Disqualify Hagler my ass. Antuofermo was the one who kept coming in headfirst. Hagler was content to stay outside and box most of the time. Antuofermo's corner has no one to blame but themselves.
To my eye, Marvin was one of the most complete boxers in history and one of the greatest moreover. He could brawl, could box, had a jaw made of titanium, and man o' man, what a jab!
Honestly, I haven't watched many of Hop's fights, a travesty I know haha. From what I have seen, I think he could give Marv some trouble though, he's got a pretty solid right cross, which can be the bane of a southpaw (though Marvin could switchhit). He also has a definite height advantage which could play out well for him (5'9 vs 6'1). That being said, being that I'm a Hagler fan, I'd have to give the guess that he'd win by a tight UD, 116-112, something like that.
Jones would never beat Hagler at the 160 weight limit. Hagler could box, slug, moved well, counter-punch well, had a good defense, was tough as nails, and had an iron jaw. He was never knocked off his feet! A lefty with a good right hand is always tough to beat! Hagler beat some tough guys and made it look easy! Hagler didn't only beat guys, and knock them out, he had a way of busting them up and ruining them!
great observation ! After the giants of the 80's retired boxing has slowly lost a lot... i dont follow it anymore.... would rather watch old matches on youtube.
Thanks! Me too!!! Too many sanctioning bodies with too many champs nowadays! The sanctioning bodies don't want to risk their stock (champ) against another sanctioning bodies, for fear of losing their organizations credibility. That's why none of these guys stand out, like a Marvin Hagler! Remember how back in the 70's and 80's, you could name the champ in every wt. class? Now I don't know any of these so-called (multiple)champs. It's taking away the interest and ruining boxing!
Did you see Jones in his prime? Never before or since has there been someone that fast that big... he could pick at u all day with that speed which made guys want to come forward to close the gap and trap him... that would play into his counter speed... but who knows. Jones on points
Hagler was incredible! He could box,he could punch,he could counter, he could fight inside and out! He had an iron jaw and a great defense! He was actually only 5'7" & a natural middleweight. Jones was a lt.heavy. He might've started at middle, but he was 5'11" & was always destined to be a lt. Hvy.Were basically trying to speculate on who would've won between Hagler & a great lt. HVY. But if we're talking 160, check Jones' competiton when he WAS@160.The only opponent of notoriety was Hopkins.
@Ashtree1976 I stood right next to him at ringside, in the Boston Garden, after he stopped Kevin Finnegan. I literally patted him on top of his head while congratulating him. I am 5'10" and I had a good 2 to 3 inches of height over him. That's why I say he was 5'7" or maybe 5'8" tops. Where do you get your info?
But even Hopkins- at that time- had faced opponents w/mostly losing records himself. So there's no real way to gauge it. Based on what we have w/regard to Jones' experience @ 160, I would agree that he was fast, but I think Hagler would've just been too much for him! He would've stayed inside on him and would've taken him apart (@160)!
ok ok... anywho this is fun, talking about who could or would .... heres something ill send u a message cause I dont want to start drama here on this page....
Finally, Jones, like almost every other rt. handed fighter in the world, had difficulty w/lefties(Tarver for example). Hagler was probably among the best left-handed fighters of all-time! He was a lefty with a good right hand, and they are always tough to beat anyway. Add to it that Hagler was probably one of the most complete fighters in the game, as stated earlier. He did everything well and never was knocked off his feet, and never even appeared to be hurt.
@Robstailey Why do you say that? Because the commentators were both yelling it out frantically after Hearns connected on Hagler w/a couple of shots in the 1st round? He got moved by a couple of good shots, but his knees didn't buckle, or give out, and he didn't go down. And he was pounding Hearns several seconds later, so how much trouble could he have been in? He later said he wasn't hurt. I'll believe Hagler over Bernstein and the other commentator
@lggriffin Yep, hearns was hurt, Hagler couldn't be hurt, ask John Mugabi who landed a few of his best Sunday punches but could not hurt Hagler, or ask Juan Roldan who Mills Lane gave a fake knockdown to in their fight and then Hagler got up and whipped his azz. Hagler had one of the greatest chins ever and he was 5 ft 9 by the way.
Sugar ray was a pussy. He has stated he knew he could never hurt Hagler; but he thought he could out-point him. If that fight had taken place in alley or a octagon Hagler would have killed him.
A pussy? going toe to toe with Duran in brawl in Montreal for 15rds. also coming from behind with closed eye against Hearns to win in 14th rd, that aint a pussy is it, internet warrior, how many world titles you won or Olympic gold medals, lol. I ain"t a big Leonard fan, but You are talking shit!!!
I agree with you Dan... Leonard did all the things you mentioned............ all very very pro accomplishments...... aint it strange how people love to tear down the heroes they build.

Vito got beat up in 2 fights versus Hagler!! Needed over 50 stitches the first fight to sow his face back together! Watch the fight it was'nt even close!! Vito was a weekend champion in my opinion!! He was beaten thoroughly by Hagler both fights!!
HAGLER...Greatest Middleweight ever! And a lefty who could fight better than any right hander out there in that era, from the right hand stance!! period!! none better!!
Vito was an accident... not a good, nor great boxer...he was mediocre at best....... Hagler, Robinson and Monson were the best in this division .... they were not great .... they were fantastic!!!
Fuckin bastards, I can't even believe Hagler was a contender, let alone a Champion. Look at these fuckers and before and after.....It's a good fuckin thing Hagler was GREAT, because otherwise he woulda been kilt.
Listen, I'm a whitey....I'm white, Hagler is alltime MF, so just quiet yerself now.
Actually, I just came up with that last comment...I'm tired.
I saw Vito atleast deserving a draw, he counterpunced Hagler consistently in the second half of the fight. Also Vito was champ, and Hagler never admits he loses, just look at the SRL fight.
Guess what?? You have an afro Amr president (elect). Hagler fought the toughfest sons o bitches out there his whole life, and he got robbed a few times....lets have PEACE.
OH...BTW, I'm white...and canad.....So there!!
All the racial shit needs to go to sleep, forever!!
In the first fight, Vito won because while he was the Champion some of the key rounds HE BROUGHT TO THE CHALLENGER. Hagler did not TAKE the Championship from the Champion. Vito fought tough and as Champion he was rewarded with the draw.
Great fight,Hagler is certainly great, but not that night!
Right. In a close championship fight, a challenger needs to take it to the champ if he wants to win. Louis vs Walcott I is an example. Close fight, but Joe was the aggressor. It is also why I think Hagler should not have lost to Leonard. That should have been a draw.
If they ever let a fighter into the boxing hall of fame for winning ugly Vito would be first in line. He did'nt do anything particularly well, was all head n shoulders, n had no real pop yet, he won the majority of his fights. I got to see him fight against the late Willie Classen b4 he won the title in a fight I thought he lost. A riot broke out after the decision. Anyway you put it he was one tough SOB. By the time this fight took place he was'nt the same fighter anymore!
antuofermo lost his heart for boxing after the horrible judging in his loss to alan minter.he was never the same after that debacle of judge scoring.vito was fully commited to acting in italian action films by the time this rematch took place.totally TOTALLY not the same as he had once been people!!

It just amazes me to read some of the ignorant and stupid remarks people can make here. Antuofermo was not great, but he was a very tough fighter. His bleeding was the result of sharp facial bones which would cut through his skin when he was hit. He had to have them surgically filed down later.
Regardless of the sharpness of his bones, that does not take away the fact he was a notorious bleeder. That was the point I was trying to make.Hagler had a point to prove in this fight, due to the fact he got screwed in the first Antuofermo fight two years prior.
