows him for the legend that he is... All of them amazing men... And Chippy McNeish too, amazing...
well guess what nobody cares about tom crean who was the longest time to stay on antartica he was indestructebel he walked 10 miles to help his friends with no food and barly survived!!!!!
Shackleton is all time...amazing man, amazing crew, and a justly amazing Trivia team named in his (their) honour! The Sir Ernest Shackleton All Stars.
PS...anyone hungry? I have some delicious penguin hoosh warmed up in the stew pot. mm mmm!
I read this guys book, and I tell you, the whole time I was reading it I couldn't shake the feeling that he was completey over exagerating the whole thing. I'm not saying he didnt lose his ship and wasn't stranded, but I mean come on.- throughout the whole book all he talks about is everyone being wet or getting wet or falling in the water. I mean what is he kidding me? Getting wet in those temperatures is akin to falling into a vat of hydrochloric acid, no hope of survival whatsoever.
I think I would rather have been in the trenches of Flanders and Picardy, it makes me wonder why they bothered doing this at such a time in world history. And without the resourcefulness of "Chippy" McNeish ( a Scottish gentleman whom our friend Shackleton reviled) none of them would have made it. McNeish is the hero in my eyes. I'm sure most of them were just hoping the war would be over when they got back.
cold places don't seem as scary as extremely hot. choice between being frozen to death in antarctic or dying due to heat, thirst in the sahara, id choose the antarctic any day.
Thanks a lot for posting.and greetings from Brazil. I am reading Roland Huntford's book - The last place on Earth - and now I am interested in anything about all these wonderful expeditions.
this is the name of this documentary.. I rented it from the Library.. very good indeed , God Was with these Men and thanks for Posting this .. Excellent.. The Endurance - Shackleton's Legendary Expedition (2000)
thank you for posting this.how truly fascinating and how admirable of sir ernest to resue his men he left behind.i am reading south now and it seems as though he made 4 attempts to return for his men on elephant island before succeeding.
Great stuff, and the endurance of the human spirit! My father was in both Poles for the USCG, and for the government and did photos for National Geographic. And said it was frozen beauty, but a hell. Thank you for this.

i thuoght people was stoopid but this take the cake. they stick in the snow so why the FK don they call someone on they cellphone for help? But they so stoopid they stay in the snow. WTF? I be calling up for a helicopter in 2 seconds.
i seen my mom reading the book Endurance a couple times and i thought it looked boring but when i started reading it i couldn't put it down it is now my favorite book and I am always looking for more on Shackleton and his incredible journey thanks a million for posting this
blattman, thanks for answering my question. I did look up both and you're right; this version is not available anywhere; so I went with the other version narrated by Neeson. A friend had recommended it to me recently; it happened to go onsale at Amazon. Meanwhile, I am very much enjoying your posted version. This story is one of my alltime favorites. I've read several books on the subject; own a number of books with great photos; this story never ceases to amaze me. Thanks for posting these!
Is this the Nova documentary? Someone just told me about that one. I found this instead on this site and if it's not the Nova documentary can you tell me which one it is. I would like to buy this one.
I don't know, in the UK this was shown on a commercial channel(4). The Nova documentary from its description on Amazon is 120 minutes long so it doesn't quite match this one, I note it's discontinued as well. There is another one "The Endurance,DVD 2001" which sounds similar but is narrated by Liam Neeson, it is also shorter than the one i,ve posted. This one as far as I know is not available, if it was I wouldn't post it.
Thanks a lot for sharing this with us. I am a great fan of this story, wich I consider to be one of the greatest modern tales. Its a shame so little people know about this man and his adventure. This is the kind of stuff that should be in history books (at least its not here in Canada).
This is a great documentary about one of the most amazing stories, if not the most amazing story of human endurance of modern times. Thank you for posting. My vhs copy taped off tv many years ago is long lost.

They also cheated - they took cocaine to get back on no food rations - on the Forced March tablets..
Also on the way back they ended up having to eat the decomposing ponies left on the ice shelf which they shot to put them out of their suffering - sort of befitting in a way - I hope they puked their guts up.

What a self-centred twat - he and his stupid team were horrendously cruel to the horses they used for the expedition.
Shackleton's 100 year old compass and a hammer suddenly spring to my mind...Not being too unfair here in defence of the way these poor creatures were treated, I HOPE SHACKLETON GOT FROSTBITE IN THE NUTS.
I am the Great Grandson of the second engineer on this expedition, Alexander Kerr. Without the perseverance of Shakleton and his men I wouldn't be here to type this today.
This is very intersting and I enjoyed it, particularly the original footage, fascinating! Do you have any documentaries about Captain Scott? I would be soooo happy to see one, can't find any at all. :)
