She had welcomed the Pope to Scotland the previous day at her official residence in Edinburgh, the Palace of Holyrood House as it was a state visit not a pastoral one like the 1982 visit to the UK by John Paul II. Music in worship has been a Christian tradition since before Islam was founded. The early Catholic Church would chant the entire mass in Latin. The responses by the congregation were also chanted.

The concept stems from the belief that singing is an act of joy and there is no more joyful worship of God than to sing his praise. This stems from Judeo-Christian tradition where the angels in heaven sing the praise of God.
