I saw some videos where the Taliban hide behind trees and bushes and the FLIR doesnt see them. Is it so easy to hide from the Apache? Just cover yourself with vegetation and you're good? Ofc, once the pilot knows that the bad guys are behind the bushes it wont help them, but before the pilot can see them, if they cover themselves with bushes its fairly hard to spot them. Is there a way to counter the veggie-camo?
Forgive my ignorance, but all but one version of the Hellfire is laser guided, correct? Who is doing the designation here, you or the person filming? I noticed that the cameraman moved the crosshair over the target so that it hit, so I assume he was doing it.
@HerrGeneral913 Actually I was in the helicopter that fired the missile. The photographer was our wingman, and his front-seater was just watching us shoot the target. It was laser-guided.
LOL You got color displays ? Awesome . I never thought the US Military could switch from black and white to color displays . Whats the resolution of these displays ? And how much megapixels does the camera got ?
@lewis896 On the topic of the displays again, I know you aren't sure of the exact specifications, but how would you compare the image quality in person to the recordings that are all over the internet? It's my assumption that the imaging is in a much higher definition than those low quality black and white output recordings; is this true?
@bodyboystance2 oh ... why is the output black-white ? Too much data to save on the hard disk or because of the possible gore you could see on the videos ?
@chabi3000 nooonoo gore is not the problem in the army XD if you watch apache guncam videos somewhere apart from youtube you will find a lot of gore... And for those soldiers its the everyday bussiness i think its rather due to filesize
Wow, this is rare footage. I've seen video footage of Apaches before, but I've never known what it's like to look at the screen (through the eyes of the pilot) that shows you the TADS footage.
awesome vid, what a machine! Just out of curiosity, why does apache guncam footage always appear in black and white, or black hot white hot as opposed to the green scale images I see on the MFD's in cockpit photos/videos? is this a function of the recording process? perhaps they are older or newer variants of the targeting pod?
@smokeythelung Well, that Apache TADS (target aquisition and designation system) has both an IR camera and a visible light camera. This is obviously through the visible light camera. Most Apache vids are taken with the B&W IR imagery, and I would guess that that is why you always see B&W Apache images.
Question: My friend thinks the crosshair is yellow, i think he is being silly, but is it really yellow? Because it really seem more like light green to me.
No, it was a real F-model missile (dual warhead). The hulk that we fired on was basically a gutted armored personnel carrier though. Nothing to really "blow up".

@ApacheCobra i will tell you that the image quality is exceptional in person.

@chabi3000 they always look like that
but its the output thats black-white.
Thats why you just know these black and white videos

@grgspunk That's because we're not supposed to take cameras into the cockpit... Clearly this guy's not familiar with the concept of "COMSEC"...

@raulrusboy
Yeah, or the concept of "OPSEC" for that matter...

@lewis896 Night vision imaging modes I think.
HarisonHopwood 8 months ago
@HarisonHopwood
not really ! the screen would be white during nightvision mode xD
LegionCWAM 7 months ago
@LegionCWAM Green/White is generally light amplification whereas Black/White would be Infra-Red.
HarisonHopwood 7 months ago
@HarisonHopwood
what i meant is...the screen would be complete white during day time

Nah, not yellow. Pretty much light, light green.

Okey, thanks.

Is the longbow hellfire missile radar gudied or radio gudied.
N1cholas240 2 years ago
There are 2 variants: laser-guided and radar-guided. This was a laser shot.
lewis896 2 years ago
It IS yellow :p

I love this video. I'm actually building a 1:32 Apache model right now. The Hellfires are about 3" long and have yellow stripes on them. Gorgeous.

And is it true that the FLIR vision is scales of green and not black and white?
ApacheCobra 4 years ago
Yes and yes.

Thanks
ApacheCobra 4 years ago
To clear some things up... All FLIR systems are in scales of green and just the onboard recording makes it in black and white?
ApacheCobra 3 years ago
I recall the Abrams has its FLIR in scales of green just like the Apache..
ApacheCobra 3 years ago
we use black and white in the usmc.
