@PianoGod1990 -- totally agree..... I saw Joyce Yang (19 year old - at the time - from Korea) play it in the Van Clyburn piano competition and she wipped this beast of a piece into total subservience..
I am currently learning this piece for a national competition in 2 months time. I had it for 3 months and I've only gotten to the third page of it! There are so many 'random' notes you have to memorize. The rhythms are near impossible.
This performance is so bloody good, all I can do is hope I get this piece ready in time...
I got to Stage 2 where I had to play my Concerto (Mendelssohn No.1 g minor) which, also wasn't learnt at the time of the notification. =P
The Carl Vine went well. My Eisteddfods two weeks ago was my best performance of this piece. I was happy to get good remarks from Geoffrey Lancaster. =)
@Yangsta999 Haha, I borrowed this piece from ANU library a couple of weeks ago and it's COVERED in (very helpful) pencil markings which are obviously Geoffrey's.
Exactly right. Michael Harvey interpreted it best, I think. Carl Vine could not have written with such density and ferocity, stunning audiences with forearm clusters marked fff, if he had intended a timid performance. No doubt Spencer Myer was technically sound. But in a savage piece like this, I'd say it's even necessary to hear and see exciting and climatic showers of passion. This way, the sudden tranquility of other parts becomes more sinister than dead.
I like the Third myself. but the Second has it's moments. As does 5. I heard 7th was Premiered this year in WA? Hotly awaiting a recording of that one now...
the new recording of michael kieran harvey playing this sonata is my pick for a favorite recording. this is a really outstanding performance nonetheless. great job!
Much faster. It is pretty fast, but not in a reckless way like Babayan. It is also on a Steinway, so the piano also sounds much better. It is pretty much the perfect recording in my opinion.
LOL, I actually like the Babayan recording of that Sonata! Or as a matter of fact, any of his recordings. He's my idol! Sounds like I should get the new Harvey. Is it on the ABC label?
I also love Ms.Yang, but she follows almost NONE of the markings in this score (tempo, rhythm, etc.). Mr.Myer finds a brilliant balance of honoring the composer's wishes and ALSO bringing a sincere unique interpretation. Bravo!
does this guy have albums?

He plays the climaxes too conservatively and with too much care and measure for my taste, but it is still pretty stirring.

Vine's second symphony is my favourite classical work - I searched youtube on a whim and found this.

Hey, I believe Harvey was the dedicatee of the music. Is his second release any faster than his original recording?

Agreed, I cringe every time I hear the Yang recording. She pays no attention to any details in the score.

Truly a modern piano classic. Especially at the hands of Joyce Yang a la 2005 Van Cliburn Competition 8)
