@Amtrak1194 Former Soviet Union railways use Soviet-type S4 couplers; the rest of Europe uses buffer-and-screw couplers. They need to change them so locomotives on both sides can haul the carriages, and if the train must be separated (bad-order carriage, for example) the couplers will match those used locally.
Russia and China use knuckle couplers.

@RussianRailroad хах, а как же ещё? Не будут же в Польше, Гермении (и т.д.) специально для РЖДшного поезда содержать локомотивы с СА-3 :)
