this is Lou with the TOTS, a group of high school kids who've never gotten the recognition they deserved--they sounded great. the fact that I know one of them personally has nothing to do with my opinion!

This is definitely NOT the band featuring Hunter/Wagner on guitars, Prakash John, Ray Colcord & Pentti Glan. They went on the road after the recording of 'Berlin' in late summer 1973 until the end of that year, .culminating with the 'Rock 'n' Roll Animal concert in December 1973. This band sounds more like 'The Tots', indeed, Lou is even playing guitar here, himself. Also, Lou dropped the 'Heavenly wine & roses' ending to this song by the time he toured with the Hunter/Wagner band.

Just heard the R+R Animal "Sweet Jane" on the radio.... I don't remember ever hearing the studio version on the radio.....lol.... could it be the great guitar interplay ? pretty funny

This is one of the things that annoys me most of beeing born in 1970 and not having been so lucky to see one of his early concerts. I mean, I´ve seen him and John Cale and Moe Tucker quite a few times in the 90s but, you all know that´s a different story...

Blimey, I was at this. Alongside my good friend Pete, God rest his soul. I think we were just amazed to see Reed in the flesh, as if we couldn't quite believe that he actually existed. Though as I recall, he seemed very tiny in his black suit. Perhaps it was just a big stage. Thanks for posting this.

I thought the drumming was the interesting thing about this performance. One of the best versions I have heard. BTW I have re-done the slides with a much better scanner, so watch out for a director's cut LOL...

I don't much like the drumming around 1:30, it's good and even made me go "damn that was dirty," but it took away from the song.

Great upload, thanks! Fantastic photos. It's a shame how little footage there's around of Lou Reed live from the early '70s, when he was - visually - at his most spectacular. This doesn't have the proto-glam-metal sound of Rock&Roll Animal. Thanks for posting this

@kidcalabria I met Lou Reed many years ago and I told how I thought "Rock n Roll Animal" was one of the greatest rock guitar albums...ever , cause it is....Wagner and Hunter killer... he looked at me and told me how the album sucked... Turns out he mightn't have cared for their arrangements of his tunes... lol.... and he had a very very weak handshake, my grandma had a manlier shake. I still my guitar along to that record.

@TheSpoonwood To my ears it is truly one of the greats.. just for the record I remember reading one of his comments some years ago to the effect that it was him who told them what and how to play !! wooops .. stirring it now LOL
