I think you are raising a good question. See the book (which is very easy to read) or a longer video to clarify. They also offer a very interesting comparison with a US survey- where the percentage of people who unconditionally condemn attacks on any civilian is very similar.

Christianity had a violent history as well, not just Muslims .... It is called the Crusades and the Inquisitions. Now, look at modern Christianity. Are they going around doing Jihad like these extremists? No. It is the People that make the religion. With more understanding and progress things will change for the better. But not overnight.
