  • i paid a years subscription but can't get on the site. I tried contacting this guy but no joy.

  • A really good book about gesture/figure drawing is Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators. It's helped me loads.

  • Wow nice are u able to do 30 seconed gesture pose???

  • great...

  • OMG!

  • My friend "dbznlc" has a drawing contest please enter and give her your username watch her video!! thank you.

  • omg this is amazing, I love the idea of capturing sb in a cafe. Gotta learn that

  • He seems like a pervert.....

  • thumbs up if u see the nekked model at the beginning

  • Like you said, everyone does it differently. There's no way to teach 1 minute poses, or say "that's how it's done." Like, rather than getting an overal shape I try to input as much info as possible to create a certain feel, I don't spend time on strokes and make one line for each 'idea', where you create an idea of a shape that the mind of the onlooker builds off of using lots of time on repeated strokes. Everyone does differently. I like your videos, but I don't understand the point of this one

  • Holy f you are so good!

  • That real cool!

  • i don't mean like... details, i mean your really good at getting the entire proportions and stuff. it's kind of amazing

  • holy shit, your precise o___o

  • wow i'm really learning a lot in these videos. thanks!!!!!

  • Just 1:58 would take me at leaset 10 minutes and he does it 5 seconds.

  • Great tutorial

  • very nice. informative, not too much talking, and very nice drawing. i like u alot i think i might subscribe :) (did)

  • It's a black color pencil from dervent.

  • Really loving these tutorials. Very masterful.

  • this use pencil???

  • He draws with what? I couldnt understand.

  • great tut

  • beautiful work.. added you and subed :) Best wishes and happy week. Venus

  • all i want to do is draw but i cant find my pencil sooo... i'll just watch old spice videos...lol

  • @warhero4545 Lol

  • One thing, Ure awsome

  • I love doing gestures! I like the second one, the first one seemed to use too many lines.

  • I prefer doing 30 second ones... They're so fun! >w<

  • Great demo. Thanks.

  • i like the second gesture , it looks awesome , thanks for the tip

  • what he does in one minute is what i do in a half hour...

  • @Loepedoe11 hes just talking

  • @Loepedoe11 lmao same here :p

  • @Loepedoe11 takes practice, keep trying!

  • you know what?

screw you for making it look so easy! jerk

  • I really love your video. keep it up!

  • I love how he thumbs his nose at you tube and its nude clause, by having a nude statuette in the background. This guy's great.

  • Huh. Well that was nice, now I know what to do if I see someone in a beautiful pose at Starbucks. xD Nice job!

  • You = rad.

  • The second gesture drawing is really nice!

You seem like quite a good artist.

  • lame

  • u did a great job!!! :D

  • what is he drawing with?

  • one minute my ass

  • the girl model is wearing Lolita fashion

  • Thanks ^_^

  • Matt for this one minute drawing who's the modal or is it a painting anyways its a great picture really cool style

  • Is.... Is that LOLI?!

  • a fully formed piece of art is supposed to spring out of your fucking pencil, duh

  • i like 2nd better, both are great though.

  • This is fucking scribbles. Art isnt rushed

  • @Loola144

ugh.. If scribbles didn't exist. How would you practice?

  • @Loola144 I think the idea of doing a quick gesture drawing is to get the shapes, idea, looks, poses and forms down as quickly as possible. you don't have much time to think about it so if you keep doing it these features become second nature and so if you end up drawing something similar you automatically know what to do

  • @Loola144

I love fucking scribbles. A 30 sec to 1 minute drawing have so much more sublime personality than a 4 year painting.

  • @Loola144 people do this to capture the pose, then they can finish it off. actually watch and listen to the video

  • thx, cool stuff!

  • to bad ur so pro at this X] i tried this stuff haha

  • why the heck are all the drawing videos on youtube about drawing bitches? is that all people ever draw?

  • @bizimoton WHY u dont like ? u wanna a naked dude lool

  • very nice!

  • You are so cute!

  • only a true artist can make a one minute gesture drawing become a 7 minute long video

  • @1poptart36 Well he drew two gesture drawings...

  • @1poptart36 You do realize he did 2 one minute gesture drawings and then filled the remaining 5 minutes with education, right? Oh, clearly you don't. The purpose of gesture drawings is not to make very short YouTube videos you dolt.

