now in day a city population should look at the metro area. before cars all the housing were inside the cities but after the invention of trains and cars suburbs became more commen. so older cities have more housing within the actual cities(new york chicago phili) while the newer cities have more suburbs (atlanta, los angeles). Atlanta for exp is ranked 33 in city population with 5hundred thousands but the metropolitan area is ranked 9 with over 5 million people.