  • @otakudepot12 lol "dolt" if you couldnt tell, i was making one of those odd statements called a "joke" try doing some research maybe you'll find a sense of humor..apparently 55 other people got it why cant you!?

    grab my pants ADVENTURE! *~*~*~*-*#~~

  • tank you so much teacher, greetings from queretaro mexico.

  • thanks a lot for puting all these videos on line, they are very usefull. just a thought.. ar'nt u over doing the members.. members.. members..thing.. i am quite sure that those who want to subscribe to your offers.. will!! eventually!!! keep up the great work.

  • Would have liked to see you drawing on a smaller paper, so that there's some composition involved as well, otherwise cool video, I'm gonna do some pose tutorials on my channel as well :)

  • youre amazing :o

  • doesn't this type of drawing develop bad habits ? what is the real purpose please ?

  • @AIMANALI The purpose of gesture drawings is really finding form and balance, and being able to illustrate this quickly and accurately. This helps for longer figure drawings or mind drawings where you need to sketch the figure in perfect proportion. It also keeps you looking at the whole frame instead of focusing in on relatively minuscule details. It also encourages drawing with few, effective lines instead a spaghetti-lined mess. It's worth it to do this, but draw from real people often.

  • As an illustration/animation student, line, form, contour and physical structure are key to doing a gesture drawing well (learn the muscles, learn the bones). The spine is the most important part of any gesture drawing and really, this video is not a good example of gestural drawing. Also, be more loose, work with the entire arm not just the wrist. Common shapes are reoccur in figures. If you want a good example, look up Glen Keane.

  • I dont know, u think i could draw a better one in less than 20secs

  • Matt, I have used this fast draw technique with photos of dancers because they have so many poses and it gives the figure drawing a real sense of motion. I have used markers but will try the china marker since you achieve a bit more detail with it. I like your suggestion that we draw big. I need to get larger paper and take the risk of drawing larger-I guess I have been too timid in my sketches.

  • lol, he says mkey xD

  • ima tell am girl to get naked!!!!!!!

  • lolita girl!!! <3

wow, I can't believe how quickly the composition instantly became more crisp as you drew it again.

  • great videos!

  • nice cintiq

  • Lolita style! : )

  • GAHH that blasted hidden "S" at 6:50 X( !! my teacher almost failed our Michelangelo's David project because we hadn't noticed it uaah...

    ...

still great vids! :D no hard feelings lol

  • Yeah :D I found a new video for fail.org ^^

  • I think art is all about mistakes you can either learn from them or it can make you drawing better!

  • "One Minute"

and you show us it 7 min

  • @kris961 He started drawing at 1:52 and stopped at 2:52. So it's one minute.

  • @MsTsulala Tbanks for pointing it out you saved me some minutes :D

  • i learned from mark crilley

  • amazing! but just saying i think you can do nudes. i've seen a lot of nude figure drawings on youtube. and its really a tough subject to draw in art.

  • wasn't really a minute

  • :( wish you had this on dvd :( you didnt show how u did the outline part of complicated dress on dvd

  • If you are serious about drawing as part of career or hobby, I would suggest against starting with markcrilley's stuff. They teach you how to draw in his style but that's all you'll be able to do, and still be unable to actually understand form. If you get good with life drawing first, then you can create or adopt however many styles you want and still have drawings with a strong foundation of reality to them.

  • Matt talks about C curves (and by extension S curves). Some people love them, but they can also be a trap: concentrating on C and S curves has the consequence of flattening both the drawing and your perception of an object. You have to be aware that all lines and shapes on a page are representations of what the subject actually is, which is a 3-dimensional collection of forms with volumes that occupy space.

  • you are really good!!!thank you for show your skill !! i love!!!

  • Thumbs up if after he said "you can't show nudity on youtube" you immediately noticed there's a sculpture of a nakid lady in the background.

  • ???????.... a master?? right

  • @TDuD3 Why don't you try watching his others videos before writing that comment?

  • @missraw m probably but i don't, i just consider that his technique or tutorials doesn't deserve that tittle of "become a master"

  • @TDuD3

I agree with both comments. There is so much to life drawing that is beyond what Matt's videos cover. It takes people years and years to seriously 'master' what we call life drawing. It's an extremely challenging craft. Watching some tutorials online or on DVD and expecting to "master" life drawing is a joke.

  • @WereSalamander n___n xactly

  • To avoid nudity, turn to swimsuits or leotards or something skin-tight for your models.

  • you're doing a gesture drawing over-handed? makes my hand itch just watching...

  • this is great!! my art teacher rambled about these in class once and i was sitting there thinking "you can draw someone in one minute, that's crazy!" but alas the teach was right! i new those timed drawings would come in handy! =)

  • thank you! very informative

  • Use live models everyone. Especially for gesture drawing.

  • Very Talented!

  • less words and more action

  • nice AT2020 mic

  • I see some tits in the back!

  • Your really good. :D i mostly draw anime stuff but have been trying to transition into a more traditional style. :3 and your a huge help.

  • i couldn't get the name of the pencil, how is it written again?

    =(

  • This guy is FAST at gesture drawing!

  • LOLITA!

  • Those are some great gestures. Especially the second one...

  • I have seen other nude figures on Youtube. I am sure you are able to post a nude drawing. Anyway great job!

  • you are awesome.....

  • Will drawing from life help you draw from memory?

  • thats not true.. you can do nudes..

  • wow. the second one is amazing. Wish i could learn this stuff but I dont have money to blow on a subscription. Keep the free stuff up Matt, cheers.

  • stop at 0:45 !! so funny!!

  • I want to see how well you can do it tn ten seconds.

  • You can do nudes as long as they're artwork, no real images. Also males must not be hard... :)

  • i have the same microphone! and the same creion! anyway nice work. been learning a lot from your videos.

  • thanks for posting this my friend

  • Cool and thank you for including the materials used it is so often we pick one pencil or pencil set and one paper and thats it. We should all explore new mediums papers. I love drawing cheap easy can be done just about anywhere.

  • markcrilley is by far the BEST and most original who actually shows from start to finish in his "How To's"...

You're just another RivenPhoenix in it for the money; Downloaded both you guys stuff -tutorialz- let me tell u, Thank GOD for Youtube members who are skilled if not more than you both; Though in the comic or whatever media buying or requiring freelance illustrators may not be so...Rich! But damnit they still can kick ur poser butts anyday of the week!

  • @Sileni

The stuff Matt explains are way more complicated than mark crilley's little manga boys...

  • @Mik3River4 Your missing the point, even IF what Matt discusses happen to be more complicated still doesn't validate the fact, that this deuche-bag doesn't post a vid of him drawing from start to finish! --That draw under a minute fiasco, is utter bullshit!

With Mark Crilley's you get a sense of personal interaction, reason why his stuff sells and happen to be voted in the top-100's as best Youtubers. Get real...Matt is outclassed compared to Mark --Hands down!

  • @Sileni your dumb, hes not "as famous" as Mark because he doesn't do anime (which is for asians and stupid people (maybe like you?) plus he is doing this because he wants too (and hes trying to get people to go to his website) so don't complain. and you don't have to watch

  • @Tea42formenyou

lol. idk i think thats funny.

  • @Tea42formenyou I think Sileni's point was not that Mark is "more famous" than Matt, which I don't know if it's true or not, probably, but that doesn't matter. It's the fact that Mark draws from start to finish so you can see exactly what he's doing and how to do it like he does. If you look at Matt's "How To Draw Hair" video you can see that the hair was already done, it was mostly just talking and adding small details along the way. Do you not like Asians? XD

  • @Sileni

You open up any cheap ass how to draw manga book, and you'll find everything Mark talks about in there. Matt is giving fantastic tips, you don't have to have a start to finish drawing to get what he's saying, and if you do, you have no hope for being an artist.

Everything Matt has said, despite not posting a full video to kiss your ass, is still valuable information, and if you can't see that, well that's just sad.

  • And to be frank you don't need tutorials to even learn to draw, you're hating Matt because you won't get your lazy ass off the computer and draw.

  • Ya I really like the second one an also I beleave that gesture drawings can be used on material objects to then broken down to more detail like a air plane

  • Not bad. might want to try something cleaner next time. Pay a bit more attention to flowthrough lines.

  • I like the second one more, but that's just me

  • what kind of tablet is that?

  • Looks like a Cintiq, yo!

  • should have put nudes on youtube. there's vids of people giving birth on youtube, nude drawings are nothing compared to that

  • Why didn't you put the photograph under the paper ? It worked pretty well on your other tutorials.

Thank you again for making us Drawing Masters.

People : get a pencil and practice, regularly and for years. There is no teacher for telling you how to draw anything/anyhow, in 5 minutes.

  • @pierrickz not trying to bash on you or offend you but it kinda ruins the purpose of the gesture drawing. Just my 2cent thought though.

  • @Kaidenki, Yeah i agree with you

  • wow, Thats really good<3

    haha,... just for one minute!!!!!

  • nice!

  • really nice teaching. its really important to get the rythms right when drawing minute poses, u really got that

  • what type of pencil did u use? i would like to draw just like u do

im ur big fan hehe ^_^

ill be waiting for ur answer

thanx and please PLEASE keep posting more vids

    i love them

  • Not sure if I'm right, but i think he's using a 2b or hb charcoal pencil

  • thanx, i will have to buy some of those

  • Gestures are about movement form and weight. Don;t do gestures from drawings. Draw from life.

Gestures aren't supposed to be cute!

    Look up Kimon Nicolaides.

  • @raccoonnyc how are you going to tell somebody what they can or can't draw?

  • @raccoonnyc

No offense but I really don't think there's anything wrong with doing gestures based on other drawings, especially the work of the old masters. A gesture should look the same regardless of whether you're looking at a model, another drawing, or just working from imagination because it's simply a gesture. The point is to get the total and establish the flow of the figure.

  • @Olecranon89 I advise to avoid drawing off other people's art when practicing, as any imperfections in their drawing become multiplied in your own. Drawing from life is the best option, and when that is not available, use photographs. I would only advise using other artist's art as a reference when learning a style specific to that artist. (Ex: Learning how to draw anime form and so on)

  • @deadithink Finally someone say that! People always suggested me to copy from other artists rather than prom photos and life, but i never listened them, i always said 'other artist may do mistakes even if very good, reality is never wrong!' and they answered: 'if they make mistakes, you must correct their mistakes!'

The problem is that i don't know how correct a mistake of an artist that is better than me.

  • @AliceSacco You don't copy from life, you interpret life. That makes a true artist.

  • @AliceSacco I think the clue to copying artists, and I'm mainly coming from a musicians perspective here, but it applies to all things, is that you copy as many artists as you possibly can. A parallel to this would be "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." By knowing a lot of history, or artists, in this case, you can draw conclusions as to which are right, or rather which are right for your particular style. That said, your view has equal merit.

  • @AliceSacco You do not copy from the artists, you learn from their pros and learn from their cons. As a magician, I will watch countless magicians and their different styles, use them as my base to further pursue and create my own style but there are always people who create the foundations of the art. You do not copy from them, you learn from them :D

  • @raccoonnyc some don't have the facilities (deployed mil) but otherwise I agree

  • Gesture drawings can be intimidating. Very good work~

  • Bad because you don't understand what gesture drawing???

  • Can't do any nudes on Youtube? Zounds.

  • wow. this is good. thanks.

  • Love to see what your 3 min gesture drawing look like. Could you share it with us?

  • Not everyone wants to learn digital, but I agree, gestures take up a lot of space, that's why I use big newsprint pads, 24x36, can hold about 30-40 gestures per page, both front and back.

  • That's what I do! =D

  • Using a tablet to practice drawing can be bad for you! Using a tablet to edit and advance a drawing through color and line art is fine and by other means is fine, but to practice drawing on one is a totally different realm than drawing on actual paper. If anything, you would just be making it harder for yourself when you go back to the traditional medium!

  • i try to do it in same time >>> my pencil brocked hhh lol

  • i do life drawing and find your exercise fantastic. some people's comments indicate that the word gesture doesn't ring a bell. k

  • the second gesture was much better,

I would love to see more! Please chose a better picture though, maybe someone in a bathing suit since you can't do nudes...

it will help caputre the movement of the human body....

please do more of these :)

  • Because the more you do something, the better you get at it... he just did it, so his second gesture should have been something else, cause really the second gesture was really like a 2 minute pose...
